I built this dovetailed liquor bottle box out of a scrap piece of 2x6 construction lumber left over from a recent home renovation project to give as a gift to a friend of mine who recently got engaged. I use power tools to mill the rough lumber, but use hand tools after that.
The box is designed to perfectly fit a bottle of Bombay Sapphire gin, serving as a sort of single-bottle liquor cabinet. The sliding lid is made of a scrap piece of 1/4 inch cherry veneer plywood, with a hand-carved handle made from a scrap piece of solid cherry.
The box took me a few days to make, and I finished it with a few coats of shellac, each coat successively thinner, with light sanding between coats. I used Titebond 3 glue in the joints, and to secure the handle to the sliding lid.

Beautiful work with pine dovetails. Nice. I like the Cosman method but haven’t tried yet. I learned watching Katz-Moses vids, so I’m sticking with that until I can buy a cosman saw. I saw someone mention a physics background? Cool seeing another scientist with a woodworking passion! I’m a bio PhD.

Great video as usual, Dave. I see you are using Rob's dovetail saw and his kerf knife. What is your opinion of using that kerf knife. Do you think it is worth the little extra time? Rob makes it look so easy (and you do also). You also use Japanese saws for your dovetails - which do you like better? I just can't get used to pull saws for dovetails, something in my DNA I guess. I'm waiting for Rob to finish up his small dovetail saw and I'll be first in line for it. Recently did some dovetails using 1/4" thick Walnut, and a smaller saw would have been nice I think.
@dkbuilds
@dkbuilds 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how I feel about the kerf knife honestly, I haven't gotten it to work as well as I want... I am still experimenting. I absolutely LOVE his dovetail saw though. Honestly I plan completely phase out all my Japanese saws for high quality western saws, but I can't afford it just yet. I can't really control a Japanese pull saw well, I only use it for cross cutting roughly now (which I always finish the edge to final length on a shooting board).
@DonsWoodies
@DonsWoodies 4 жыл бұрын
dk builds I figured as much about the dovetail saw. I have the Lie-Nielsen one and love it also. Maybe the only thing missing from it is the extra small teeth Rob’s has at the front. I’ll keep watching to see how you feel about that kerf knife as time goes on. I wonder if it would work with the LN one? Probably not much difference in the kerf the two produce.
@dkbuilds
@dkbuilds 4 жыл бұрын
@@DonsWoodies Yeah I'm not sure, you can definitely look up the exact kerf width (or e-mail Rob, he will let you know) to compare the two saws. If you watch some of the older videos of Rob when he is first experimenting with this technique, he actually uses the saw itself instead of a separate kerf knife... might not work as well, but it's something you could try. He grips the saw close to the front (by the blade) to do this, which probably isn't very dangerous because he is making only small/gentle kerf cuts.

@michaeldunn5280
@michaeldunn5280 4 жыл бұрын
August Hermann hello August. Now that you bring it up I def agree with two points you mention-riving knife and overhead cover however the stance is a stretch. Unfortunately the overhead cover is one of the first things that most woodworkers eliminate whenever setting up their saws. That does not make it right but that is the reality of the beast. Myself I always have the riving knife installed when making simple rip cuts All three of your points are well founded and useful reminders to the community and thank you for hi liting them Harleymike/chicago
