I'm from seattle and there are a lot of geoducks here so I just assumed everyone knew what they are. and then my friend moved here from arizona and was SO confused when we went to the market and saw some. my dad told me they used to be super common and cheap and would make the perfect clam chowder replacement because clams were more expensive. then people realized they could charge more for them, which may be one of the reasons it cost so much

I can't believe we ate for free (excluding transportation and clamming 'guns' cost) what she just paid $80 for just one. I guess it's true. I'm from Washington, and I grew up around scuba divers. My father was an instructor. He'd take his students to Hood Canal in Puget Sound for their open water weekend. I remember one weekend when I was 8, my dad said he was going to try to get a "gooey duck". Obviously I had no idea what it was. My mental image was of a half rotten duck found 50ft underwater. At the end of the dive, dad and three other divers managed to make their catches. Phallic is a very good description. After that, I honestly thought clams had a 3ft penis, though the shell was kind of odd. I just couldn't figure out how the shell could close when the penis was pulled back inside. It didn't help my misunderstanding when the geoduck my dad was holding expelled the water from it's stomach. Everyone's gotta pee, right? My misunderstanding aside, the cooking started that night. One was chopped up, then fried in butter with garlic, onion, and mushrooms. So good! The failed experiment was some idiot going to the store down the street, and buying a box of Shake&Bake. A bite was taken from one, no one touched the rest. The last two that won the evening was tempura battered. A bunch of sauces were set out, but that was mostly for the other items that got battered and fried that night. As much as everyone enjoyed the geoduck that night, except the Shake&Bake disaster, dad declared that digging them out was too much of a hassle to do it again. The others who had managed to get one agreed. None really enjoyed being up to their armpit in mud trying pull the thing out, with no real leverage other than pushing off the soft mud they were already digging in.
