Halloween Ends was so outside the box that it actually made me turn around and change my opinion on Friday the 13th part 5. I honestly never understood why people liked part 5 until I saw Halloween Ends. Then it clicked. Both movies subvert expectations and take big risks despite the possible negative consequences. Say what you will, but both are examples of courageous filmmaking.

“The more he kills, the more he transcends into something else, impossible to defeat. Fear. People are afraid. That is the true curse of Michael.” I always interpreted that as the more Michael kills the larger his legend becomes, the more his evil spreads as it affected the town of Haddonfield which they created their own monster, Corey and eventually led to his downward spiral right before he meets Michael. Also one year later, Halloween Ends still rocks and is still my favorite sequel

The common complaints of Halloween Ends: "Michael was weak in Ends" - That's the point. Throughout most of Kills, he was probably pumped up on adrenaline. The mob beating absolutely wrecked him. He was dying from years of untreated, infected wounds. And he's 65. He is quite literally an old man. He's still a human, afterall. "Michael got beat up by a nerd who got beat up by band bullies" - This one is my favourite. First of all, at this point in the story, Corey was infected with Michael's evil. THAT'S WHY he was able to go toe to toe with him. With this, it also made him stronger. Also, he never "beat up" Michael. He used Michael's own momentum against him, tripping him up causing Michael's head to smack into the ground. Secondly, those "band bullies" (I love how people have to shoehorn the word "band" in there) were literally the same size as Corey. Anyone can get their ass kicked by a group of teenagers. You're lying if you can't. What's more, Paul Brad Logan, the screenwriter of Ends and author of the Ends novelization, said in a recent interview, that he himself was once bullied by members of a marching band. The fact that they are in a band is irrelevant. "It's just an Allyson and Corey love story" - No, it's not that. It's a story about one person's descent into darkness and it showed that his attraction to Allyson turned into obsession because the evil was taking over. THAT is the point of that relationship. "Michael is hardly even in it" - Okay... But he was there the whole time. You could literally feel his presence. He tainted the town with his evil. And you know, he actually had less screentime in the original. Hell, Freddy Krueger only had about 7/8 minutes of screentime in the original Elm Street. But did that matter? No. Because you could still feel his presence. It's all about quality over quantity. Using him sparingly. "It's not a Halloween film" - Except, it quite literally is: a) It continues the story of the OG, 2018 and Kills. b) Michael Myers is in it. c) It takes place on Halloween. How is it NOT a Halloween film? Oh, I get it. Because it's not 2 hours of Michael going house to house, stalking and slaughtering people... Is that what everyone wanted? Just a repeat of 2018 and Kills? Then everyone would complain that Ends was just the same as the others. Now they complain that it's too different. These filmmakers just cannot win with this fanbase. They made the right choice. They branched out. Gave us something fresh. Something unique. And you know what? I would have them do it again. Oh, and let me just touch on what Laurie said in Kills. "The more he kills, the more he transcends into something impossible to defeat: Fear. People are afraid. THAT is the true curse of Michael." People thought she was talking about Michael himself becoming unstoppable, which is why they are pissed off with how he is utilized in Ends. She was literally talking about the fear he creates. The more people are afraid, the more Michael's evil taints the town of Haddonfield. For 4 years after the events of 2018 and Kills, his presence was felt throughout the entirety of Haddonfield. Haddonfield was just a cesspool of dread and fear. And when watching Ends, you can feel it yourself. Not one point did I not think that Michael wasn't there. He was there the whole time. His evil presence was seeping through every crack and crevis of Haddonfield. Symbolism, folks.

I take issue with saying Kills isnt a "true" continuation of the story fro 2018. (that language encourgares the "not a true fan" nonsense so prevalent these days) Thats not even a matter of opinion, thats factually wrong. 2018 is already setting up the theme of "one monster creating others" and establishing that Michael isn't after Laurie. Kills plays to that exactly. Michael isnt after Laurie or her family so he's not heading to the hospital. I think calling this trilogy disjointed, is a bit misguided (i also read the synopsis thats attached to the trailer so i knew what to expect, plus the fact 2018 and Kills was heavyhanded on showing this isnt a Michael vs Laurie story, im still shocked people were so suprised) Far as the writing for Laurie, sorry bro, it was ABSOLUTELY NOT meant for us to take it literally. She;s talking about the fear he causes from his carnage. The only way to take it literal, is to distort what she says. Far as the mob, if Beatrice can kill 50 people in Kill Bill, Bruce Lee can kill 100 men (pick any movie) than Michael can kill a dozen drunk, scared people with no training. Come on man, this the same franchise where Michael slaughtered a whole police force, then couldnt handle Rachel Caruthers by herself. same franchise where he killed a dozen of doctors then couldnt handle Paul Rudd's Tommy Doyle. if he struggled in his prime at 21 with 17 year old girls Laurie, Lynda and Annie, then a TWENTY FOUR year old man can get the best of him when he's old and dying. Overall, my point is some people are just thick headed and wont engage with a work on its own terms. When Kills was coming out, JLC said, "the last movie was laurie's movie, this movie is the town's movie" and instead of accepting that, people just whine and wonder why the focus was on the town instead of Michael and Laurie, with that, there's your explanantion for the vitriol against this trilogy and more specifically, ENDS.

I liked Halloween ends but hated the ending and how Michael was treated. As you said we already saw the showdown between Laurie & Michael in H20 and even in H(2018). I know most will disagree, but Michael should have just died in the sewer system in Halloween ends and been alive just in Corey's head, or left ambiguous where he might be alive and killing people. Corey as the brutal killer after snapping was actually fun to watch and he should have killed more and been revealed as the killer at the end. Other than the ending, I liked Ends better then the first 2. And since the original Halloween 3 didn't have Michael, this one didn't need him either. His absence would have been scary enough.

I liked a number of the ideas presented in this trilogy. What I didn’t like was the lack of continuity and connective tissue to BELIEVE many of those ideas, because the writer/director already established something to the contrary. This happens ALLOT in this trilogy. Now I’m a person that can sit down and watch just about anything, but you (the director) lose me if you go outside the rules you establish. So here’s where continuity hits some pretty rough waters: TOWN HISTORY: DGG establishes in H18 (and early into Kills) that Michael Myers is more urban legend than town monster. This is underscored when one of Allyson’s friends points out that by “today’s standards” the killings of ’78 are fairly tame. Even after Myer’s escapes, only the deputy that witnessed Myers in ’78 understands the gravity of the situation. This void of clarity is illustrated when the Sheriff laughs at Hawkins after he conveys his concerns. The sheriff says, “What are we supposed to do… Cancel Halloween?” So the director makes a point of establishing this town is not ready for Michael Myers. Only Laurie Strode and Officer Hawkins feel the weight of what is unfolding. And you have establishing shots of that shared knowledge, as they glance at one another at the crime scene in the gas station. But here’s where that narrative makes me want to pull my hair out. In Kills, we see media reports of bodies found in Haddonfield. What’s worse the report references the ’78 killings and then SHOWS a picture of Michael Myers… without referencing his name!!!!!! WTF… And this is right after Tommy Doyle has just stood on stage (in that small bar) and given an exaggerated story of his encounter from that period. Oh and the bartender is laughing at him by telling one of the patrons he does this every year as a tradition called “ Tears in their beers,” while laughing. So by every reasonable measure one can establish, this town is not only unaware of Michael Myers, but its own media outlets can’t even remember his name to notify the public he is lose again. They can only connect the dots of the last time there were murders in that town. So how do you organically arrive at a mob mentality of “evil dies tonight” not long after, when the local media can’t even identify him?!!! Oh Tommy Doyle is telling everyone. So HE should recognize this guy right? I mean Myers was recaptured and prosecuted for those murders in 1978, so his picture would be on TV, correct? When Charles Manson was still alive, was anyone going to not recognize him because he was older if he had escaped? I mean, give me a break!!! So all of these social themes they toss around are interesting, but are executed in such a sloppy and contrived manner, you have to almost be ignoring the story to accept these notions when they throw them in. I could start in on Laurie Strode and Michael Myers regarding those contradictions from film to film, but I’ve already written too much on the town and never even finished there. My point to all this is I can accept any number of ideas in stories, but as a writer and director you do have to stick the landing on making them work and not just ask the audience to accept them without a logical rationale for them to exist, if you’ve already gone a different direction to establish an entirely different logic. So I agree with you that all of these ideas on their face are interesting, but the majority of them are all forced and do not work because the town and its characters were not established that way. This goes for Strode and Myers too and their application in Halloween Ends. which is why I spent my time discussing the set up for this last entry. Nothing about the primary characters fits in Ends because they are total opposites of what has been established. "Four years later" is not remotely believable to do an about face, when the whole damn town was doing that after a few hours in 2018. So the logic they use in one is even contradicted in the next film. Again, these ideas are interesting but extremely forced, because the town and its characters have to be changed to fit the ideas, rather than evolve into them organically.

I like Halloween Ends quite a bit but I have some criticisms about it. First, I think it was a missed opportunity that it’s never mentioned if Laurie believed Hawkins when he told her it was never about her. She didn’t react or respond when he told her that in Kills and it isn’t mentioned at all in Ends. I thought that would’ve been a huge blow to her. Maybe she dealt with it in therapy but to not address it in Ends seems strange to me. That false belief is part of the reason why she was so paranoid for decades and why her relationship with her family was ruined, so I would’ve liked some dialogue or narration about that. It would’ve added some nice character development to see that process of her accepting that she was just a random victim and nothing special to Michael. I also find it very odd that Laurie doesn’t seem surprised that Corey was wearing Michael’s mask. I would think she’d be shocked and want to know where he got it since that probably means he knew where Michael was hiding. He doesn’t have to explain anything but I think Laurie should’ve at least enquired about it. I like the movie but I think the execution is a bit sloppy in a few places. I agree it would’ve been nice to see Michael do some more killing. Him teaming up with Corey was an interesting idea but it was dropped too early in my opinion.

You are “baffled” when people say it’s bad? Why? They can give specific reasons as to why it doesn’t work for them. The movie is all over the place. There is a good Halloween movie in there, but there’s also a bad Halloween movie in there. I think those of you that like it focus on that good movie. Those of us, like myself, that don’t- we can’t get past the bad movie. There’s awful character motivation, unnecessary subplot, and unintentional humor that crushes some otherwise cool sequences. This movie feels like they came up with those sequences then tried to construct a story around them. It’s frustrating because this could have been arguably the best Halloween since the original. We didn’t need Corey “killing” the kid. The bullying would have been enough. We didn’t need Michael Myers. Corey should have found him in the sewer, got his evil, then, later someone finds Micheal in the sewers but he’s been dead the whole time and Corey was just imagining all those interactions. That would have made it so much better. That ah ha moment when Michael has been DEAD AS A DOORNAIL the whole movie but his EVIL permeated so much that it helped to corrupt Corey. Plus, it would have made more sense that Michael, since he’s supposed to be HUMAN, died after all the incredible damage he took in Halloween Kills. The end of the movie would more or less play out the same. Laurie can still take down Corey, although I’d have her granddaughter there to see Corey’s true form. I’d also keep the bit where they throw Myers into the scrap metal shredder. Have Laurie toss the mask in there after Michael goes through, unmasked. So, there’s no reason to be baffled. The reasons to not find it to be a good movie are numerous. And it’s all subjective. There are people out there that like Halloween 6. Honestly, I find it to be better than Halloween Ends. At least 6 is whacky, and has those killer 90s electric guitar riffs when Paul Rudd is beating Michael with a pipe.

I don't get people who go out of their way to bash movies they don't like. Or who have dramatic reactions to disliking a movie. I don't like Halloween Ends but I don't like Kills or 2018 either. Saying that, I don't dislike Ends or 2018 (I kind of do dislike Kills though). It's not the Halloween I kind of want I guess but loads of people love this trilogy and hey fair play. Just wish this fanbase acting like their specific opinions on what the series is all about are 100% objectively correct and any movie that deters whatsoever is terrible. The series has developed a fractured fanbase and that's it's own damn fault. Multiple timelines don't help but DGG and co. coming out and saying "we're the first legit sequel to the original and we know what the rest of the movies and their teams got wrong" was just toxic (and kind of unprofessional). H20 did the same thing. They were just asking for fans (and new fans) to be divided and argue back and forth creating this superiority thing about the movies. (I also think Jamie Lee Curtis acting like it's all about her and DGG saying Laurie was the "centrepiece of the franchise" - since when? - was a huge mistake that just further suggests the non-Laurie entries are somehow lesser and is pretty dishonest when you look at the series pre-H20 when Laurie was just the first final girl in a line and Loomis was in the role they've pretty much wrote Laurie into today as if she was always there). That's pretty shitty and I don't think the fans should be adding to that situation. I'm not into the DGG trilogy's style, it's writing, it's tone. I don't really like all that. But I'm glad other people do. The only thing I can absolutely say I properly dislike out and out is the politics these 3 movies created and flat out encouraged at times. They didn't need to do all that. On the bright side all 3 DGG novelisations are great and that trilogy I can really get behind, even if 2018 doesn't really flow into the Kills/Ends novels and even if I wish the movies were more like those books. (also since when was Michael "just a man", the original movie goes out of it's way to say he's somehow supernatural and can't die, I know Carpenter is all "oh he's almost supernatural" as if that makes sense but he and Hill have both pretty much said yeah he's supernatural and the movie's themes and writing massively point towards that, it's the opposite of "true to the original" to make him "just a man", just saying. They've always been pretty upfront that Michael is essentially possessed by some evil force, that's in the novel, it's heavily suggested in the movie, I know it's technically ambiguous but it's not like it's totally ambiguous)

I think the central theme of this trilogy is how trauma affects people. A theory people have about Michael's motive is being traumatized by seeing his sister having sex. H18 is about how Laurie's trauma affected her and her family. HK is about the trauma the town suffered. And HE is about how we let the trauma affect us. Allison tries to move on, and Corey tries to as well, but he just can't. He takes the trauma and lashes out at others. Perpetuating the cycle of trauma and violence.

This is coming from someone who doesn't even particularly enjoy the Halloween films, including '18. Halloween Ends was one of my favorite films of 2022. It was incredibly well-directed and shot, the score was sublime and I was absolutely engrossed in Corey Cunningham's journey. Not to mention the unbelievably great opening. I found the movie to balance the mean-spirited slasher thrills with the emotionally intelligent character beats surprisingly well. It's my favorite in the franchise by a wide margin.

I love Ends (and actually all the Blumhouse films)! It's my #3 or 4 rank in the series. That's why I find the *meet Corey earlier* critique to ring so true. It was such an interesting pivot, you can imagine the coherent trilogy where they introduced him in 2018 and everything builds in a consistent direction, finally paying off in the last film. What we got instead was three standalones that lack a thread tying them all together.

I find it watchable. like other people wish I saw other things but also liked certain things. when it got released on dvd I didnt mind purchasing it. haddonfield has issues. its cursed or something and it shows that. different versions of the boogieman gets created because of the holiday and how people are treated. plus I loved the ending. they kept to that theme. its simple. thats how it was in the first one.

I have softened my opinion about Ends. It's a good movie when viewed by itself. It doesn't cap off the trilogy in a good way for me. I didn't like being mislead about what Ends. Fans picked up on that radio tower in Kills and they responded with "Oh there's a reason for tge radio tower", then there was no reason. Why does Michael stare out the window = never explained. Corey should have been introduced in 2018 and my opinion might be a little different on Ends. You nailed it when you mentioned all three movies feel disconjointed. Kills doesn't feel like the same night even if it is. My brother loves Ends though and that's saying alot.

I have no problem with the kind of direction they made with this movie. My 1 big issue though just kills it for me though. It was simply not scary in the slightest. I didn’t find any of this new trilogy to be scary mind you but this was probably the least scary of the 3. It’s not due to lack of kills. The original had very few kills in it too but what the original built amazing suspense with its lighting, camera movement and sound design/score. These movies don’t even come close to the suspense and overall creepy atmosphere that the original has. I’m not saying that they need to be at that level but these movies feel like they didn’t even try. Halloween Ends was the worst of them though at least for me
@KingRichard1013

To be honest in the David Gordon Green trilogy I thought kills was the best in the entire trilogy. Halloween ends I liked it but the one thing that I really did not like about it is yes Corey manhandling Michael Myers. I personally thought that was bullshit like it doesn’t make sense for a 21-year-old punk kid manhandling someone like Michael Myers who is supposed to be this unstoppable force of nature I don’t know that seems really rubbed me the wrong way and it just seemed a little disrespectful to the character of Michael Myers. Because I’m just sitting there scratching my head going what the fuck like there’s no way in hell that Michael Myers would ever allow this kid to do this he’s supposed to be stronger than him. I mean I get that he’s an old man but that’s no excuse because if Michael in his old age could do all the shit that he did in 2018 and kills then he should not allow a 21 year old kid to manhandle him like that.

Personally, when this movie first came out I hated it. I couldn’t understand why introduce this new character and element into the Halloween mythology so late in the game. But as I’ve seen it more and more, I’ve grown to hate it less. While it is not what I expected the ending of this trilogy to be at first it’s one that looking back works. It gives Laurie her closure, and at the end of it all Laurie is who we were saying good bye too not Micheal

We're going to have to agree to disagree here. What was done to Michael Meyers was unacceptably bad. The entire pass the torch to another premise was both jarring and insane. There was no build-up, no story arc to follow...just one big "we don't know what to do so let's do that!" moment in the film. Of course this was done for a reason... Don't get me started on the absolute rip-off, bait and switch tactics that built this up to be the defining end to the Michael Meyers vs. Lori Strode story arch. No, instead we got to watch a piece of American culture get ripped to shreds so the director can say he "subverted expectations." I just hope the box office crash he experienced because of this nonsense taught him to respect the source material of the films he creates. Although I'm not holding my breath... Addendum- Green did not in fact learn from his mistakes with Halloween Ends. No, he decided more expectations needed to be subverted and his current film is an abject failure. Worst drop off in history...

Corey threatened to kill Laurie if she didn't commit suicide first (5) then flips the script and tells Allyson she wants to kill him which leads to her faking him out with the suicide "did you really think id kill myself?" Its a business at the end of the day. It felt like "We made millions on 2018, lets slap Kills together, and Ends everyone can go F themselves." I rewatched it for the second time when i got my steelbook, i had a much better experience the second time when i was knowing what to expect! Still had some scenes that bothered me but it was OK! As i was commenting the other day the last time i watched it i loved it! I still think its a little bit rushed in the finale! And i think Hawkins and Lindsey was under used in the movie. This biggest problem I had with it is Laurie ends Halloween Kills with a "I'm coming for you Michael" for killing her daughter, then Ends starts off completely ignoring that and having Laurie living a normal life. It just completely threw out the ending of Kills as if it didn't happen. Also, too little Michael for a Halloween finale. I also don't like how they had a teenager make Michael his bitch. Outside of that, I thought it was okay. I don't begrudge you loving it. I loved Halloween 2018 and liked Kills a lot, despite too many characters being dumb and the town going after Myers plot line.

It has an interesting idea, a plausible one too. But it does not work. The script is just not that clever. Is it as bad as part 5? As bad as Resurrection? Halloween Ends, well, I hate this film more than others. For me, there's only one good film: John Carpenter is right; after the '78 film, it's over, and it's the perfect ending. Michael Myers is just a man, a very sick one, but just a man. That is scary. It's not a virus, it's not a monster; it's something that really could happen. But then they decided to make Michael Myers an unstoppable killing machine. Well, again, this movie contradicts that idea. The worst part is that the movie is boring for many reasons-the backstories, the romance. If you like it because it's different, well, yes, it's really different, but it happens too little in the movie. And then, ,' it's the same ending, Michael Myers dies-the same ending since 1981. What is really not precisely innovative is not new or original.

@@DS-616 I have always respected your opinions, and you mine. I guess I’m just getting at, just ignore it. Lord knows I try my best sometimes, but I’m not always successful in it lol. I’ve got love for you, don’t ever think otherwise

Although I gave the film a 6.5 out of 10 the novel on the other hand gets a 9 out of 10. The novel for Halloween: Kills has the better ending for me giving the Kills novel a 9.5 out of 10. The Halloween (1978) novel gets a 10 out of 10. Halloween (2018) novel gets a 8.5 out of 10. You have done such a good job on covering these novels. You should check out the Halloween (1978) novel it’s definitely a fun read. This may sound crazy but Allyson possibly becoming the next Michael Myers? SIGN ME UP! After all of the stuff that she’s been through logically I could see it happening. You could do another movie with Allyson that leads into a ten episode long limited series.

I can't tell you how happy I am that this movie was made. It is easily the most engaging sequel in the franchise for me. I bought into 100% and loved every minute!
