Very nice restoration! In case any one is interested: I have a lot of old screwdrivers like that and I’ve come to learn that not all of them that at first look like that are not necessarily true ‘Phillips’ screwdrivers. There are many different types that have subtle variations and differences - and it’s easier to detect the difference during actual use rather than just looking at them. A few of the ones I’ve run into over the years are Reed & Prince, crosspoint, cross recess cross head and more. Although the name is used interchangeably they are not necessarily the same. I have also found that many screwdrivers called “Phillips” generally would work better in more situations if the tip was ground down very slightly, removing the sharp point. Also the ‘blade angle’ varies somewhat in some types. (I hope this is of interest to somebody - but please keep in mind that I have told you more than I know about it)

There is a Japanese version of Phillips called JIS. From watching Mustie1, I know it is easy to strip a JIS screw by using a Phillips screwdriver.

@357magdad2 жыл бұрын
I don't know of a special tool. I have had limited success "restoring" worn Phillips tips.
@mitchjohnson49702 жыл бұрын
@@357magdad, everything I've seen involves people using grinders. I was thinking maybe if there was a triangular file at the appropriate angle to grind the tip down and reshape it again from there. I have a couple sets of screwdrivers that aren't made any more and only one of them can a still purchase. I'm pretty finicky about my tools and like what I'm used to. From what I'm told the angle in between the phillips tips are 87-89 degrees. So a square file with completely reprofile the wings on the phillips tip. I was thinking maybe a bit in a drill press with the proper angle. Then you could do a conical grind to the tip and then recreate the tip.
