I would also set the button to kill (or toggle) the spotlight, and activate a parented entity to dull the lit appearance of the model (func_dustcloud maybe?). But then again, this is a tutorial for a ball socket.

I don't get this. well I do, but I can't get it to work. I'm trying on L4D2 and doing the EXACT same thing as you are. Tried using different kinds of entities. Any chance that you ever did some l4d mapping ?

Parent a light_dynamic with a low brightness of about 8-15 to the light model. A lot better than just a point_spotlight.

I can't get it to stick to the ceiling. it just spawns at the floor..

i don't know why, but it doesn't work in my css. I've tried to remove ballsocket and leave only prop_physics with the same model but it doesn't appear on the map
