*SPOILER WARNING. Don’t read this comment if you haven’t seen the movie yet.* After being disappointed by both Halloween 2018 and Halloween Kills last year, I had little faith in this movie being any different and decided to wait for a streaming release before seeing it. And good thing I watched this on Peacock, because if I had paid the extra money to see this in the theaters, I would have been f***ing PISSED! They completely mismarketed this movie in all the PR & trailers to make audiences think they were getting one type of movie when they were actually getting something they didn’t sign up for. Now, to be fair, I do think this is a much better written film than Halloween Kills. Halloween Kills didn’t have much of a story at all really. It was just “Michael and the Haddonfield mob pit against each other for one night. Kill, kill, F***ING KILL!!!” And that wasn’t interesting to me; the kills were entertaining, but I wanted a good story to go along with all that carnage, and Kills didn’t deliver on that. This film at least does have a *somewhat* interesting narrative, and the cringy over-dramatic Shakespearean dialogue from the last film has been heavily toned down here, which I do appreciate. Laurie Strode also feels the most like a genuine relatable human character in this final film of the trilogy and the closest to the original Laurie Strode from 1978; I felt they went a little ham-fisted with the way they tried to make Laurie a Sarah Connor type character in the first two films of the trilogy. The problem: At its core, I think the story they wanted to tell in this film is admittedly a compelling idea that could have worked as it’s own standalone Halloween anthology film….but it has no place being in THIS movie that’s supposed to be the final film in a trilogy & marketed heavily as a Michael/Laurie centric story. This film takes some wild, bold, ballsy, risky decisions with the direction they take certain characters that is going to heavily divide Halloween fans, and ultimately I feel will earn this film the title of “The Last Jedi” of the Halloween franchise (And based on both my experiences with the Halloween Facebook groups I'm in and your rant on toxic fandoms, that notion seems to be being proven right). Some people I’ve seen have been praising the film for how unique and fresh and different it is. Others, like me, will be up in arms & bewildered by why they chose to take such wild swings with the story, when all they needed to do is deliver on the film they advertised to us. And they do give us that, but it doesn’t become the primary focus of the story until the last 15 or so minutes of the film, and even then, it feels like a rushed afterthought. This film is supposed to be about Michael and Laurie coming to blows one final time; it’s in the name of the movie even. Why are we sidelining that and focusing so much on Corey Cunningham, a seemingly random character we don’t give a shit about & have not met before in this trilogy up to this point. Why is he the central character of this final film (Which btw, his character arc in this film ultimately feels inconsequential with what they do with him by the end)? Also, because they focus so much on the Corey character, they REALLY neuter the character of Michael Myers to an almost insulting degree in this film, which is not gonna sit well with a lot of fans. Not only does it make no sense, nor is it ever properly explained, why Michael is so pathetically weak considering the way the last film ended, or why he would let Corey go instead of killing him outrighg & team up with him later to kill people & essentially become “Stabman & Robin” (Which was never his MO in any of the previous films), or how Corey, a 5 foot something kid who’s bullied by band class students, is able to overpower & beat the shit out of the 7 foot epitome of evil that is Michael later in the film, but he only gets three kills in this film. Let me repeat that: Michael Myers. The face of the Halloween franchise. The guy who we go to these movies to see in the first place. Is not only barely in the film, but also only gets three kills in the WHOLE movie. While the majority of the kills are committed by a nobody character we don’t give a crap about…WTF? (The kills themselves are also pretty weak and are a HUGE step down from Halloween Kills imo, with the exception of one or two standouts, neither of which are committed by Michael). This film basically tells Busta Rhymes from Halloween Resurrection to hold its beer with how much the character of Michael Myers is shit on in this movie. The ending does save the film somewhat from being a complete disaster, as it does have the integrity to definitively kill off Michael & END the story (Which is in the name of the movie) on a hopeful note for Laurie Strode, which considering this is Jamie Lee Curtis’s final outing as the character, I thought was a satisfying way to send her off from this franchise; They don’t cop out and tease the possibility of Michael returning for another movie or whatever. But the final fight between Laurie & Michael, the thing the entire movie was sold on & the thing we came to the movie to see in the first place, I felt was way too short & anticlimactic, and Laurie kicks Michael’s ass way too much. The fight imo should have been at least a few minutes longer/more drawn out & have Michael give Laurie a bit more of a beating, so as to really raise the stakes & tension about who’s gonna live and who’s gonna die. There are quite a few other issues I have with this film as well including logic issues, plot contrivances, missed opportunities in character development, etc. But I think I’ve been ranting long enough and don’t wanna spend another five hours in this comments section lol. TL,DR version: Halloween Ends is a huge disappointment, and is a weak conclusion to the Halloween H40 trilogy imo. It is a movie with a story that should have been its own standalone horror film; it should NOT have been shoehorned to be the central focus of this final Halloween film and distract/take precedence over the thing the film sold itself on & what we came to see: Michael and Laurie’s rivalry coming to an end. PSA: Really appreciate you calling out the toxic fandom in your review. One of the most annoying frustrating things I hear from people who are fans of the movie is "PeOpLe wHo HaTe oN ThIs mOvIe aRe NoT tRuE fAnS, aNd ThEy JuSt dIdN't gEt WhAt tHeY WeRe gOiNg FoR! REEEEE!!!!" I hate remarks like that because it is such a non-argument & a lazy dismissal/deflection of criticism trying to make it seem like it's the VIEWERS's fault that they didn't enjoy the movie, and ultimately it stems from a place of elitism (And anyone who saw the argument I had a couple years ago with another toxic KZbin commenter on my comment that got pinned by Kylie for her Halloween 2018 review will understand what that's like). This is a slasher film, not some high concept multilayered arthouse project. You shouldn't have to watch the film multiple times to "get it" per se and actually enjoy it. If my gut instinct tells me while watching a film like this that the movie sucks, I'm gonna trust that instinct.

I'm sure this movie will get its flowers in the following years once people cool off on it not being a Michael Myers movie. I respect your opinion on not enjoying it, but I don't think it's a bad movie at all. It's honestly probably in my top 3 of the Halloween franchise. DGG implemented the DNA of his earlier films into this and I personally enjoyed the direction he took Michael. The events of Kills caught up to him and he needed a new vessel to assist him in getting back out there. The idea that Michael is basically an infection on the town of Haddonfield is very Stephen King and cool. I also knew about the Corey twist when it first leaked earlier in the year, so maybe I would've hated this film going in blind rather than already accepting this was going to be something different. I also read the novelization and it's WAY more in-depth about certain elements and gives Michael more screen time. Sadly, I don't think a 2hr30min Halloween movie would've flied for some people, but there was definitely stuff from the novelization (which was based on drafts for the actual film) that could've been added in to make everything more cohesive.

@@B1Kobe0824 everyone is entailed to their own option. To me this movie could be a mess, to you it might be the best Halloween movie ever made and that’s alright. No problem there. What annoys me about your comment is your assumption that I and others who think this movie is messy are just “watching the films” on a surface level and just don’t understand it. Speaking for myself, I think this movie is messy from a technical and writing perspective. I know what they were going for, I’ve seen all the interviews with Green. I understand what he was aiming for, however, me thinking that he did not succeed in achieving what he was aiming for is not me “not understanding”. I’m a filmmaker and a writer and when I watch movies I dissect everything from that perspective. I’ve even talked with Kylie saying I wish I could just turn that off and enjoy a movie for what it is. Again if you enjoyed the movie, more power to you. I wish I could’ve done the same. I think this film is messy not because I don’t understand it but from a technical, storytelling, and marketing prospective, and that’s just my opinion.

At the beginning of Ends I thought “ok this is maybe a cool concept” but by the middle I knew that this movie was just a bad idea. Like they throw away all the setups of characters in the previous movies and they introduce Corey out of nowhere and make him the focus? 😭 Because it’s the last movie, it should be all about Michael and his evil, maybe make it even more chaotic and epic than Kills. but instead he’s barely in the movie and his death doesn’t feel earned or climactic enough at the end….. 🙄

Ok, 1st of all... "THANK YOU"... I have literally been waiting for your review. I have a lot of respect for your input and experience on all films that you speak of. I couldn't agree more on everything you said about this film. I went to see Halloween ends with my husband. We have been going to the theaters to see every single film and I was not going to break that tradition. I went to see it blindly as well, I took your advice of not watching previews, and after watching Barbarian, I totally understood why. I went into it knowing that this might not be a good film... I mean if we have learned anything about sequels is that, they are not all created equal, and with Blumhouse being involved I had low expectations honestly. A part of me wanted to hate the film for all the reasons mentioned; the introduction of a new character so late in the game, the time frame, the fact that you dont see Michael Myers very much etc etc. But I couldn't.... I love Halloween, I love Jamie Lee Curtis and her character. I personally got what I wanted in a way, a last show down between Myers and Laurie and his final demise, and I got it. The kills where good ( not better than Halloween Kills, but the blow torch scene I mean, come on and the Radio Dj, brilliant). All in all, was it the best, no... but it was closure for me. I am so sad and tired of all these people breaking the film apart and doing the whole, should have, could have, would have. Like we get it, you could have made a killer film, but you didn't so sit down and shhhh...lol. Anywho, again thank you for this video...I literally enjoy all of your videos and sorry for my bad spelling and writing, English is my second language so at times I I don't make sense..lol. They completely did a major mistake with Halloween Ends. They took a icon who has a devoted following for the last 40 plus years and made him a weak old man in his final film. Michael is a force of nature. John Carpenter said so himself. The entire time I watched Halloween Ends I felt like I was watching an imposter Myers. Instead of being an unstoppable force of evil as he should have been, Myers instead relies on Corey to do the killing for him. Not the way to treat the most iconic Horror character in history.

I know this film didn’t work for a lot of people but it did for me. I feel this film pays respects to what John Carpenter wanted the Halloween series to be, a focus on different horror stories taking place during Halloween and majority of the film was about that along with healing from trauma/evil before it corrupts you hence Corey. This trilogy went from generational trauma to community trauma to finally healing from that trauma. Halloween Ends may not have Michael Myers at his best however it has the best version of the essence of Evil (how it doesn’t die but changes shape). For me, this a satisfying conclusion to the Laurie vs Michael saga, this is my favorite Jamie Lee Curtis’ performance as the iconic Laurie Strode, the best directed and written in the trilogy, and my 3rd favorite Halloween film. I hope this film will gain its appreciation that it deserves but if you don’t like it you don’t like it, respect. As for the toxic fandom, Scream 5’s motive is already aging like fine wine

Well said. i agree completely. You dont have to be the least bit intelligent to figure out most people wont like the movie for obvious reasons. Ignoring the crying about the lack of Michael, there arent very many sound criticisms as far as writing goes. Its a simple film that thankfully never went woke. I have it at 7 or 8 out of 10. Far better than that H20 bullshit and definitely superior to Resurrection. For me, this trilogy stands behind the first 2 movies, and ahead of Zombies films. In second place. And its like they forgot billy was the easiest ghostface to know before the climax. like they fr sittin here saying that a girls bruise is an easier give away to her killing someone than the guy who dropped black gloves and a mobile phone in front of the girl he just tried to kill in the 90s.... like if you just didnt like it thats cool but i dont like people denying something can exist or people acting like they knew within 5 seconds the plot or twist in a movie.

For me I think I agree if the Alison Corey serial killer relationship was an entirely separate movie of its own it could've been somewhat interesting if done right. Honestly though I was so bored by it and it made no sense to me why Alison would willingly choose to be in such a toxic relationship with someone so boring and obviously very damaged not to mention the kid murdering. I almost quit the movie many times I just wanted to see how it ended. The whole Micheal thing was confusing as well like is he supernatural or not that could've also dramatically change my opinion of the character and how he was portrayed. Also the whole he was living in a sewer for 4 years. I don't even want to think about that except to say he was definitely eating people right? Lastly from Micheals pov what the heck do you think he was thinking was happening? The entire movie was so weird and really didn't make any sense. I watched it after just watching the new Jeepers Creepers movie which was absolute garbage and I would still watch it over this movie tbh. I think you read into it a lot more than I did being a Halloween fan which I appreciate and hence why I wanted to listen to your review. So I really didn't like this movie but as for how they wrapped up the story I was fine with it. Micheal had a good death, unless he is supernatural and somehow he returns lol.

30:54 additional comment That aspect of the film pissed me off It wasn’t Laurie who broke him out of that loonie bin. It was the doctor And Michael could’ve went anywhere after that Bus crashed, he chose to go back to Haddonfield, and when he did go back to Haddonfield, he didn’t directly go for Laurie, he went for anyone who he could kill, he didn’t care for Laurie, he only came after her because she was there at the moment. All Laurie did was try to warn everyone that he would escape and prepared for it. You can say that he was provoked after Kills but he went into her house and technically, she’s defending herself from a trespasser. That argument that Laurie provoked him is extremely weak. He would’ve repeated his actions in 18 and Kills whether Laurie factored in or not.

Out of nowhere he decides to start talking about various concerts he's been to through the years and encourages his viewers to do the same. My biggest issue with this film was none of it made sense with the way Kills ended. All of the momentum was just gone thanks to the time jumps. Michael goes from being the strongest he ever has been to now some weak old man who can barely breath looking for an heir. WHAT? The concept of Corey was a great idea, but it should have been a separate movie. It should have been a movie that comes after Ends. Ends should have been on the same night as 2018 and Kills like they advertised when Kills and Ends were first announced. I guess my biggest issue with Corey is it amounted to nothing. I agree, the butchering of Allyson was terrible and clearly Matichak didn't agree with the direction of her character either considering how half-assed she played her. What was up with the cop boyfriend that is twice her age? Another issue is that pretty much all of the new characters are unlikable jerks. They just exist so they can be killed off without any care in the world that they died. There's also not much in the way of cinemetography. 2018 had that great scene of Michael going on his killing spree with the camera following him from behind, done as if it were one take. Kills had the moment of him killing the firefighters in front of the burning house. This, I guess the 3 seconds of the staircase from the opening scene... Overall, this trilogy is the Thorn trilogy all over again. The first movie was fantastic and one of the best of the franchise. The second was heavily flawed with terrible dialog but there are great moments of suspense and horror to be had. However, the ending leaves off for a sequel. The third does an unnecessary time jump and completely disrespects Laurie's family to help create a piss poor movie. The only difference is the last 20 minutes of Ends saves the film from being worse than Curse.

I love Laurie's growth in this movie. We saw in 2018 and Kills that she basically destroyed her own life and her daughter's childhood by chasing this idea that Michael was after her, only to realize that he is indifferent to her and then lose half the town + her daughter. It makes sense to me that she would then try to change, after reaching all those resolutions. She would work on herself to be the best she can be for Allyson. Her development could have gone either way, but I found this the most interesting direction! Also - there was a comment on Reddit that I read that really helped contextualize this movie for me. They discussed how Kills is the true climax of the trilogy, and Michael essentially won. This movie is more like an epilogue showing what he has done after winning - essentially retiring, only to come out one more time. It's also why we focused on a new character's turn to the dark side, because it serves as an epilogue while also showing that "evil never dies, it changes shape." Admittedly, I think the end of Corey's arc was mishandled - he probably should have just disappeared in the end. Overall, I enjoy the movie, but oddly find it stronger when it focuses on the Corey stuff (even though that is not what one would expect in a Halloween film, so it makes total sense to be bored). That was a pretty complete story, only to be abruptly cut off to then tack on the ending between Laurie and Michael. I don't know, it's certainly an uneven and imperfect film, but I have a feeling everyone involved knew that it would be, but they took the risk anyway. I say all this as a lifelong fan of this franchise (so, more than 20 years now, ahem) - I'm glad we got something like this, because it tackles some really interesting themes imo. It also keeps things unpredictable. And of course, I'm glad we got a definitive ending to the Laurie/Michael story and to Michael himself, after Resurrection took that post-H20.

I will say, as someone who is not a big fan of Halloween bc I don't like invincible killers, I like the Ends approach to the franchise more than the usual invincible killer going around and killing a bunch of people. The older I get the less I enjoy gratuitous kills and I find myself enjoying character driven stories a lot more. I do agree that they did Alysson dirty though. It was painful to watch her scenes. But Michael to me was never the star of this DGG's franchise. To me this franchise is all about Laurie, her family and the town. The victims are the main characters to me and that's why I like it. It actually shows people's traumas and struggles because of him. Scream is my favourite slasher franchise but my biggest criticism of it is how it doesn't explore that. After every kill it's like nothing happened. The first time I saw someone showing emotion over someone's death was in Scream 5. I think that in order to make Scream darker like Halloween we need emotional baggage instead of more gore.
@chriscze61532 жыл бұрын
Halloween is not my favorite franchise, but the original is my favorite horror movie ever, and one of my top two or three favorite movies ever. I have a lot of nostalgia and love for Laurie Strode, Michael Myers, his mythology, and I find the franchise to be interesting - I appreciate it took some wild leaps at times, crashed and burned where appropriate, and gave some solid sequels along the way. I quite enjoyed Halloween 2018 and found Kills to be pretty mediocre. I had low expectations going into this because of course, but I ended up really liking Ends. After my first viewing, it might even be my favorite Halloween sequel ever, which isn't necessarily saying much. But I looked at this movie not as a closing chapter to a trilogy but more as a movie. I like a decent slow burn, I like there's attention given to characters, the entire first hour of seeing our characters in Haddonfield just living their lives I thought was extremely interesting and not boring at all. And Corey is definitely a controversial addition late into the trilogy, but again, with Michael being a sewer rat, and evil never dying, only changing shape, I feel like Corey was as good a representation of that as we could expect or hope. This was a much more somber movie than the previous ones. I felt real emotion and catharsis watching this movie, because even if Corey was not a character I necessarily needed or wanted in this film, I felt incredibly bad for him, and I was happy to see such a forlorn character gain something through the evil that had been cast on him. They wanted a villain? They turned him into one and they got it. I was extremely happy seeing him kill the bullies and especially his parents. Society is fucked and this was Greene's best interpretation of that in this trilogy. Some people seem to dislike how the first 90 minutes is so different from the last 20 minutes, but I think the last 20 minutes are perfect. Especially the final closing shots of Laurie, Frank, and the house. I didn't see it as two separate bodies, I thought the third act flowed well from the previous two and I dunno. "Don't Fear the Reaper" was just a perfect send off into the credits for me too. As a standalone film, I think this was just so good.

* Spoilers below!! * I'm also mixed on this one. I appreciate that they tried something different, but it went too far outside the more grounded Halloween lore. It's like they were trying to remake Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, where a weakened killer channels his evil through a teenager to try and get his power back.

I don't envy the writers at all. They needed to do something different because we didn't need more of the same from Kills. Wouldn't have been satisfying to rehash ideas from other Halloween movies either. I feel they were forced to fill up the runtime with something besides Michael killing and the final fight

I don't see how the final climax was at all satisfying. It was laughable that a 60 year old woman and her grand daughter could overpower and kill an antagonist that killed an entire town and squadron of firefighters in the last film. Also in Kills, Lori specifically says Michael is the embodiment of our fears and grows stronger with killing. Then in this film she specifically says he's just a man. Why did they reverse all the things they set up last time? Ugh

I saw Halloween Ends with one of my buddies on the Peacock app at his apartment. Originally, we were going to see it in theaters with a group of friends, but unfortunately they had other plans. Anyways, we love this film. We were anticipating to see the ultimate showdown between Laurie Strode and the Shape. However, the ending was however disappointing, although it was satisfying that Laurie and Alyson finally put an end to this freaking moron's madness, it still felt rough around the edges. Not to mention a small dose of the whodunnit aspect with the character, Corey teaming up with Michael Myers until the showdown with Laurie. What also ticked me off with this film is that, even though it's cool that Nick Castle (who was The Shape in the OG Halloween and doubled as said killer in the 2018 sequel and Kills), it was disappointing that we didn't get any cameos of Scout Taylor-Compton or Danielle Harris from the non canon Halloween films. It would have been great if they did make a small appearance in the film, better yet interact with Laurie Strode (the one and only Jamie Lee Curtis). Heck, the aforementioned celebrities would have met Jamie if it weren't for their situation.

I dint mind the film but I understand why others dislike it. I think some complaints are the waste of will Patton why have him survive past 2018 and not do anything with him at all afterwards.
