That screwdriver is drop dead gorgeous. It looks better than factory new. I have never gone coarser than 80 grit when sanding steel. I'm afraid I might overdo something and that if I do overdo it, I can't put the sanded steel back. Replacing the scales with new wood can be a tedious, not-always-succesful project, so the JB weld looks like a great solution. The stain is a perfect contrast to the steel. I do hope the JB adheres to the steel reliably. Great video. Thanks

In the past 20 years, the chemical/paint/epoxy industry has changed significantly. I'm now seeing carpenters use epoxies and automotive putties in their fields and other trades as well. It's safe to say your "idea" drives the manufacturing industry to put their chemists/engineers to work on new products as well. Your not afraid to use various materials (wood, metals, bonding agents) to create various projects; for that alone I salute you. You bring a small portion to the table today which is somewhat lacking...ingenuity.

This is awesome. Looks the cat’s pajamas and surely must have been a profitable experience in learning. I work for myself as a restorer/seller of antiques but also work part time in a retail store stockroom. I recently found a broken handle 100gm hammer in a box from India containing a cheaply made bench. The little hammer head made my day as it prompted me to do my very first hammer re-handle project. Most enjoyable AND profitable as the perfect need for this little 100 gram cross-peen riveting hammer presented itself to me just 2 weeks after completion of re-handling it. What I’m tying to say is, please never forget that what you present here, which on the surface seems like “just a quirky hobby”, is actually a most essential respite for our sanity and sense of worth in our silly work-a-day lives.

If you plant a tree seed under the screwdriver, and water it every day for 30 years, and train the tree with bonsai wire, you can, indeed, get a better fit. But those rock-and-rollers of today don't appreciate all the sacrifices we old folks used to make to repair busted tools. And NOBODY lubricates with whale oil anymore!!!

Even though you had a lot more this time around. Also, who needs a "Dake" for the type of work you do. Just Magdad muscle, a wrench & a cheater bar at times. Incredible! I love how it came out and I bet it far outlasts the original wood. I did something similar with the handles of a Benchmade Bone Collector and regular JB Weld. I found that the handle scales of the knife were extremely corse and made pulling it out of the pocket difficult, so I filled in all the serrations on the handles with JB Weld and sanded it down and it dried gray and the handles were black and it ended up with a cool pattern and a smooth feel to the hand. the regular JB might be even tougher than the Weld Wood, I don't know.

Very nice resto-mod. Well done. You did good with the stain. A challenge since the Kwikwood likely does not absorb the stain well. I just purchased two Perfect Handled screwdrivers at my first flea market visit of this year. One shows "Rieco" and Germany on the other side. It also has a bend in the shaft. Its scales are as beaten up as yours when you started. The other is 14 1/2in long and has Irwin and USA stamped on the shaft. The Irwin has no bends in the shaft but the scales have expanded over time so do not sit flush. I will have fun with my restorations. Dave.

Thanks for watching Brian! I'm not sure what the number means. My guess would be that it is a way for the factory to track what die was used.

You handled that perdfectly Magdad. Excellent idea. Also I am in love with the surface conditioning belts. Thanks for the referral.

I did some molding with the Kwikwood for Chuck's tiny toolbox project. I like the results, so I wanted to try it on a larger project.

@@357magdad I recently learned more about the composite Micarta. Wow these resins including Kwikwood are a legit useful material. A lot of the micarta is a solid material of surplus WWII tarp material from US Navy ships (apparently there's tons of it) and typical two part clear resin. The tarp can be layered after coating with resin and it not only adds color but unique strength. Many modern knife handles are made of the material. It can be bought in blocks of many dimensions or you can make it yourself. Pretty cool stuff. Not unlike fiber glass.

Innovative way to do the scales. I’d be interested to hear how long they last, without pins to keep them in position. Did you consider adding them?
@357magdad

I'm hoping the epoxy got pushed into the holes I drilled to hold the scales in place.

Excellent restoration but I’m a little confused. Why did you drill all the holes in the handle, was that to help hold the putty? You have a very ingenious mind!!
@357magdad
@357magdad 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Frank! Since I wasn't gonna use any pins, I was hoping the epoxy would flow into the extra holes and help lock the handles in place.

Great job..... You gave me some ideas. I have a Perfect Handled Screw Diver in similar condition that I have meaning to fix up. When you had the scales off I thought it would look nice if you cleaned up the metal handles, then painted the insides and put on a clear acrylic 'see through' handle. The process would be similar to what you did with the wood putty. I was wondering why you didn't use bright copper pins on your handle. It really would have offset the dark stain of the handle. Brilliant job. Michael from Canada

That came out great! I bet it wouldn’t hard to install pins with the kwik wood. Is flitz actually a paint restorer? Can you show us how that works?
@357magdad
@357magdad 3 жыл бұрын
I have not tried Flitz on paint. I've only used it on metal and plastic. I bet if you had a painted item that was super oxidized, the Flitz would work like polishing compound.
