Why use the folded/Damascus steel for the handle? It is hidden and seems a huge waste, cutting away, material, and time lost. Make another blade, or 2 or 3, with all that hard work. Just weld on a plain steel tang.

A lot of times if you weld a tang on the it doesn’t have the same type of steel as the blade or the tang and in the quench it often make the blade warp or crack so it’s more expensive to use all that Damascus but it’s safer for the blade
