A common misconception about saps and blackjacks is that they are so small, that they can't possibly pack much of a punch. There is of course a reason why they were relied upon for centuries in close quarter combat. As we will see here, their unique design can be easily tested to show you how much firepower they conceal. I was outnumbered and got stabbed in the head, but I had my 9 inch black jack, I won the fight easily & walked myself to hospital. Blackjacks are one of the most misunderstood weapons out there, the beauty of them is it doesn't take much effort at all to turn an attackers legs to jelly. Full swings are a waste. The problem is most the people that speak about them have never actually used them. They're not the one hit killers most people say they are. I like this take on em, especially the "just get a hit" part, doesn't really matter where, touch em and you'll win.

Ive got an 8" leather sap with an oversized pouch full of lead shot and wasted 2 guys who hassled me in a bar bathroom. No they aren't killers but they'll definitely drop dudes to their knees. One body shot and a backhand to the neck or head and that bitch be crying for momma.

In the 1950''s my grandfather, an auxiliary constable, was called to arrest a man reported to be drunk and disorderly and known to habitually carry a butcher knife when he got in his cups. He didn't give the right answer when Officer G'Pop offered him a hot and a cot in the ironbar. Reaching behind his back was the wrong response and the next question asked was a jab to his forehead with a slap jack in Papa's fist. When he woke up in jail the goose egg on his forehead told the story. Several years after hearing this story a family friend and a State trooper said to turn the slapjack on it's edge to strike the outside of the thigh or inside fairly high on the leg was a fast way to chop down a hard man or someone on horse tranqs.

Carried one when I worked as a bouncer. If there was only one troublemaker , it would stay in my back pocket (unless he was particularly strong or violent) but once I had two boys that had been ejected for bad behavior. They came back with 4 friends. The problem for them was, the entrance was up a narrow stairway...so they had to come one at a time. When it was over their unconscious bodies were laying one on top of the other. They didn't get back in. A blackjack WILL knock someone out if properly used.

As a patrolman back in the 1960s, my dad broke a blackjack over the head of a sailor at a bar called the Thirsty Camel in Norfolk, VA. Probably the seam at the end of blackjack where the lead weight was split, but although he knocked the guy out, he was left holding a leather handle with a spring sticking out the end of it. After that he bought one of the flat slapjacks, and always trusted that better. I joined the same police department in 2000 (and still work there), but these things were long since banned from police use by then, though some old-timers still had the pants with the blackjack pockets in them.

I was given a Convoy in the mid 80’s. A striking pattern I was shown was left fingers to the eyes, upper cut with the jack under the chin, followed by a lateral strike to the left side of the jaw and then a 45 degree down stroke across the right collar bone angled toward the left hip if that makes any sense. One distraction, three quick strikes. If the attacker is still wanting to fight after that, there are big problems. Never had to use it.

Man I remember those! My older brother carried one of them as a police officer back in the early 70s! One day I went to his room and found it under his mattress, man at the time I’ve never seen one or knew the damage it can do! I was a teenager then, so when I thought it was toy! 😂I was playing with it and ended up hitting my jaw with it! Man ouch! What a punch it packed! It almost knocked one of my tooth! It did bruised me, so I put it back under the mattress! And cried my way out of his room! My mom asked me, “What happened to you!? Who hit you?!” I had to come up with some stupid answer! That I had fallen and hit the side of my bed! But my brother knew I was lying and knew I was playing with his blackjack! He told me, “that’s what you get for touching what is not yours! After that I learned my lesson! But I was hooked with those things. Now I own quite a few of them, and different sizes, I keep a few in the house, in the garage and in my car. Love them. But you learn to respect them and used them!👌😂👍

1960s London gangs everyone had one on them because you could take on 3 people at once and if you knew how to use it properly then they were extremely effective. behind the ear, the temple or jaw was what you aimed for, accuracy and speed count for more than a big swing to go for a powerful shot and that makes it less accurate so it was better to drop a big blow to the collar bone. but if you're facing a good boxer you will really damage hands wrists and elbows in a agonising manner and very little force behind it and the easiest way to get a strike to their hands is by keeping your guard up the sap in your back hand and step back when he jabs and flip the sap straight into the jab so they connect at full extension and it will shatter knuckles and bones in the high speed of impact

Police stopped carrying them specifically because of the risk for trauma and death.

I’m a fan. It’s worthwhile investing in a quality one if you’re going to rely on them. They obviously offer more range but are heavier to carry. A sap is much easier to carry and is flexible so it absorbs recoil but a baton offers easier targeting knees and lets you stay further away.

I carried one as a police officer. The advantages are that they were easier to carry than a 26” baton. Then also would not draw blood like a baton to the head or a flash light to the head. The D cell flashlights were by far the most effective impact weapons. A black jack or slap jack would fit in your back pocket and bend with you when you sat down. They have nowhere near the power of a straight baton or a flashlight ( not the little lights they issue now 5 “D” size battery lights). You might have to hit a man six times in the head with a slap jack ( a flat blackjack) to put him out of the fight. They were made of leather, spring steel in the handle and an once of lead in the head or striking portion.

@Combatprofessor
@Combatprofessor 21 күн бұрын
Most people on the street swing wide. Yes a trained fighter will stay tight but that gets covered in most sparring. For street defense you need to also train against the haymaker. It’s the most likely thing you will see. I worked the door for years and very few people have the experience to stay tight and fire straight. Moreover, a lot of highly trained sport fighters crumple under the pressure of raw aggression. Even if you watch the majority of elite boxers, once the war is waging, hands drop, shots get wide, and aggression overcomes finesse. Instead of relying on second -hand stories, get on the mat and train with contact. The truth becomes apparent very quickly. Or if you’re deeply concerned, get a job in an intervention field and experience reality firsthand. You’ll learn more in a single encounter than in a lifetime of stories.

So model wise I prefer a flat beaver tail sap over a cylindrical blackjack. It offers more variability like slapping or cutting or even stabbing for a short jab. While I understand the desire to get small and portable I like something at least 8’inches long for length and weight. Now it depends on budget. The cheap Chinese variants at 30 bucks are ok but if you can find a hand crafted variation in your area there is no comparison. The leather, durability and fit tend to be much better. Where are you located ? Maybe I can refer someone near you who sells them .

@Combatprofessor 2 жыл бұрын
@@truebeliever8605 no I’ve never dealt with them. The shorter saps are fine too I just like a solid grip and as much weight behind it as possible. I typically carry this in the winter when being gloved and in a heavy jacket can make using a folder less comfortable and when carrying is easier. The short ones still pack a wallop there’s just a big difference in power with the heavier ones.

The problem with this kind of training is the attacker never reacts as someone without padding would. Sure, each attacker can take different levels of pain, but the defender never gets to see the effectiveness of the hits and the attacker keeps attacking after a real hit would have put them on the ground. What this kind of training does do for you, is to let you practice on getting into position to use your weapon. Overall, much better than just hitting on a BOB which will only teach you power, but not distance/timing/real angles.
@Combatprofessor
@Combatprofessor 11 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Every simulation has its limits. This is more for timing and movement. Incidentally some attackers don’t respond as you would expect or feel much in the moment. I’ve fought some zombies working the door, so for building the reflex of continuance and constant drive there is nothing more important. I would rather train overkill and extra drive.

How would you say does the impact compare to a 50cm wood baton, or that spring with the metal ball at the end of roughly the same length as the baton? The latter is quite popular among thugs today in Europe, as it is collapsible and works better than the telescopic police baton. BTW, in my childhood, the most frequent weapon besides knives was a double layer of bicycle chains (they just broke it off a parked bicycle and thus the weapon was ubiquitous and free) and that was used pretty much like the blackjack.
@Combatprofessor
@Combatprofessor 2 жыл бұрын
Compared to anything rigid of comparable length the impact is much heavier. Compared to the flexible spring batons of the same length it’s about the same depending I. The weight of the sap. I do have some saps however that are quite heavy and that surpass the comparable s but then they become less convenient to carry. There are much smaller saps that are tear drops and very light. These pack less impact but all of them are more than enough to knock you out.

@@Combatprofessor please show those small saps. I am looking for an edc so they should be rather small. Also I think they are illegal in my country, they are called "death batter". So the less it looks like one the better. I think this is the best self-defense tool to carry, in my case anyways. I don't want to stab or shoot someone, repercussions could be bad. Batons are not practical to carry, even though I love my Tonfa. Right now I carry a monkey fist in my jacket and a small flashlight in my bag, also a small knife. I think knockout power is the most important, would be great if it could be hidden inside an harmless looking small object. Thank you for your video

6.09 why would you rather use the sap or black jack than stab someone.
@Combatprofessor
@Combatprofessor Жыл бұрын
Stabbing is likely to get you an excessive force charge. In most areas of the world it’s always regarded as lethal force. With a blackjack an argument can be made you were only trying to stun. A single blackjack hit can immediately stub or knockout . A single stab is less likely to completely stop someone in most cases unless you’re hitting the brain. Stabs usually take time to fully shut someone down and during that time the subject can be dangerously functional.

I have family and friends who have used these in police work many years ago. They said these were quite a bit more effective than a baton minus reach especially against people amped up on drugs. The sap would almost always stop an assault once used correctly. Now, due to snow flake policies, police are no longer permitted and these are pretty much illegal in most states for anyone to carry. This is ridiculous and you can carry a gun but not a blackjack or sap?!!? ...WTH?!? I love these things and have several different types. I carry different ones depending on dress and situation. Practice with these is also key. Power is not required, speed and surprise are the key! Also, go for any joint: elbow, wrist, hand or collar bone (as demonstrated)..it will break bones! A head shot is not always required to stop an action.

I find them pretty similar in some aspects to the nagaika used to strike with a handle kept just below its end where the flexible part starts. Also with kuban (nothing to do with Cuba!) nagaikas I have, their very slightly weighted business end (just more braiding resulting in twice as much thickness) transfers more energy on the hit, although they are much longer (mine are respectively 50 and 70cm) so they are used a bit differently.

@Jon Henson Absolutely. I’ve seen it with a sap. I saw a guy dropped with a sap shot to the thigh fwhich would never be my go to but it just took him out and he was barely able to breathe he was in so much pain. I’ve also seen a tear drop sap the size of a key chain split a guy open wide and disorient him so badly he almost walked into traffic. I’ve seen a few knockouts with them at close range. A lot of the first team I worked the door with were religious about them. The thing is they absorb recoil so you can just swing with reckless abandon. I’ll do a review of my newest sap later this week and show the differences between some models. It’s all about the weight distribution. A tip heavy sap can really multiple your force. I personally used them at very close range with tighter hits a few times and they always created space and stunned. I have a lot of confidence in them but it boils down to how you fight. You need to mix them with your style of movement.
