In this video, Maryke explains what happens inside your muscle when you strain or tear a hamstring, how the body repairs and heals a hamstring strain, and how to use your knowledge of this healing process to design the optimal treatment plan. She also discusses why using anti-inflammatory drugs is not a good idea when you have a hamstring strain.

Great channel! I found you by this video. Last Thursday I strained my left hamstring on a 15 mile run 9 miles in so had to take it easy for a few miles then was able to run a bit better without too much pain It didn't bother me on the bike 2 days later in fact I rode 76 miles on Sunday and had only minor sensitivity so decided to give it a go today and after 2.3 miles the sort of stinging pain came back now feels pulled again but was able to run on it after an easy couple miles. I love your examples! Makes things easier to understand. Thank you

I have a strain that has affected me for over 18 months now. I stretched and over worked it for over a year, before I started treating it right. The pain is much less than before, but still make it difficult to sleep early in the morning. I am a commercial Fisherman, in great shape otherwise. I had a severe hamstring tear. My entire posterior leg was black. I’m so happy my MD sent me to PT instead of a surgeon. It was a months long recovery, but that’s in the past now. Wrapping the leg helped the pain tremendously, but I’m not sure if that was a good intervention. Boy did it hurt when I removed the wrap!

MNP don’t be surprised if it takes 6 months or more. I pulled mine at 43-44 years of age the first time like yours black from my butt down and again at 60. The same leg but this time even with PT it still took 6 months and it’s always threatening me at night 6-7 years later. Could be my age hamstring my recovery! 🤣🥴

The worse part of this is the awful nerve pain behind my knees and along both legs. Gets worse walking and as day progresses. Im actuvely working but role consist of seated office work, I am walking a bit. Havent started PT or strength training. Honestly a bit afraid. The best thing you can do is be honest with the PT you see and tell them that you are worried and a bit afraid. If you feel that they don't listen to you, look for a different one. The one you work with should choose exercises that suit you and go at a pace that make you feel safe and comfortable.

Great explanation. I made the mistake of sprinting a few hours after doing a couple of sets of squats, deadlifts, and lunges. I developed a small tweak on my left hamstring. I pushed through my sprint, then ended the workout. I'm hoping to heal partially within a few days using IFT to speed the healing process. Then I'll switch to longer sprints (800m) to lower my intensity level while still getting relevant training.

So useful - Im recovering from a partial hamstring tear from running and only been able to stretch after 2 months - i also get sciatic pain as I think the inflamed muscle must be pressing on the nerve as i get that burning sensation on the outside of the thigh Ive been walking lots which really helps and now about to start cycling.
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the same action that injures the hamstring can also injure the nerve at the same time. I discussed sciatic type pain in this video that is more comprehensive: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKbTl5ipn9CWfdU But it sounds as if you've doing a good job so far.

I had an acl reconstruction 2009 and hamstring graft. The surgeon said that i must exercise to strengthen the muscles, which i did. In 2020 i started taking medication for a different ailment and all of a sudden i had to stop training and doing HIIT because coffee and water was making me have anaphylaxis, then severe joint and muscle pain. By being immobile and not training, the hamstring became weak again and started to hurt after an anaphylaxis attack. I now keep having pain after every anaphylaxis. My physio said the acl was fine, but i need to strengthen the hamstring as it is very weak. Everytime i do leg curls, it seems to strain the muscle and i need to recover. This explains what the surgeon told me regarding keep training the muscle 🤔

Great explanation. I got a high grade 1/low,grade 2 strain while doing a 5K but it had been brewing for a while. I can’t seem to figure out my PT right now as I add more and it feels wonky and then I dial it back and I feel like I am not making as much progress as I would like. Thankfully mine is mid muscle so I hear that heals quicker. I teach tennis so it’s hard to stay off the injury.

Great Video! really well explained, I injured mine when Running, felt my glutes and Hamstring start to ache and then they went hot, I felt only what could be described as a twinge/cramp. and then came the pain. If I walk I don't feel much pain. It started being sore in the middle of the Hamstring if I try and run. What do you suggest, rest for a few days and start the remodelling phase? also, are Ginger and Heat packs OK to use on the Hamstring?
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
Heat is not great for fresh strains but if yours happened more than 5 days ago you can use it - it won't speed up healing but may help with pain management. I can't comment on ginger. Yes, you should be ready to start some gentle rehab. If you wanted help with your rehab and an exercise plan, this is something that our team of physios can assess and help you with via video call. So I’m not sure what I have got. I was doing single leg step ups which were flute focused (loading through the heels as opposed the toes) and then oddly I have pain now when kneel, or if I’m on all fours and I back up (flexion of hamstrings), or putting socks on even, I get a sharp pain in the lower part of my hamstring right around the insertion point of the back of the knee. If I stretch through it, my tight quads become the focus and that’s where the pain is localised. But it’s really weird how it’s not healed in over a couple of months. I can perform single leg bridges with no pain whatsoever. I can perform knee rotations both internal and external rotation and no pain. I can lay on my front and perform a weightless hamstring curl, no issues. But if I kneel close to full flexion I get a gunshot style pain deep in the hamstring and then it goes. But why? I can sprint, no problems. I don’t limp around, but something causes a twang sensation. Anyone got any ideas?

Hi there, my question: I play soccer and I had this sharp pain back in my hamstring. But normally if I have hamstring injuries I always get this in the middle of the hamstring but not this time. This time I have it little bit to low side. And I feel this bump when I touch it. I can feel it. Is this different kind of injury or is it still the hamstring? I had it almost 5 weeks ago and I still can’t run or do anything. Do I need to see a medical doctor?

There is definitely a strong argument to include lengthening type exercises in hamstring rehab but I haven't found that specific set of exercises fit so well with a lot of my regular patients who aren't to level athletes. So I tend to mix and match and go with what seems to fit the patient but try to include exercises that emphasize eccentric action. Sliders are difficult to do properly if you don't have a suitable surface.

@@SportsInjuryPhysio thank you very much for clarifying it. I was advancing with regular exercises but somehow I have torn it again, so just looking for some alternative and relatively safer ones! I don't know if they really work but the Askling is going fine for now.

Yes, the word strain can mean anything from a very small tear to a large tear. So depending on how severe the strain was, it can take very long to get full strength back.

I didn’t realize I strained my hamstring because I thought I was just sore from deadlifting but then my right leg healed and my left leg didn’t. It wasn’t too noticeable unless I tried to deadlift or do the splits. Now it’s been months and it’s still irritated during those two exercises. I haven’t done any rehab until today. Is there hope?

Thought on Tiger balm or Voltaren application on the strain? i strained my inner thigh/hamstring around 5days ago and i went to the ER on the 4th day due to the immense pain, i was able to walk through pain and even go to the gym (not doing legs but just upper body and some Cycling to help with bloodflow, probably went a bit too hard on that), the Doctor told me that i was a tear in the hamstring and that this feeling of burning running down the leg was pretty much normal. i have some big spots behind the leg aswell and swelling (which seems to be the most hurtful part). Do you know if the swelling may be the thing that is causing that much pain when i try to move my leg from a resting position to another or is it the actual tear, and should i apply heat/ice at all?
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
It will be the tear that is causing most of your pain when moving it - your injury is still very new and will start to feel better as it heals. Massaging very gently with tiger balm may help for pain but be careful not to be too aggressive as it can make it feel worse. Stay away from voltaren - it is an anti-inflammatory gel and there is evidence that using anti-inflammatories during the early stage of muscle tear healing can negatively impact the injury. @@SportsInjuryPhysio Wow thank you alot for the advices! indeed i can attest that since starting the application of Voltaren my condition did not get better, it has gotten worse, i will opt for the tiger balm instead and lightly massage the sore area while trying to rest.

I see where I made a mistake. I could walk, light jog, and run after 2 weeks of a hamstring pull. I played today and after exerting myself a tad too much, I felt another pull in the same area. Guess I need a solid month before returning to any sports...

I tore my hamstring ( age 15 ) whilst doing Taekwondo ( I was off my feet for ages ) at the age of 48 I’ve taken Taekwondo back up again ( but certain kicks I find quite uncomfortable) I stretch regularly and always get to class early so I can warm up properly, but certain kicks ( like side kicks and back kicks ) I really feel the pull on the hamstring, is there any way to strengthen it or make it more flexible?

Yes, the best way to do this is usually through strength training that work the muscle in a similar way to the movements that cause trouble. My colleague Kevin is experienced in rehab for Martial arts so if you wanted help figuring this out and a rehab plan, this is something he can do via video call. Hi Maryke, i am not a sports person. I have a desk job. Feel deep ache behind my knee where we fold. I also feel some achiness little bit up in my hamstring but not very higher. It is low hamstring i believe. If i massage with ball it feels good but i feel the ache most of the time and it is very deep.No pain while walking or touching. My MRI found hamstring tendinopathy. How can i recover? Any good exercise i can follow? I have been doing double leg bridge, single leg bridge and food morning pose but not much help at this time.

The exercise advice for someone who does sports and someone who doesn't do sport is very similar except for the final stages of rehab. The key to getting this better is also understanding what has caused your case to help it recover. I can't really provide any useful advice other than what is in the video without assessing you because every person's situation is so different. I’m sorry if I missed it somewhere in the comments but how long after I strained it( minor strain) should I begin to start the rehab/stretching phase? Or working out the old scar tissue? It’s been 1 day since I felt the sharp strain in my hamstring.

I partially tore my hamstring five and a half months ago. It took about a month for me to be able to walk normally, and then for about 4 months the only exercise I really gave it was working construction. Now I’m doing strength training with it. How bad is it that I didn’t do intentional training with it for so long?
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio 2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have to be a problem - because you didn't just sit down. If you were doing construction, it would have gotten some movement which would have helped. Just take your time and strengthen it now. Our bodies are amazing at reacting to strength training and remodeling themselves.

Hi and thanks, I have heard some studies are now saying that stretching can actually lengthen the time of recovery? I got what felt like a mild tear like 3 weeks ago. I could walk and even jog lightly. I then started stretching as I was told. I still have pain and no confidence to sprint. The pain is on the inside of my right leg rather than down the dead centre. I did this playing tennis and sliding for a ball on clay. Any advice?

The most important treatment for this is strengthening exercises that slowly restores the strength in your injured hamstrings. You are correct - starting with stretches too early or overdoing them (stretching too hard or too long) can be counter productive. But gentle strengthening exercises can usually be introduces really early and then they must be progressively made more difficult as your hamstring recovers until they resemble the forces your hamstrings will have to tolerate during your sport. If you wanted help with your rehab and an exercise plan, this is something that our team of physios can assess and help you with via video call. Hey Doc, I had a hamstring injury (Didn't had idea what level it was) and I couldn't bend my knee for one day after that. I rested 1 week almost walking inside the house after I started walking and going to work. but didn't start running. After 3 weeks back I started playing cricket and the very first minute I felt the my injury is back (Yesterday). I had swelling but not like 3 weeks back but the pain is still there when I touch the hamstring. What do you suggest me to do Doc?
