If you don't mind a bit of mess (usually happens with crushed ice than shaved), you can mix it right away...but if you want less mess, eat it until the ice has a chance to melt a bit. It makes it easier to mix and you can even drink it too. But yeah, ice texture and portion size make a big difference in the ease of mixing.

I've never mixed mine. Lol. I guess it makes sense now that I look back on it. I'll stay without mixing it though. I sort of like separating some of the ingredients for certain foods. It's gonna get mixed in your mouth anyway, so that's kind of my thought process when eating it. Not Filipino myself, but I grew up around a lot of my friends' families whom are Filipino and naturally I've pretty much had a lot of Filipino cuisine growing up. Every corner was either Mexican restaurant or any other Asian restaurant you can think of from Japanese/Korean BBQ and all the way to more South East Asian foods. I guess I was lucky living in a more diverse area. I literally couldn't imagine not having all the variety of food I've had throughout he years. Haha.

Your halo-halo looked amazing, Emmy! Looks as good as the ones they serve in restaurants here. And I love how you even made your own ube ice cream. Looks just like the ube ice cream served in tubs here, I actually thought it was store-bought. Next time you make this, try mixing it all up together before eating it so you get a bit of everything in one spoonful. Try also adding a bit of a crunchy element next time like rice crispies or cornflakes. Traditionally, we add what is called pinipig, which is essentially toasted flattened sticky rice. 😊 Oh, and you also gotta try adding bananas cooked in brown sugar syrup, it's great! Anyways, terrific job, Emmy! That ice-shaving bit was totally hilarious. 😂 And this made me crave for halo-halo, too. 😄

We usually add rice crispies or what we locally called pinipig (dried flattened toasted rice) or if not available, we use corn flakes for added texture and nutty aroma. Its usually placed on top. This favorite Filipino dessert is usually mixed altogether. When everything is well mixed, what you scoop from the bottom of your bowl/glass adds to the surprise of what sweet preserve you're going to get. Thanks for featuring our all time favorite dessert! Ok, so I have only had this once, from a Filipino store in Canada. The version I had was in a tall glass, which I believe is more common than a bowl. However, one thing I noticed was that the most important flavour in the one I had (although not necessarily my favourite) was the toasted rice, which I believe is called pinipig in Tagalog, but also coconut milk. I feel that those two elements are key and missing from this recipe. Any thoughts from the Filipinos out there?
@LeahLaushway7 жыл бұрын
kjgomes I'm half-Flip and have never seen coconut milk used in halo-halo, just condensed milk as the liquid. Pinipig isn't used all the time, either. I'd say the lecheflan, sweetened beans, jackfruit, and nata de coco are the most common ingredients, in my experience.
@kjgomes7 жыл бұрын
Cool. Thanks for the info! Actually, now that I think about it, maybe it was all the other coconut products that gave it that coconut like flavour which I thought was coconut milk. I don't think there was too much condensed milk used in the one I had as it didn't have that dairy taste. I was told by Filipino friends that the one I had was pretty authentic. And, I for one was not a fan of the pinipig as I felt like that's all I tasted, so I'm glad it's not used all the time. Anyway, I still liked it. Next, I want to try the halo halo ice cream I saw at the local Asian store!
@kpfernandico7 жыл бұрын
kjgomes I'm a Filipino. I think what you're talking about is the Buko Halo. It's also halo halo but mixed with coconut ingredients and pinipig (sometimes) . It is usually served in a coconut shell to serve as a bowl. :)
@kjgomes7 жыл бұрын
Ah cool. I looked up Buko Halo-Halo online and it seems to be closer to what I had. What I had came in a glass and with a straw (and a spoon). It was definitely something you could suck liquid out of. The one in this video seems to be more similar to korean binsu, so just shaved ice with toppings as opposed to a drink. I guess like everything, different people make it in different ways.
@mingming49837 жыл бұрын
kjgomes PINIPIG!!! They add a different dimension to eating halo-halo because they're so crispy. Like, there's a sudden crunch between the weird, slimy and gummy bites :-) It takes like nothing though, so any other substitute would be good, like the choco cigar Emmy used a garnish. Though the chocolate kinda disrupts the flavor... maybe.
@rockyraab82907 жыл бұрын
The most remarkable thing was that you were able to assemble authentic ingredients! From what I gather watching TV shows, the essence of that dessert is "no two bites alike" and you accomplished that admirably.

In my place, halo-halos usually sold by the households are sweetened using sugar instead of condensed milk. "minatamis na saging" or sweetened banana added to its sweetness too. You can also add sweet potatoes in there which is my favorite! And like what they said, for me it's better to mix everything first. And I also want the ice to be melted before I dig into it. 😊

Ok Emmy I have something you might like. I used to live in Tucson, Arizona and I was a frequent visitor to the swamp meet. There was this cup that was sold briefly with all types of favorites in it and if I remember correctly it was: a plastic cup filled mostly with coated peanuts, pieces of chili spiced tamarind, salsghetti by the Lucas brand, takis, and it was dosed in chamoy and lime juice, I swear it's the greatest combination! Longtime fan, I love you !!!

How could rockhard ice cubes vibrating against plastic while being chopped up with metal blades,possibly make noise?

Awesome job!!! Halo halo is one of my favorite desserts! Because of its complexity it is so much fun to eat...many flavors and textures that give your mouth and taste buds a very tasteful and delicious experience! I like to stir mine up together and every mouthful becomes a delightful surprise....like a box of chocolate....you never know what your going to get...but it's always mmmmm mmmmmmm goooooooood! 😋
