@@NicoleCoenen- Actual question for you regarding the wedge. Have you ever seen an axe that used a cone instead of a block? I stumbled across one the other day at an estate sale; the axe was pretty old looking but I'd never seen that before. I might be presuming on your knowledge of older axes but you popped up in my feed so I figured I'd ask...

One of the first handle replacements I did was my grandfather’s eight pound sledge. It had a single metal step wedge in lieu of any wooden ones, much like this maul had. The handle had been cracked for years, so I thought it would be a good welcome home present to replace it for him while he was on a week long trip. I panicked so badly when I realized the wedge wasn’t coming out easily. I barely had time to finish it before he got back.

I’ve found the best way to get a wooden shaft out with a metal wedge is to light a fire and stick the head in it with the wood left in. Burns out and the wedge is left. Also helps burn the rust off too. Would be good to see you try that in the next video!
@lichstein7972 Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't that make the head a little more brittle, or is the fire not enough to matter?

You need to add a brace and bits to your collection of tools. No electricity needed. The last maul I oversaw the reheading of, I had the student( 13) make a circular steel wedge out of a section of 3/8 or 1/4 pipe on one of our Lathes. Not only did he get to learn how to install a handle with handle with wood wedges but use a metal lathe to make a steel lock wedge. I had to bring up a draw knife to shape the handle to fit the maul, my preferred method. We had several spiking mauls to do as well on the day he returned faster breaking the splitting maul handle. Draw knifes are the only blades to use to shape a handle. I have done it with other blades. Our young volunteer had wanted to split some wood. Something he had never done before. His father was sort of surprised we let him have at it. His comment was “he has never done this before and will break the handle”. My comment was yes that will happen and then he gets to learn how to replace a handle. With four of us old guys standing there the question became how long until he broke the handle. It took about ten minutes. Longer than I expected. We were a Cal Poly(SLO) entity “Learn by Doing”. Our entity is no more. We no longer get to help the next generation “learn by doing” RIP Swanton Pacific Railroad
