Honestly the art style of the JoJo OVA is kinda weird. Ignoring the very heavy and clearly 90s early computer animation they try to make the art style seem both realistic while at the same faithful to the source material. All of the characters and stands which appear look exactly like they do in the manga and all of the goofy mannerisms stay the same aswell meanwhile the world around seems much more based in our reality than anything in JoJo with the realistic looking people and environments. It's a weird juxtaposition seeing a French guy with the biggest crop top ever, heart shaped earrings, muscles to rival Arnold Schwarzenegger, and 7 feet tall walking through a crowd of ordinary looking people in a Pakistani town that looks like it actually is a real place (technically it is but ya know what I mean)

In fairness they were only able to make the OVA a certain length, so things needed cutting out and changing for the plot to still be coherent and consistent. Along with being consistent narratively, it's clear they were trying to be consistent tonally as well seeing as the OVA is pretty serious throughout. As much as I like the Oingo/Hol Horse & Boingo encounters, they wouldn't have fit with the tone of the OVA. Not to mention with them having to keep it to a certain length, having those fights in there would mean they would have to drop two of the fights they actually included. The plot in the OVA is at least coherent (if very untrue to the source material) and I think "which encounters can we alter to help keep the plot coherent" was probably partially why they picked the stand users they picked to put in the OVA. I don't see how they could have gotten either of the Boingo encounters in there without the plot becoming a bit of a hard to follow mess. As inferior as it is to the source material, the plot in the OVA is at least still easy to understand for somebody who hasn't read the source material, something a good adaptation should do.

@manuelmateo33925 жыл бұрын
@Chandler Broderick The manga definitely makes the waves of goons with little change aside from backdrop more palatable. When I first saw the SC anime (after having read and re-read the scanlations years before it started, starting from the piss yellow ones to the updated ones), I was pretty disappointed that they were dragging it out so long, just like how I was miffed that DP cut PB so short (which I had read back to front multiple times before then). DP does excellent work, and their respect for Jojo and Araki's vision is apparent, but they're not perfect. They help pick up after the things Araki screws up, but they screw up themselves. DP leaves in too much, and APPP leaves in too little. To me, the best way to experience SC is the manga, but I wouldn't dissuade someone from watching the anime if they chose to.

Well, the animation in the OVA is beautiful (specially in the 1993 ova) but they cut lots of characters and story from the original source, also the humor and tone are more serious or darker (you will not get those funny moments with Joseph or Polnareff) but the action is brutal. With this, i still prefer the 2015 version. The music, and the way that David Pro is still handle the JOJO Manga until now it's perfect

@@swf_buccellati2098 As I explained in previous comments: Part 3 kinda has some tonal issues and stuff that could be trimmed without much concern. The OVA does fix that (even if I'd have added 4 more episodes to it...) for the most part and has more of a Phantom Blood tone overall. As for David Pro they do improve for Part 4 and 5 (like the build up for Kira and the added moments with the execution squad and GioGio...) even if they still are too literal when it comes to dialogue and exposition (Lord do I hate the narrator !). Just my 2 cents.
@swf_buccellati20984 жыл бұрын
saidi7975 yeah I get what you mean. Personally, the tone for David Pro’s adaptation isn’t an issue, as they adapted almost everything from the manga, while the OVA left out many fights, leaving mostly the more serious ones. For me, my major issue with the new part 3 adaptation is how it’s split up into two seasons, making it 48 episodes long. That’s pretty unnecessary for this part. But yeah, I agree with you on parts 4 and 5 having better adaptations than part 3 did. Don’t know what’s your deal with the narrator though, I feel like he speaks less and less with each part... but it’s whatever
@thebarawy4 жыл бұрын
I really like the OVA as its own entity for the following reasons: 1) It gives off an extremely nostalgic feeling with all the retro music. 2) It's kind of dark, melancholic and not so generous in the comedy department as DP's anime (which I love more btw), and so the OVA is unlike the modern Jojo anime, but in a nice way. 3) I'm Egyptian and the amount of detail included in the animation of the streets and rooftops of 1980s downtown Cairo, heck, even the 7 up and Coca Cola signs, is all accurate to an extent. Even the scene where Dio was in the tram, the people were speaking Arabic in the Egyptian accent. It's not as bad as you think even with most of the arcs completely removed and the remaining ones changed drastically! 😅

I'd really recommend people watching it for the different take on Dio' timestop. In Stardust Crusaders, it has this amazing 'zhoom' sound. But in the OVA, inside time-stop has different sounds and speech sounds 'weird'. It creates a REALLY menacing environment, which I personally think is better than in Stardust Crusaders.
@neoqwerty4 жыл бұрын
I think the best way to represent time stop is a combo of the BBBBBVVVVPPPPTT and gears clicking to a stop, and then the "stilled time" speech getting tinny and distorted (after all, sound is air moving, of course speaking in stopped time will sound distorted!). Having one without the other makes it sound like it's missing that tiny extra push into "this is not normal stand fight".
@HollowPurple-if2co3 жыл бұрын
Also Dio's time stop sound is iconic and is almost unanimous with time stops, at least in a anime
@Sqk.3 жыл бұрын
The time stop voice is literally just DIO speaking into a water bottle. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the OVA, but time stop voice is ...not really something i enjoy so much. But, his voice actually changing sure is.
@nivyan3 жыл бұрын
@@Sqk. You could make the same point about literally any voice with some overlay. Like Darth Vader sounds like he's talking into a can - but that doesn't change the fact it was amazing. DIO' voice in the OVA makes logical sense and sounds like he's in a different plane altogether. Like, that's mine and your opinion - but I feel that the dub did it *soooo much worse* Mercer is a fantastic voice actor, but him referencing McCree multiple times and even saying "its high noon" during Jotaro vs DIO' final moments - completely ruins the experience for me. The entire point of voice-acting is to give life to a character, and his lines were self-references. Like their stand rushes sounds super awkward, because they just don't care about the original author' intention. It's been like this for decades - even in DBZ, they changed Goku dramatically. So when super came around, everyone in the west was like "omg goku is a retard" - no, the dub made him completely different. For example, when Goku was trying to convince Vegeta to use the potaro earrings against Super Buu, he originally says something along the lines of "everyone is already dead" and we get the flashback of events; implying Goku is telling him the details. In the dub, Goku goes on a completely out of character monologue about their legacy as saiyans and trying to convince him with emotional baggage: And Vegeta fucking responds positively - Vegeta hasn't completely changed after he sacrificed himself, it's a process. That's why it was still a plot-point in super. Sorry about the tangent, I just *really* despise most dubs - they have no respect for the original author and kind of abuse their right to dub it and completely change multiple plot points. When they change enough, it's literally fan fiction.
@Sqk.3 жыл бұрын

I really liked how they depicted the emerald splash attack in this OVA. It looks like a machine gun, with emeralds obliterating anything they strike. It looks like a genuinely dangerous ranged attack, much more menacing than the anime where its destructive power is rarely shown.
@neoqwerty11 ай бұрын
Also from the OVA, in the 2000 episode group spanning the first half, they showed that Hierophant's tentacles are lined with little emerald "teeth" like a chainsaw, and that's why the Stand is so dangerous to yank out of people or to get "slapped" by it. I very much like the idea of Hierophant Green being chainsaw ropes, tripwire shotgun blasts and machine gun fire, all of it with emerald-like shards and fragments.

There's a few things I like from the OVA. The animation for a start is largely quite good, even if at times untrue to the source. It's a lot more fluid and less stiff than the recent anime which nails the aesthetic style of Jojo but is pretty stiff a majority of the time. I guess that's the difference between an OVA and series budget though. In terms of changes and additions, again, some of them are quite good actually, at least the additions (I more just accept the changes with it having to cut content to fit the run time). I would have liked if rather than totally ignoring the existence of the OVA, the recent anime took some of the scenes added in it and recreated them, AT LEAST the ones that don't actually effect the plot in any significant way. More specifically I'm referring to the scenes such as the Geb/N'duhl fight with the added glove and Polnareff on the boxes, or the Dio fight with throwing boats, spires and Dio's slapping people in half. I feel stuff like that only added to the encounters and they were actually some neat additions that very easily could have been in the source material. I can't remember if it's in the manga (been a while since I read it) hence why I'm listing these separately, but there's also three scenes in the Dio fight that I liked from the OVA. - One is Jotaro getting punched by the World with Dio and Jotaro questioning how he isn't dead from it, only then to show Star Platinum subconciously blocking the blows. It adds a little more to Jotaro slowly learning to use time stop as well as reminding us Jotaro is kinda a normal guy who shouldn't be able to take a hit from Dio. In the manga and anime Jotaro does kinda become superhuman in this fight whereas this one little scene can help justify it as Star Platinum taking any 'lethal blows'. - I can't remember where in the encounter it happens, but it shows Jotaro strapping books under his shirt to splint his broken ribs. It makes the later classic scene of Jotaro getting stabbed with all the knives and falling from the sky is a lot less bullshit...Yano, where originally he just randomly has books strapped to himself for no reason. - Dio showing off his powers early in the encounter (I think before the Worlds power is revealed). He's just teleporting around. There's no sound effect or flashy presentation, he just keeps appearing in different places in the scene. It's nice and creepy. Oh, and Jotaro coming out of the still flames of the oil tanker, time resuming with the flames suddenly making his jacket blow around in the wind. It just looks fucking cool. I would never replace the road roller, I just had to say this bit was really neat.
@manuelmateo33925 жыл бұрын
Jotaro using Star Platinum to block is something he does several times in the manga and anime, so it isn't much different from the OVA. In fact, in both the anime and manga, Jotaro gets his guard intercepted by The World once. The OVA just frames it with SP protecting Jotaro whike time is stopped. Jotaro attaching wooden planks to him by the pool is completely original, and he also spends that time mulling over just what can DIO's Stand do, and how he can fight it. As for the books, Jotaro supposedly attached them underneath his clothes while DIO was recovering from his impairment by SP. The teleportation happens also in the anime and manga, but it's less suspenseful.

One cool change I noticed in the Part 3 adaptation by David Production was changing it so the bird on Dio’s shoulder was Pet Shop. It’s a nice touch I didn’t notice until I read the manga. (I’m guessing this is already in your part3 differences video but it’s still pretty cool).

I love the OVA, maybe even more than the anime. It has this gravity that makes everything feel real and gritty. The Jotaro/Dio fight especially feels like how a fight between two superhumans in the middle of a city would be, collateral damage and all. If a live action adaptation would ever be attempted I would hope they take inspiration from the OVA.
