Yeah that's one interpretation. Another, is that there are a lot of women who knowingly share the same man 'cos they both figure he's worth it. Usually in these cases, it's the man who can't pick between the women. So that's another way to see the song.

She was the wife in this story, and wrote this as the other woman as a coping mechanism to both justify, and condemn the emotions she was feeling...Hate, love, fear, rage, pain, sorrow, and finally, acceptance of the fact that the man she married was a complete douche bag, and would be better off without him...incredibly brave, and probably the most brutally honest breakup song I've ever heard...Simply beautiful! 💔

A few things about this song: This song is in response to Reba McCntire song "Who's ever in New England". This song is from the side chick point of view. Jennifer Nettles, the singer here, actually found out her husband at that time, was cheating on her. Every time she had to do the video it was extremely hard on her. The guitarist was telling her they could do it another time. Finally, she gathered up her courage and performed. Those emotions that she shows in this video are very very real.
@Cat4254 жыл бұрын
Sugarland’s “Stay” is the first of the duo’s chart-topping songs to solely be written by singer Jennifer Nettles. Although she has never lived the storyline of the song, she knew the subject of betrayal is something everyone could relate to, yet she wanted to tell the story from a different viewpoint. The song was written four years ago and inspired by Reba McEntire’s “Whoever’s in New England,” which was written from the perspective of a wife whose husband is cheating on her. Nettles knew countless songs written from that viewpoint but none from the other two people involved. She says most people don’t realize that even the person who is doing the cheating gets hurt as well. “Even though the person who is cheating might think he or she is getting away with something, they know they aren’t living their highest truth,” she says. “And they wouldn’t be in the situation if they were just happy-go-lucky in the first place. Nobody is happy in this situation.” Once she decided to write the song from the other woman’s perspective, Nettles was overwhelmed with emotions and says the song pretty much wrote itself. “You know, it was just in a couple of sittings on my couch,” she explains. “And once the first line came, ’I’ve been sitting here staring at the clock on the wall. I’ve been laying here, praying she won’t call,’ the story just unfolded.” Kristian Bush, the other half of Sugarland, remembers being blown away by the lyrics the first time he heard the song. “This is one of those first times when you become like Bob Dylan, where you are writing the character’s story rather than your story,” he notes. “And it’s a huge moment, and I am humbled around people who write like this. When I heard that song, I was like, ’Oh, my gosh. This is a heavy hitter of a writer here. This is a monster of a machine that is about to write songs.'” “Stay” was one of the first songs Nettles and Bush wanted recorded for Enjoy the Ride because they knew the song would resonate with fans. While headlining the recent CMT on Tour, the duo encountered several fans who gave them the strength to speak out in their own relationships. Nettles said she knows how hard it is to say something you know is for your own good but at the same time doesn’t feel good while you’re saying it. And in that moment of standing up for what is right for yourself, she says, you’ll be amazed at how powerful and liberated you feel. Bush says they often got odd looks from audience members wondering whether the song had anything to do with his and Nettles’ relationship. Bush is married and says his relationship with Nettles is a brother-sister relationship. His “big brother” instincts came out when they taped the video for “Stay,” as Nettles became overwhelmingly emotional. Bush recalls, “Immediately, I was just like, ’Everybody stop. Stop this! Y’all leave the room. Y’all made her cry.’ I was like a knuckle-draggin’ dad or a husband or something. I was really freaked out.” He went to console Nettles, who had stepped out of the room, and offered to send everyone home, saying they could continue taping the following day. But Nettles assured him she was fine and continued to cry during the next three takes, making it hard for Bush to watch. “About that time, I’m spent,” he said. “It’s not even noon and I’m emotionally drained. They had to tie me down to watch all of this happen. It was like watching someone torture your friend.”

I am studying teacher training with Music and English as my classes (I hope I wrote that right ...) And for studying Music I had to pass an entry exam. There I also had to sing and I chose this song. One of my teachers cried ... and two days later they told me I passed and that they especially liked that song so much. I really am happy to have my own connection to the song (although the song also hits home lyrically ...) I just wanted to say thank you for reacting to such an emotional song! If you want to hear more emotional stuff ... listen to "Cam" ... especially her songs "burning house" and "Til there's nothing left" are totally beautiful (but then ... everything she wrote is stunning). She is the side chick, and she chooses redemption, to move on, without him. It’s a song about redemption and acceptance for something that will never happen.

As a Country Music Lover #1 and Lover of all other kinds of Music #2 I have always keep up with big hits in Country and when this Came out I cried and listened to it over and over again. Love this Song if this truly is your first time coming across her, listen to her other top hits, they are just as brilliant Jennifer Nettles has the Voice of a Goddess

I am so happy that you chose to listen to this country music by Sugarland. Although they are not a group anymore, Jennifer Nettles' voice is so good. She is a solo artist now.. Also did you know that her music partner, the guiter player is related to the Bush Bean family. Just a little trivia.

She is the side chick. She fell in love with the guy even though he's with someone else. Whether she knew from the start or not. She lives him. But she deserves someone all to herself so she's telling the guy not to bother her anymore. She's breaking up with him.

She’s married to him and the other girl is the side chick. That’s why she says “we don’t have to live this way” and how SHE has to share him.
@caitlinholm65744 жыл бұрын
That is incorrect. This definitely from the point of view of the other women . He keeps promising to leave his wife but doesn't. "Praying she won't call" meaning the wife calling her husband to see when he will be home or check on him.

I used to get requests to sing this song all the time on karaoke nights. If people knew why I picked it the FIRST time I sang it (and was okay with it every time thereafter) they would know I was actually pretty broken. The lyrics hit me like a train the first time I heard it, cause my husband was a cheater. I tried (for the sake of our vows) to make things work with him, actually had long conversations (and even some heated arguments) with the women he'd messed with. He'd find different ways to try and hide their numbers from me. Became pretty creative with it actually, even making fake "license plate numbers" so he could "park a work truck at the hotel" (he worked on oil rigs). Was one of those who wanted the cake and to eat it too. And yes...I finally left him. Told him to just go be with whoever he wanted but to be sure that, next time, he actually loved the woman enough to leave others alone before he took any vows. I sang this song with absolute intent to get over him. Those lyrics helped heal my brokenness.
