I think the "every down" standard for Kickers and Punters is unlike other special Team guys. Kickers and Punters aren't competing for every down positions, their role is there and you can't just sub in any other player for an elite kicker or punter. Seems silly to hold them to a standard like that.

Hines Ward is the all time catches, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns leader for a franchise that has had a TON of really good wide receivers. I don't think that's the winning argument for the same reason Steven Jackson is the Rams all-time leading rusher over Bettis, Faulk, Dickerson, etc. Ward will get in based on stats, post-season success, and as undeniably the best blocking WR ever. The NFL points scoring leader is a kicker… I think they should be based more on performance than raw accolades (especially in the clutch with the opportunities given, which they don’t control) like rings although clutchness in regards to postseason performance should be heavily weighted, with that understanding that again they don’t control any of the situations they are put into. They are absolutely worthy to be considered in the HOF - just ask Vikings or Patriots fans for how awful/great their kicking games have been in the past decade…

I feel like kickers and punters should be in the hall of fame jus tbecause their jobs significantly impact games and require a special skillset that they have to master and could not adequately be replicated by another random practice squad guy in today's game. If you ask me, he’s on the same tier as the other coach in here that he evaluated and also said doesn’t belong (Siefert). Both won Super Bowls with a lot of talent from the coach before them. Coincidentally enough, both were also defensive coordinators beforehand (Siefert on the Niners of 1983-1988, and Tomlin on the 2006 Vikings and was a defensive back coach for the Bucs in the early 2000’s). And if you ask me, both coaches should be considered “Hall of Very Good” along with the other borderline coaches who are debated at times but not ultimately in. They had successful careers as coaches in the league (both guys have multiple deeper playoff runs and a win percentage of well over .600 for over 150 games coached each in addition to their time as lower coaches on championship teams before), but were handed a lot of talent from the previous coach for their only championships as a head coach, and have resumes that some would call more impressive or even would argue they belong in with, if they didn’t have as much talent handed to them.

The take about relievers not being good enough to be starters is pretty outdated. That was true in the '90s, but now teams absolutely draft and develop guys solely to be relievers. They have arsenals that are just better deployed going all out for one inning at a time. Guys like Craig Kimbrel, Kenley Jansen, Emmanuel Clase, and Edwin Diaz were groomed for late inning relief roles from pretty much the time they entered Major League systems.

I feel like even if you dont play every down in football or every inning in baseball, if you do something that others cant do, i think you should be in the respective hall of fame. With special teams players like Devin Hester or Steve Tasker, opposing coaches had to game plan around specifically them, on special teams. Especially for tasker, he should have definitely played on offense more, literally jim kelly advocated to move him up to offense, but marv leavy wanted to keep him on sp because he saw the value of it. Tasker played a huge role in the success of those bills teams with their early 90s dynasty over the AFC, there was no way they get all of those quick defensive stops without him.

That Tucker take is an absolute L. I understand that kickers aren't always playing, all the do is really kick, but you have to think about how many games are decided by a field goal, or the extra points from kicker. PLUS, he also has a NFL record for the longest kick EVER. He is one of the most consistent kickers of all time, and remains as one of the only kickers that you could see line up from 55+ and expect to make it. The things Tucker and other kickers have done for the game its crazy not to say they’re hall of famers. Not every kicker deserves that moniker but some most definitely do. Kickers have the game in there hands all the time and most 4th quarter comebacks end in the QB trying to get the KICKER in field goal range. If you take your QB out to give the KICKER a chance to seal the game that’s a pretty solid indication that they’re worth a lot more than he’s implying. Kickers are Hall of Famers, especially Tucker. Kevin Kolb's jersey is in the HOF that he wore during that game where he threw 7 TD passes, even though Kolb himself will never make it in. I think stuff like that would be fine for people who made memorable plays.

Ive got a question about Tyreek Hill. On pace to finish with 10k yards and probably close to 80 TD's in only 8 years. I believe he plans to retire after 2025. Do you think he has it in him to pass someone like Randy Moss in rec yards? Randy sits at about 15k yards over a 14 year career, but has many more TD's than Tyreek (156 to ~80). And with Tyreek still on pace to break a 2k yard season, could an argument be made that Tyreek Hill could be better than Moss (at least over the duration of Tyreeks career)?

I think players in football HOD consideration need to be judged per the position they played. A good kicker can’t be expected to be an every down player yes, but a kicker is still a member of the team, and an extraordinary kicker should be treated as if we see an extraordinary WR or lineman. They are excellent within role and even exceed that expectation. Same with fullbacks or even punters though those guys would have to do a lot to get HOF consideration.

As a ravens I’m curious on what you think off Terrell Suggs as a HOF, he’s got a DPOY, multiple 10+ sack seasons, all time leader in TFLs, DROY, and a SB champion. I personally think he’s very underrated as far as defensive ends go so I’m curious on your thoughts.

@ColinGLogan
@ColinGLogan 10 ай бұрын
My take on the "some positions shouldn't be hall of famers" debate is that what matters is whether or not you're really the best at your role. With the exception of Mariano Rivera, who accumulated enough value as a closer to match a HoF starter, the players who are really the best at closing games are just the best starters. It's the same story for punt returners and many other special teamers, but *not* punters and kickers. (Like with Rivera, a punt returner would still be a valid HoF candidate, but their value would have to be comparable to HoF receivers and no player like that has ever existed)
