This is rather interesting because when you want to glue the metal, the epoxy glue is usually the very first thing that comes to your mind. And then you get the one that will stick to everything but the metal 🙂 First one for me as well.

Pretty darned amazing project there MagDad. Good use of graph paper and several drawn angles to match an angle needed. I learn something new from a these projects and crushing the scales for an imprint, who'd a thunk it.

Well done! Great idea to rough cut then crush the scales onto the frame. Allows a perfect fit. Great attention to detail. I have that same screwdriver picked at a barn sale a long time ago. Did not completely restore as it was in pretty good shape. Not sure how old mine is tho. It does have the stamping saying on shaft. I have pic's if you're interested. Not sure how to get them to you if you want them.

They say "you live and learn"! Today you taught me to be sure and read the label. If someone asked me yesterday I would have responded that JB Weld is the go to stuff to stick stuff to steel. How wrong can I be! Nice tool restoration job. I found a set of screwdrivers that look just like this but, they are a Chinese knockoff. Even though they are not Irwin the grip gives powerful torque to stubborn slotted screws. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Great imaginative way to get such beautifully fitted scales. There was essentially no trial and error fitting in your project , unlike most scale replacement videos I've seen. It came out great the first time. I have an import set of perfect handled screwdrivers which I like. They fit my hand well, and I've had them a long time. The scales (beech I think) can't begin to compare to yours. Thanks.

Nice job, I have and use several of this type of screwdriver. In WW2, most tanks were issued as part of their tools, a set of this type of heavy duty screwdrivers.

I think the technique has promise! It might be similar to what was done at the factory.

@@357magdad possibly. My only concern is if the handle absorbs too much moisture and the wood swells, it might want to ride those angles and separate from the metal underneath. I know you used the good epoxy so it should not, but I think it would have been slightly more robust if you peened the brass pins to mushroom the heads a little before final sanding to mechanically lock the scales onto the handle. Maybe you did, and I missed it, or maybe you did not show it? Sorry I am commenting a while after watching the video!

A + for making your own wood scales I like the bob smith epoxy I use the 5 minute stuff because I am brave and foolish when it comes to using it you have to work fast but I am used to using it
