Making a Seagal film PG-13 was unforgivable. Helicopter explosion is straight from Charlie’s Angels. Pretty much all the inmates were non-English speakers so they just randomly stand around in silence. Some opening exteriors of Alcatraz were actual B-roll from The Rock. Nia Peeples was awesome.
@RedEyeReviews3 жыл бұрын
It was watchable....but barely. Also yeah apparently this director is friends with Michael Bay and because the budget was so crappy, he was allowed to use his B Roll of the island. which is a nice gesture considering he sort of rips off the same plot

The dude has such an odd career path, while he always had quirks, initially his acting quirks were not much worse than those showing up in other 90s era action films and had better than normal early hit rate. Though has one of the longest and most consistent slides in quality in history, but some of that might just having set up his own production so still shoehorning himself into lead roles when not even willing to match the effort of bit part actors, where a normal actor would have retired or learned something failing to get roles.

I'm a big martial arts fan and I thought he was legit most of my life. He's the first American to run an Aikido dojo in Japan, which is a big boast. So he must have been when he was young, before his movie career, and his weird persona.

Ah, yes. The poor man's version of The Rock. Joking aside, this is a fun movie to riff at. Especially when I saw it pretty late on the Reelz channel (which often airs other Seagal movies as reruns), and it's so ridiculous that it felt like "The Room" of action movies. It tries so hard to be a gritty action thriller, but is so ridiculous that it's comical.

@@RedEyeReviews I would love to see a review of the 1986 Arnie film Commando, if you haven't already done one and I've missed it. In the mid-eighties there was this weird competition between the action heroes to see who could get the highest body count (in those days that meant people you'd killed, not fcuked). I can't verify this, but I seem to remember that Rambo went into the 200s and Commando went into the 300s. When the late acclaimed English film reviewer Barry Norman (himself a former soldier) reviewed Commando, he said something along the lines of, "Fortunately the enemy soldiers' rifles are armed with bullets designed to miss large, slow-moving Americans." Arnie's daughter (incidentally he has the macho film character name of John Matrix) is called Jenny, which throughout the name he pronounces as 'Chenny'. But the best thing is, the worst campest villain, who wears a 1970s gay moustache and chainmail vest throughout (just to confirm, I am absolutely not homophobic, but going into battle with this guy would be like fighting someone from the Village People who was sacked for being too camp). Superb film. A mystifying sandwich. Steel drum music. Token black bimbo actress. It's the film that just keeps on giving. Please review; lots of potential fun. : )

Quick FYI: the helicopters used at the end look like UH-1’s or some early variant of the Huey family, their service ceiling (max altitude) is around 12,500 feet. That’s a realistic altitude to skydive from. The only thing is, that’s the absolute max altitude the heli can go, meaning it would take a long time to get up there (as the higher you go, the slower you go, like driving your car up a steeper and steeper hill) and the heli could only get up there if it’s payload (fuel/passengers/cargo) was minimal. So realistic, technically. Could they actually achieve that altitude? Probably not. (We won’t even get into hypoxia at high altitudes and other external factors)
@RedEyeReviews2 жыл бұрын

1:06 Aren't Buddhists supposed to be, like, unselfish or whatever? 2:48 aka "gunzerking." They're probably not even using Two Gun Berserker class mods! Haha! Noobs! 3:32 Kinda like Soylent Green. 4:17 That guy has the stock properly extract on his MP5A3! That's rare! Most actors leave the stock collapsed to its storage position for no reason. 4:40 Why does he have the ammo belt draped over his shoulder?! 5:23 Unfold that stock, greenhorn! See what I mean?! They can never be consistent except when they're doing things consistently wrong. Which begs the question - is more insulting to the audience to consistently do things wrong or to sometimes do things right but inconsistently? 5:24 Of course, it's only appropriate that their "Heavy Weapons Guy" would have a belt-fed machine gun, but with the belt draped over his shoulder like that (especially his "strong side" shoulder which draws back the belt more), he's pretty much guaranteeing that his weapon will jam. A belt-fed gun should have a belt box. 5:30 Not only does he have the stock folded, but he's firing one-handed while using his support hand all wrong. He'd be a lot more efficient with that Micro Uzi if he unfolded the stock, fired from the shoulder in short controlled bursts, and aimed with the sights. [[researches IMFDB ]] Okay, there might be a reason for not using the stock. Between scenes, the gun changes from a real-deal Micro Uzi with a folding stock to a half-assed civilian version with no stock. That's still dumb, though, and insults the audience's intelligence. There's also a guy who uses a Mini Uzi and he also leaves the stock folded and fires one-handed while holding his arm with his support hand. Who was the technical consultant on this movie?! Did they even bother to hire one?! Maybe they weren't getting paid enough. 5:39 A G36 is way too classy for this type of movie. Also way too classy for these cheeki breeki bandit-type goons. This is around the time the G36 started becoming a movie star. 7:01 Half Russian, half Irish. 8:18 Why does that rear-loaded launcher have a rocket loaded down the front? It's based on the M72 LAW which is a Vietnam War-era 66mm collapsible disposable single-use rocket tube. There's a reason they don't make 'em like that anymore. Meanwhile, the RPG-7 was designed in the early 1960s and its still going strong because it's a savvy design. Front-loaded with a 40mm tube so it's not monstrously heavy, plus it allows rockets to have a variety of warheads of various sizes and specialized purposes. Rear-loaded launchers (which is what most NATO ones tend to be) have a different set of strengths and weaknesses, but generally tend to be less versatile because of the ratio in szie between the rocket tube's bore and the diameter of the warhead. Meanwhile, the West's breach-loaded grenade launchers tend to be more versatile than the East's muzzle-loaded ones, so it evens out. Keep it cheeki breeki.
