Amir was 24 when they started making Jake & Amir. I'm pretty sure the character was just rattling off a weird stream-of-consciousness statement that sounded poignant but quickly turned out to be insane babble.

Why argue on the internet when you can look it up yourself before posting an ignorant comment. Eskimo is a broad term for indigenous people living in parts of the circumpolar region or north-pole area. Inuits and Yupiks are the two main groups referred to as eskimos. It's not offensive. It's not based on skin color. It's not derogatory.

Depends on your perspective. From a biological stand point no, but there's a different definition of race that's for humankind only, each major division of humankind having distinct physical characteristics, which would be white, black, or asian.

1. Understandable. 2. So do you consider it racist if someone calls a Native American an Indian or do you consider it insensitive, inaccurate, and obsolete? That's how I see the Inuit situation as well. Now if someone is knowingly using it in a derogatory way along with other language that would suggest so, then yes it can be racist. But someone just misusing the term in everyday language necessarily isn't racist.

From a biological stand point you're right, but there comes a different definition with race, "Each of the major divisions of humankind, having distinct physical characteristics", which would be white, black, asian. As for saying people who use the term race is racist isn't right either.

Ahhh we got a Wiki-expert here!! I don't need to check anything cuz I've worked with both Inuit and Roma human rights activists and their personal experiences of racist oppression is way more important than ur Wiki-knowledge. 1. Gypsies is a derogatory term that was used by Europeans to label many nomadic groups coming from Asia and India, not Egypt. The main groups who have survived the bloody racist history are Roma and Sinti and they continue to be repressed by racist Europeans today.

If you're an anthropology major, you should know how racist those anthropologists were pre-1970s-ish. Hitler built is ideology on Anglo-American racist anthropology. These are the ones who officially codified the savage term Eskimos (eaters of raw-flesh) for the Inuit and Yupik.

1. It's ‘Gypsy’. 2. By that logic, ‘German’, ‘Finnish’ and ‘Japanese’ are all ‘racist’ terms. Whether or not they're exonyms or endonyms are entirely irrelevant; what matters is the cultural stigma attached to the words themselves.
@PixelDansIronFist12 жыл бұрын
You don't have to be black to stand against racism, but u do have be human which seems to be a rare thing in the West these days

There's nothing wrong with "Eskimo." They don't even have computers, and if they did, they would be made out of ice. They will never know what we call them.

2. Eskimo is a derogatory term invented by arrogant Europeans who "discovered" them. It was a term to denote them as savages in order to rationalize their murder and racist domination, which continues to this day in the US, Canada and Denmark. And I don't give a shit that the Wikipedia article you read says that is the proper term used to denote them as a people cuz that is based on racist 50s anthropological ethnic labelling.

You're totally and completely wrong. Inuit only applies to roughly half of the eskimo population. It's a tribe name, you'd be offending about 50% of them by calling them Inuits.
@SofiaLina9612 жыл бұрын
This is youtube, not television- they are not going to waste their time researching whether certain words are 'offensive' or not because we all know that it was not meant in an insulting or offensive way. Amir just referred to a well-coined term, he was in no way being disrespectful, so I think you need to calm down because this is the internet and much worse shit is said than this.

Gypsy also refers to pick-pocketers in parts of Europe, so that meaning isn't exactly racist.

"Inuit" is the official term for the native tribe, living near the north pole, "Eskimo" is an insult referring to them... "Eskimo" means "raw-fish-guzzlers" in their language, "Inuit" means "Humans". But honestly, it's ridicules to discuss about it....
