One of my favorites. I served in the army years ago, but never once got the chance to eat S.O.S. That was the BIGGEST reason why I joined, and not one mess hall ever served it in the 8 years I was in. I was cheated out of the experience. I make it often now and love it.

Grandmother and my mom used to make this quite often when I was growing up I absolutely loved it I loved it over just about anything even just over a piece of bread but when I mentioned it to my friends at school nobody had any idea of what I was talking about apparently their parents didn't know how to cook sometimes now when I make it myself I take it one step further and add some chopped up mushrooms and have it over egg noodles this recipe so versatile you could dress it up or just keep it simple and no matter which way it's absolutely yummy

I have a recipe for chow mein with ground beef from my mother-in-law. She was a school cook for many years and passed it down to me. It has a hamburger gravy base with celery onion, kitchen bouquet and soy sauce. I added a canned chicken chow mein with a separate can attached for the bean sprouts and water chestnuts and other veggies as a variation of the original recipe. Anyone else have a recipe similar to my variation of hamburger gravy chow mein?😊

Great recipe and video. I can't wait to try it. Though ... sigh, I have to make one correction: Worcestershire is pronounced "Wooster-sheer" or "Worster-sheer". No "Shire". My preference would be to saute the onions first and they throw in the ground beef, but no matter, it all comes out GOOD! Thanks!

In the Army we called it "SOS." I also started life out as an Army brat and grew up eating it. My Uncle Edward was an Army cook for 23 years and cooked for the Army another 20 years as a civilian and when on active duty he won a couple of contests for his. I don't know if I liked his or my grandmother's more and she also cooked for a living. Mine isn't too bad either. I like mine over toast as opposed to biscuits with grits and eggs.

@@thesauceandgravychannel, a touch of salt, heavy on the black pepper, garlic. I don't like the taste of onions so it's light on them as well. I am from Fairmont, West Virginia. Where are you from? My favorite comfort food IS actually hamburger gravy & biscuits..., but this recipe doesn't quite fit my idea of "cost conservational" ( I think that's what you called it?) or my Nanny's recipe for hamburger gravy. Yours has more ingredients, so it's not quite as cheap as what I grew up eating. I still make it for my family & my own grandchildren. It's only 5 ingredients: Hamburger, flour, milk, salt & pepper, thesame way Grandma made it when Nanny was little. No onion or fancy add- ins...she used about 1/4 pound of what she called "scrambled" hamburger. She broke it down pretty small, with a few bigger pieces here and there & seasoned it a little part way through. Then she added enough flour and milk to make a big skillet of gravy & would taste it to see if it needed more salt or pepper. I enjoyed watching you make your version & look forward to seeing more videos. Stay Blessed 💘

To make this keto just leave out the flour and milk, and adjust the cream to get the desired consistency. It'll be a tad thinner, but cooking it down a little longer will thicken it up enough. Also, to add flavor you can cook the beef until it browns up more, and toss in a clove or two of garlic a minute or two before adding the liquids. This really is a quick and easy recipe, total time is around 20 minutes.
