i was SO taken by surprise to see this upload but SO INCREDIBLY HAPPY. the cut to you sobbing on the couch with your arms crossed is so funny i almost peed. in my opinion phoebe is one of the best songwriters of our generation and i don’t think she gets enough credit. don’t get me wrong, she gets credit, but not enough. she has an effortless talent of portraying imagery for her songs through words and she always makes you feel harder than you expect in a uncomfortable but comfortable way. i love everything she’s ever put out. love your reactions - they’re always the perfect mix of humor and genuine thought/review. and your editing is always top notch. side note - i hope we have a new billie album reaction coming 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 it’s SO good dude.

also I noticed that smoke signals annotation on genius is kinda silly lol. Yes art is open to interpretation but why were they mentioning mythology and etymology of pelicans lol. Phoebe is the type of writer to give you a situation, then use a bunch of descriptive language to paint a picture. She is comparing this lost lover looking for her to a person lost on an island throwing smoke signals in hopes of finding a saviour lol.

Funeral is one of my go to songs when I feel a deep sadness/the need to cry, but I can't access those emotions easily by myself so I put on music to help me release them, funeral brings tears to my eyes 9 out of 10 times. So devastating. I love it

"Coming up lavender" is referencing her favorite songwriter's song "Coming Up Roses" by Elliott Smith. And when you bury A hatchet, it means, two or more people in a fight have made peace. But she sings "I buried THE hatchet", and lavender, in the language of flowers, means distrust. So "coming up roses" would be a good thing. "coming up lavender" is not. I feel like she's finishing the song explaining there's really no closure in the relationship. And, by the way, the "growling" you hear when Bowie is mentioned is actually a sample from his song "Moss Garden", in the album "Heroes". It's actually the sound of a rocketship.

Smoke Signals to me reads a lot like punisher, like someone must have been talking to her directly because she relates so much. You are anonymous because you don't really know me. All the literary references too

You and Chase Carneson are my absolute fave reactors to music because it’s always without a doubt empathetic af and you both go so deep with how the lyrics and music impact you.
