Is it heavy enough? I've made 2 saps the first was a trial no spring inside so too floppy and not enough weight in the head. The next one I'm satisfied with the steel ruler I cut to fit and melted the lead around, then glued and sowed it into the leather. Very slim in fact got it in my back pocket right now. Invisible but effective.

The sap is a great self-defense weapon one level before deploying a firearm. I have seen many people struck with a sap and it is a very effective weapon. I would not recommend a head strike which could be fatal unless the use of deadly force is justified. I would recommend a 4-ply sap because I have seen the lead weight fly out of a 2-ply on a hard strike. Many companies make these weapons although they are prohibited in some jurisdictions. Great video.
@SugarcreekForge4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, JDP. That is good information to have. What are less-lethal places to strike with one?
@TexasNightRider4 жыл бұрын
@@SugarcreekForge Any place below the neck. Shoulder blades, elbows, ribs are effective strike zones and will cause the subject to reevaluate the situation. I have seen a morbidly obese male absorb a couple of blows to the upper arm and chest but the sap was eventually effective. Personally I would rely on pepper spray first if possible. I have sprayed several people with Sabre Red. They are startled for about 1 - 2 seconds which can give you time to place some distance between you and them, but once they recover they have another (on average) about 10 - 12 seconds to continue the attack before they start with the Wilhelm scream. The good thing is there are no injuries. Both are effective weapons.

Do you suppose casting two separate spoon ingots and sandwiching them on either side of a full length spring shank would make much of a difference? Too stiff perhaps? I would love to give this a go. I own a couple saps that I have bought. Fortunately they are totally legal in my state (Utah) I bought 1 on Amazon and one at my local Army/Navy Surplus Store in Salt Lake City. However, as to be expected, any sap one finds on Amazon or Military Surplus Store is masses produced, and while I am sure it works, it is cheap looking and not what I am looking for aesthetically. I have an idea of what I want and though the others are functional, the look I want is more because it’s kind of cool, not because I intended on relying on it to use. I have bought the supplies to make oneThat I have found very little information on the process of sap making an no videos until this one. It seems pretty self-explanatory, and I was just going to freestyle it. I am a woodworking hobbyists and amateur craftsman, but I am not a leather smith and have virtually no experience with leather craft. So while the project seems obvious, like most projects there are no doubt things one doesn’t account when crafting a project for the first few times. Great video, thank you for posting it. It gave me a couple of new ideas and reinforced that my plan of attack is on the right track, I was just missing some details that would really simply unforeseen variables.
