Wow's argument was pretty much that the flood was too smart (in its later forms) to be considered zombies. But in reality, although intelligent, the flood still has the same zombie characteristics, that is the ability to reanimate corpses, and the drive to consume/infect other species.

I almost feel like even though anyone infected alive by the flood are not completely dead and the host it controls still feels pain! Still Sees through the eyes & cannot control its actions until fully decimated! Their minds are taken over and consumed as well, the only 2 times that has happened was when the first appearance of the Flood appeared, a soldier got infected by an old string of the flood an was actively fighting the commands of the Flood (Literally only gaining control because his body felt pain and caused him to gain back control) while begging his own fellow soldiers to kill him after revealig everything he could about the flood, the other time being Captain Keys due to his memory ship implanted in his brain, with caused him to be tortured for hours as he refused with all his will power to give up the location of earth

In the game Stellaris, one of the species categories that you can play as is called Necroids. They're categorized by being intelligent, and their means of reproduction is taking over other sentient species. There is a host of infection strategies, from fungal spores, to viruses that encode DNA alteration, to parasites that puppet the meatmech, and more. This is how I would categorize them, as a race of Necroids.

I mean taking the Flood Concept and transferring it to a Fantasy setting it would be like saying "We have a Necromancer who creates zombies and he gets smarter with each zombie he creates." You could argue the Necromancer isn't a zombie, but what he's creating definitely are zombies. Having complete control over the zombie hoard it created doesn't make the minions any less of zombies. I definitely understand Wow Such Gaming's mindset, but it feels more like an issue of when some, but not all Sci Fi settings try to introduce zombies. Now that future tech is involved and aliens they overcomplicate it to avoid just saying "Its a zombie" but at its core most still are zombies just with extra steps.

As weird as it may sound, he is actually right. I don't say I agree with this but in reality, the rage zombies are not zombies. This is because the rage zombies (28 days & 28 weeks later) are not dead. Zombies technically are reanimated corpses, that is why in the walking dead infected people die first and then reanimate into the "living dead". In the 28 movies, it is a virus that infects living organisms and spreads through saliva and other bodily fluids. Although they attack and bite non infected to spread the infection, it is not really reanimating the dead nor is it feeding on human flesh. Just really aggressive sick people. I could be wrong but please fact check me on this. I don't remember seeing anyone in the 28 movies dying first and then reanimating into a zombie, and I also don't remember seeing "zombies" in the 28 movies feeding on a human instead of just viciously attacking /infecting the body and then moving on.

I would say a big issue with the "not a zombie" argument is that movies like return of the living dead show zombies being still intelligent and able to come up with some ideas. It's not a large leap to imagine a zombie could pull off the halo stuff when you remember what the forefathers of zombie horror said they can do.

the way i see it tradition is peer pressure from dead people, as long as it has the scary parts of a zombie then I'll consider it a zombie variant( i also accept it if the characters call it a zombie in shows such as Zombie land saga) the parts of a zombie i find scary are *a friend can forcefully turn into a monster *if you are infected your choice is death or become a monster *the mental trauma of being forced to kill or be killed even when the zombies are former friends * the dread of rather or not a cure exist and the repercussions of such a cure ( i wish more zombie stories had this) the flood falls under enough of these that i would consider em a zombie the hive mind aspect just makes em intelligent zombies in my opinion

So, I did think necromorphs could be considered zombies (just ‘mutated’ and given a purpose by a higher being), kinda like the flood, right? Though, I don’t think most of the flood would count as zombies. The basic combat forms (sanghili, human, etc.) could be considered zombie-like, somewhat like in the Last of Us. Though, pureforms and anything like it aren’t zombies, included the spores and infection forms (since I see them more as the method of making people and corpses into zombies) At the point where they get more advanced and become closer to the pure forms, they’re less zombie and more lovecraftianish like the brethren moons (who even though are made of entire planets worth of corpses feel different from the necromorphs fought throughout the game). Though, that’s just how I feel comfortable categorizing them all.

The only thing really about them I could say are zombies is combat forms. Especially in the expanded lore they seem closer to *The Thing* (in the whole body horror aspect, as it literally takes over all your cells one by one to its own, allowing it to mutate you to fit the situation like the creature in The Thing) but way smarter than they do to normal zombies. Closer to an Eldritch horror or Lovecraftian horror, especially the closer and closer it gets to it's end goals, considering they can mess with space time and other various physics or logic breaking thing.

It's more the idea of the zombie, the flood isn't a zombie, but the infected ... they're, zombie like, to me. Because they are reanimated corpses that attack non-infected individuals to add them, or their matter, to their army, kinda like zombies that attack every other human to satisfy their endless hunger and adding more numbers to their army. So in a way the flood, as a hole now, they fulfill the criteria of a creature that wants to satisfy a "never-ending hunger", but the infected fulfill that criteria more because of the comig back from the dead thing.

Weapon effectiveness doesn't really translate to a good argument for if the flood counts as zombies. Pretty sure setting anything on fire would probably eliminate the threat. And depending on what kind of zombies we are dealing with, guns have variable effects. Not to mention the Flood is described in several instances as a Parasite. A creature as opposed to reanimation or illness.

So I played a DND adjacent game with my buddies a while back. It was a Mashup of Halo, Star Wars, Titanfall, and some others. I got to play the flood. I started off as a proto gravemind, and was able to create new forms as I saw fit, as long as I rolled well. I made a supercell like in the Thing, managed to infect a couple Elites on a covenant pleasure world, moved them to the highest mountain on the planet and waited for one of the violent storms that took place on this planet, then I detonated my supercell forms down to single celled individuals. I was able to infect the planet almost over night. I then kept it quiet and infected the ships coming in to drop troops off or refuel and basically absorbed 75 percent of the covenant within a month. I would have won that game if I hadn't have felt it was cheating and made some purposefully stupid mo es

I mean utilizing the "cheese" early on to get a good foothold is fair, popping up sporadically over their empires is also immersive but after a certain point I'd honor rule that I couldn't be overly sneaky like the storm spore trick you did, maybe make a new rule that every "turn" a faction fights you the easier they can detect you or roll at a bigger and bigger disadvantage on "stealth" checks however the GM decides to balance it

Zombies typically do not need food to survive, the flood is unique in the fact that it can be starved to death (just like a parasite), which is why HALO is a weapon to kill the floods food, not the flood itself.

(Parasite, virus, bacteria, fungus, ect ect) 3: Do the reanimated ignore each other to attack and infect other living creatures? Instinctual answer is no. The sentience of the flood gave me that answer. I recall a video game series that was covered where the zombie virus led to people becoming globs of biomass that eventually become sentient. So that isn't necessarily a solid counter argument. Personally, I see the flood as a parasite more than an infection. I do not know if that makes sense, because they are an entirely different species taking control of another's body. I do recall seeing some series discussed where people have argued that parasitic control isn't necessarily being a zombie. I think this channel has tried to make that distinction several times. So strictly because I see the flood as parasites that propagate and spread quickly, I don't consider them as zombies. It's just a sentient spore-parasite that is really good at hijacking biomass.

When I saw the Starfish Lord in Suicide Squad it reminded me of the Flood. not quit infected not quit zombie but definitely an entity that controls and multiplies with a hivemind. Also see X-men's Phalanx brood, or Star Trek's Borg's. they also infect and control with a hive mind. not quit zombie but something else all together.

So I'm a huge halo fan and I'm tossin my hat into the ring (lol). Paused at 0:44 and I'm gonna also answer the question, just to compare notes. Are the Flood zombies? Welllllll the answer is somewhere between "no" and "it depends on your definition of zombie"... but mostly "no" Basically the flood infection forms (the lil' popcorn flood) are just a convenient means to accelerated infection (eg. Halo 3, marines turn to flood in seconds). They infect by tapping into the spinal cord, isolating the brain, and taking direct control over the body. As soon as any contact with flood biomass takes place a secondary method of infection starts: the super cell The flood super cell can mimic the form and function of almost any host cell (but no photosynthesis...?), and it's pretty well established lore that infection is on a cellular level and absolutely complete. Realistically the flood only maintain a human-ish shape out of convenience. In short, you could call them zombies... but only with a particular loose definition of "zombie". The only box the flood sorta tick is "living dead", but definitely not by such a loose definition. It'd be more accurate to think of it as a new life form in the same shape as the dead body.

They are zombies, virus/mutant/infecting zombies are only one faction, you have magic zombies raised from the dead that only turn those they kill, a bite won't "infect" you it might poison you causing death for the magic to then turn much like necromorphs. So overall zombies is a broad term where a host body is contolled by another entity/force or mindlessly set on autopilot moving on instinct with little to no intellect/resistance if host body is still alive.

Zombie Definition: A zombie is a mythological undead corporeal revenant created through the reanimation of a corpse. The Flood can do the things that zombies can do, but also things they can't do. For example, they don't need to revive a corpse when they can just take control of the host alive. In a way, it's basically complete mind control. They can choose to either control their minds while they're alive, or control their bodies after they're dead - it's just much easier for them to control their dead bodies. I think of it like this: Flood Infection Forms are unintellectual puppeteers whose purpose are to create a mastermind, a Gravemind, to provide them with the knowledge and tactics of other beings with the sole purpose of expanding their race throughout the whole universe, if not, the multiverse. So with this in mind, my conclusion is that the Flood are basically a race of Nerval Puppeteers, and not zombies.

To say that the flood is more violent or dangerous than the necromorphs would be wrong but understandable, as most people haven't read the lore of deadspace and even less have actually understood it. The necromorphs can't really be defeated and are way to adaptive to not always stay on top.
