Moving to unreal will 100% make development easier. Unreal engine is incredibly standard in the industry, taught in schools, etc. While we'll lose some of the fun bugs that emerge from weird proprietary code, it'll save a lot of headaches. Kerbal Space Program and TF2 both suffered from these problems. Kerbal's physics engine development siphoned employees and arguably resulted in the studio being shut down, and TF2's dusty old source code sounds like a real bear to cut through.

I will always have a soft spot for the Quake engine, Fast Inverse Square Root, Reflection Math, etc., it paved the way for a lot of other engines to not only look good but play just as well. Quake gave us "Slide" so Source could give us "Surf" , Quake gave us lightmaps so Unreal could give us baked lighting, and Quake gave us Prediction/Rendition compensation for modern games to have latency compensation. Quake's story crawled so Half-Life's could walk, and later on for Modern games to finally run. I miss the days where innovation and storytelling, not just graphical fidelity and trend-riding, that made a game stand out and be memorable.

One aspect to this engine change that I think we as a community need to be really skeptical about is the degree to which it will likely facilitate the godawful labor practices 343 has been doubling down on for the better part of a decade at this point. A major reason that Slipspace caused the problems that it did was because the studio insisted on having such a disproportionate fraction of its workforce be limited to contracting rather than bringing them on as employees. Thats also the major driver for how muddled and unfocused Infinites development was; by every 8 to 12 months a siginificant portion of the dev team would be brand new people. Even putting aside the obvious moral issues that come along with working so hard to undercompensate their workforce as much as possible, shifting to Unreal won't fix a lot of these underlying problems that it creates, especially if they decide to double down even further on their reliance on contractors.
@Farmsy__Ай бұрын
The management I assume that is responsible for a lot of these practices are all gone. Leadership was gutted. But it will remain to be seen.
@trekker683Ай бұрын
@@Farmsy__as I understand it it was Microsoft that forced that practice on 343.
@wruenvadamАй бұрын
The difference here is that it is already a well built and established engine. A lot of the work has already been done. Slipsace was built from scratch which is way more time consuming and considering the time that Microsoft wanted to release it, it just wasn't possible for them to get everything quite right with the engine and still have the full vision of the game completed.
@willshea2460Ай бұрын
Well if it's an already existing and accessible engine I don't think contract work would be terrible. But they should limit what positions are contract because before it seemed like almsot every position even Coders were contracted.
@wruenvadamАй бұрын
@@willshea2460 Yeah but the base engine for Halo Infinite was built by contractors, and since its new, and not all the information was passed down before they left, It made it really difficult to work on. I know you aren't into Halo as much these days so a couple of quick things to point out and some that were covered in this post trailer interviews. - Multiple projects in development - Projects have been in development "for a couple years now" - Working in UE5 opens the door for onboarding new talent 1000% easier. - New leadership specifically says they are doing things differently and are not making games how they used to. - A CE remake has been rumored for a while now and the fact that they used CE models and MK.5 is almost certainly no coincidence. We very well could see the CE remake next year and that being used as the testbed for the next mainline game (which has been rumored to be in development for a couple years) and that could come in 2026 marking the 25th anniversary as the franchise as a whole. MS/343/Halo Studios themselves have specifically pointed out the 25th anniversary as something they are looking at to have something big for.

The upside of the Project Foundry, is that it ISN'T a traditional test bed/tech demo. They said in an interview with Xbox Wire that they designed these environments while strictly adhering to how they would develop the environments FOR a game. And that, while these showcases aren't showing off a new game specifically, that pretty much all of it is "game asset" ready. So it IS beautiful, but more importantly, it's what we can actually expect. SO stoked.

Halo 4 was a bad direction and not halo. But it wasnt a terrible story and you could write yourself out of it. Halo 5 made it so you couldnt write yourself out of it. @@treycarter6736 We're all 12 when we play video games. Overall consensus on Halo games. 1-3 are a beloved trilogy. 4-5 were a departure from previous story and storytelling (Locke viewpoint), I appreciated the attempt to jump to the new story but it fell flat for myself and most. Infinite (AKA 6) I REALLY enjoyed the gameplay of the campaign, but was beyond confused at the story as it completely left behind 4-5 and didn't explain what the hell happened. As well as killing Cortana offscreen, these were MONSTROUSLY stupid ideas (I used the term stupid, must have been 12 at some point in my life). The books and other games were supplements to the main game, not to be made the forefront. Not touching the lack of game support for a year either. This studio has seen the sliding of a LOVED franchise, and you ain't convincing anyone cause you tagged a new name on the sign out front. They may get some love for remaking the old games, but they get no street cred back till they start making their own.

@@m0urn1ng5tar5 the problem is Bungie more or less stopped caring about their own canon when they worked on Halo 3. There's too many inconsistencies, A lot of Bungie's lore doesn't add up AFTER Halo 2 and then in their pissing match with Microsoft they retconned the holy Trinity of books that arguably did a better job at telling the story then they did. All of this looks good but there are certain key things that are very subtle that gave halo its unique characteristics. Remember when you enter a new area and the screen UI vanished for a second and a phrase appeared on the bottom right corner saying something like "full circle" after landing on the new alpha halo in H3 for example while a new soundtrack starts playing which builds up slowly as the action progresses in the mission. Stuff like is is something that boosts up the gaming immersion to a new level and Bungie back in the day nailed it. The undertone lifts the vibe and feeling in a mission to a whole new level.

One thing i miss about the original trilogy, odst and reach was the story had such high stakes. We were fighting to save humanity from extinction. It feels like 343 didnt even try to make an epic story because it would be hard to compete with those games story wise. The banished and stuff really always felt like a cheap covenant knock off and not much of a threat because they are just the remnants of an already defeated military. I think we need a proper flood threat or maybe they remake the originals, or we have some halo games set in the time between reach and halo 1.
