Lyrics:
I get undertones of sadness
When I think about the moments
That I never got to spend with you.
I can’t decide
If I love you more in morning
Or I love you more in night.
with its luminous lux tides
maybe, in the daylight
All it’s pretty madness
and the complicated status
Cause the moon don’t pick sides
And the sun won’t resign
Until you’re by my side
Because
The longing leads to leaving
And the loving leads to bleeding
And your beauty is a blessing
And I never got to tell you
how
I love the way
my eyes make
yours look green too
I think we could live forever
In each others faces
Cause I’ll always see my youth in you
and if we don’t live forever
maybe one day we’ll trade places
darling you will bury me
Before I bury you
Before I bury you
I’ll never know,
if there’s danger in confession
or it’s memory that presses
like a blade against my throat
another word and I could choke
but what’s worse?;
Telling you my feelings
Or to die without revealing
That you crawled inside my head
And set a fire there instead
Of letting all my insecurity
Devour me with certainty
that love is just a currency.
so take my pockets
Take me whole
Take my life and take my soul
wrap me in a wedding ring
You know,
I swear I’d give you anything
I think we could live forever
In each other’s faces
Cause I’ll always see my youth in you
and if we don’t live forever
maybe one day we’ll trade places
darling you will bury me
Before I bury you
Before I bury you

Ya'aburnee, It’s Arabic ( syrian - lebanese) and it means “A declaration of one's hope that they'll die before another person because of how unbearable it would be to live without them.”

I love that she referred to this word we have in Arabic. We don’t realize it as usually it’s our mom and grandma or auntie that keep saying it to you when ur little. Ye’berni or يأبرني … the connotation and the sadness there is in this word. When we think about it it’s because of all the trauma we have and the wars that happened, so a lot of mother saw their child being killed, so in a way ye’berni is like I hope you will burry me and that I won’t have to burry you 💔

Yes, it goes even way beyond the paltry overused word “Masterpiece”….it’s a fucking milestone…a game changer…you got a successful pop star who focused her passion on fulfilling her dream to work with Industrial Goth Rock Legends: Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross. The result is the greatest album of her career and they may even continue to work together…many hope they do…But my real concern is whether you clueless Halsey fans even appreciate the magnitude of this collaboration…and how it affects the mainstream pop music world….the Grammys is riddled with bad HipHop & RnB and even crappy pop like U2, Aerosmith, Pitbull, JayZ, Kanye West, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Puff Daddy, Kiss, Motley Crue, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Guns & Roses, Maroon 5. Trent Reznor has finally achieved something that was long overdue: Make music with his cohorts that is everlasting: Visceral palpable haunting yet tranquil & even darkly heavy metallish….this is not the pop music you grew up on…but it will be the awesome pop music your freaking kids will grow up on…THANKS TRENT REZNOR & Ashley Halsey. Boom, you’ve been served 💎🪓

The fact that it’s about her child and her partner… ‘maybe one day we’ll trade places’ touches on reincarnation, and being tied to someone…at a soul level. 🥺 what its like to experience real love and all its willingness. Being willing to be vulnerable again…that pure love she’s been searching for - has been found in herself, for herself… through her child and her partner as mediums for that love. Her spiritual evolution and her self awareness in this album is stupendous. definitely a favorite.

The music is so minimalist and perfect…this is a display of sheer genius…Trent can hammer the fuck out of guitars and synths and any fucking instrument he puts his gorgeous hands on…but for Ashley he knows exactly how to tone it down and find the perfect sonic aesthetic for her to lay down her breathtaking voice and timeless lyrics. Special shout out to Atticus…he’s got amazing skills that’s more architectural but he can play the fuck out of a piano & synths too…these guys know how to be quite & stir up some jaw dropping moments of sound art that has enchanted the Godforsaken world….it is morally imperative that this divine creature HALSEY stay with my NIN Boys….they formed a TRIO that is potentially the greatest team in music right now & have innovated/pioneered so much together.

Truthfully I have never listened to much Halsey - not dislike, just never got into. I added the album to my library on Apple Music on a whim after seeing it on a lot of lists for the top 10 albums of 2021 (and then learned the brilliant Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross collaborated on this). I am honestly floored. This is such a beautiful, powerful piece of art and this song in particular is stunning. I genuinely am excited to start going through more of her discography in a way I haven’t been with an artist in quite some time.

"And If We Don't Live Forever Maybe One Day, We'll Trade Places Darling, You Will Bury Me Before I Bury You" This right here so heartbreaking. It reminds me of an anime series i watched named Mononoke. The first short story is abt a women on the run trying to protect her child in her womb from ppl who were trying to hurt her child. During her run she spends a night at a hotel. However the room she stays in turns out to be not a normal one. She starts to hear voice of kids in the room, see little children in that room. Later she finds out that the hotel she stayed in was formerly a brothel, and the room she was in was the place where women of the brothel gave birth to childrens which were killed right after birth. The voices she heard were the voices of children's who were never truly born, who wanted to be with their mother and thus haunted the place. The children then asks her to be their mother and she agrees. Then we see a scene where she has one last conversation with her own child whom she will have to sacrifice in order to be mother to the other kids, and this is what her child's soul says: *"I'm glad it was her, I'm sorry I had to hurt you so, Thank you for always trying your best.* *Thank you for talking to me so much.* *I love you.* *I love you. I love you"* And she replies: *"You're welcome. Thank you for choosing me, for coming to me.* *I am sorry I couldn't be your mother.* *We couldn't be together"* These lines felt so much similar to what Halsey wrote in her lyrics.

I always remember my mother with this song. It hits so hard "You'll bury me before I bury you" I couldn't imagine a world without her, but I don't think it will be better if she is still in this world and I am not. You know that time will come eventually, so that's why it hits so hard. Love you mom.
