Jumping spiders seem to have so much personality. Ours are black and white and fuzzy; some of them get HUGE (for spiders), and we enjoy them all. Thanks so much for filming this gorgeous guy.

I’ve always had an aversion to spiders but there were two exceptions: jumping spiders, with their furry bodies, cautious, considered movement and goggle eyes that seem to behold the world with comic astonishment. And there was an Argiope aurantia, a garden spider who built her web in our basement stairwell. As a 12 year old I had never seen or heard of such a spider. She was beautiful, vivid yellow and satin black. I will never forget my first sight of her, gleaming in the afternoon sun, resting serenely at the center of her web, the guilded queen of her domain. Her web covered half of the screen door and I decided she was never going to catch much at that location. So I made myself her patron. I caught crickets and small grasshoppers and tossed them onto her web. She would immediately rouse herself from her throne, cautiously approach the struggling captive and rap it quickly and expertly in her silken bonds. She grew fat with my patronage, lived the summer long in luxury and toward the fall she went the way of all spiders. I removed her from the stairwell, wrapped her in a shroud made of her web and returned her to the earth from which she had come. Two of God’s creatures had kept company for a while that summer and I will not forget her.

So SWEET! I wish people were not so ignorant about spiders in general. I guess I could say that about a lot of things though. We actually have spider spots in the house where fruit is carefully put near them so that they have lots of food during the winter. Not your normal household but we don't really show people LOL. The jumping spiders here are black with white spots and very tiny. I almost never see them because the herbicides and pesticides are used so much in this area and when I say area a mean a 5 by 5 Mile maybe ten by ten mile area. They plant trees that are non-native and plants that are non-native and then they get diseased and they don't handle the lack of water during the summer or the tons of water we get during the winter. And nobody would ever think of pulling a weed they just spray it with hundred year round up! It breaks my heart. Anyway thank you for the beautiful spider. When I make it out to my off-grid. Positive thinking. I hope that jumping spiders actually live out away from homes and buildings I don't remember seeing one when I was a kid I'm we were camping but they must live in the woods?

I agree on several counts but they do live near homes as well as in wooded areas. They love to live near lights. I actually found the more yellow jackets and wasps the less jumpers and small lizards I see nearby. If the growers are utilizing more parasitic wasps to control bugs then that may also be lowering their numbers. They are good hiders, ours makes small webs on the chain link fence near our gate lights. It took forever to see the web maker in process. Good luck and take care!

I wouyd say that jumping ones are the cutest but they are the only ones that are cute

I think velvet spiders and certain species of tarantula can be cute too. Sometimes velvet spiders almost look like jumpers in body shape.

All spiders, all arthropods in fact, are very cute. You simply haven't had the opportunity to appreciate that yet

He is super cool. The most common of this species i see is the juveniles, which is unfortunate because the males like this are very awesome looking. Do you know what time of year adults of this species peak? (If anytime)

MarkW I can never understand why spider is willing to climb onto your hand. Surely the fear of being squished or eaten would keep them away. Maybe spiders find us fascinating?

Those are some big jaws on that beautiful little Spider! She looked like she needed to get fattened up some! It would have been pretty cool had she been munching on a 🧃 juicy fly at the time of your video 📸! Still, this was nice to see.

That last shot is a stack (spider was feeding on a cicadellid) taken with a Pentax 28mm reversed (on tubes maybe? ...it's been a while - shot this in 2017)
