This Holly music, played with so full enthusiasm, hearts and souls (and excellent skill) by people expected so far from Christianity, England, Germany, helps us all feel we are humans and brothers - and makes the crowd feel the need to stand up (watch the images), no matter religions or nations. Same elsewhere in the world, whether people are aware or told or not.

I believe Handel heard the Angels singing when he was composing this hymn. What angelic music! I used to sing the alto part when I was in school concert choir.

Fully agree with "Excellent" performance, but I find the subtitles particularly appropriate (these holy words are plain, deep and beautiful), carefully done (text is complete yet rid of repeats, clear yet not intrusive on images) and helpful to us numerous non-English speakers (who would NOT follow them easily when just hearing). For good sound, set the KZbin volume slider (right under the image) to 20 or 25%. The sound is not bad (replying to tomaselvis), it is simply too high, and saturates your PC's sound chip. BTW I thank those people who sang this with so much spirit.

I just heard, with DVD quality, one of the best you can hope: Neville Marriner & ASMF, Laszlo Heltay (wonderful ASMF choir founder, under whom I happened to sing); it's as wonderful as expected. Yet I still prefer this Hong-Kong celebration 24 dec 2006, full of spirit and enthusiasm - and surprisingly well feeling Haendel's music. Sat 8 Dec 2007 00:00 GMT (a good time for world-wide Hallelujah!)

I strongly agree with your most important points. For the rest: 1) I think most of audience perfectly and deeply understand this universal prayer 2) New year is particularly important in Asia, for all religions, while Eastern is not as much as in Europe - which can explain what you (judiciously) pointed 3) Has just been reposted in HQ, watch?v=sH52IKiTIlA Mon 6 Apr 2009 11:11 GMT

On my small cheap laptop (Uniwill 223ei0, VIA Vinyl AC97 Codec Combo Driver) the sound is very good. In addition the only 2 flaws (1. sound would suddenly get destroyed, blurred, at start of high volume, 00:18; 2. acting Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 4000 scrolling wheel would pollute the sound) disappeared today when I updated to VIA Vinyl Audio driver 7.00b of 11 Sep 2007. @bladebloodykill Because historically, when Handel first performed this piece as part of his Oratorio, it is said that the King was so moved by the song, he stood up. Well in those times, when the King stood up, so did everyone else present. And here, 200 something years later, the tradition holds strong :)
@Merlin19406 жыл бұрын
« _Well in those times, when the King stood up, so did everyone else present_ » In all countries and eras people tend to imitate the chief, yet I think this behavior is not weaker now than then, and that if the music had not been so beautiful and stirring, the king would not have stood up, or the audiences that day and the many next would not have followed him so long and consistently. Seeing all those families (thousands people?) standing up at 0:33 in 2005 (262 years later) at the moment when the Hallelujah call becomes higher, is increasing the feeling that we humans are all communicating. With the old driver, flaw 1 (at 00:18) only happened when KZbin sound volume was too high. With the new driver, I tested the 2 flaws don't come any more even with both KZbin and Windows sound volumes set at their respective maximums. Mon 29 Oct 2007 23:14 GMT

Bhorum has written here that everyone stands because this piece is considered a heavenly anthem. The real reason is that during the first performance, King George II of England suddenly stood up at the beginning of the piece. This meant that the whole audience and even the orchestra had to stand out of courtesy to the King. Perhaps his gouty foot was playing up. Perhaps he thought the National Anthem was about to start. Perhaps it was in honour of the "King of KIngs". No-one knows!
@joefrerick14 жыл бұрын
The story was when the King of England long decades ago sang this song, he took off his crown then he stood to declare the Kingship of the Lord Jesus Christ.
@Merlin194015 жыл бұрын
Standing up is due IMO to tradition AND music AND human instinct. First time, King stood up, so everyone did. Yet with a less stirring music, King wouldn't have stood up; even if he'd, others wouldn't. OTOH, even sans King and tradition, such music, so well performed, may IMO stir these thousands families here in Hg-Kg to stand up - in tribute to Handel, to performers, to God and to Human kind (no matter continents, religions or politics). To zippidydado..... man is not only heart and brain... there is a dimension, our spirit, and he who is aware of it tries to live the life of spirit. If you don't know yourself, if you don't dig inside yourself and discover what is inside you, you will never find God. If you think you are happy denying Him, nobody can help you. Even Maths recognizes the existence of God, in the symbol of Infinity. And specially our capacity to love, makes us Children of God. That is all.

I find the Fireworks quite appropriate, and even tactful, given this performance was offered to an Asian audience (who like fireworks a lot), and in honor to "Fireworks" author (see above my explanations last year). In addition they were perfectly realized, didn't get in the way (or in the ears), and punctuated the music with precision. Wed 22 Jul 2009 23:10 GMT

@Phersephoie Yeah, kind of surprising. Lots of mission work in the early 20th Century followed by a hyper-militant neighbor I guess. Highest percentage of church going Christians of any nation on the planet. Not saying that's good or bad, just what is.

Sure this was so enthusiastic and spirited (and technically perfect) that they needed no artifices; however they didn't hurt - and were even particularly appropriate in Asia where people fire a lot of them at New Year (of any religion). Sat 16 Feb 2008 19:34 GMT

Speaking as a fervent atheist this is not a bad rendition, although it would be better without the lyrics displayed as they keep reminding that the song's genesis is mired in the era of superstition before religion came to be recognized as the patent absurdity that it is.
