Hands-only CPR can make a life changing impact. Here's what to know about it

According to the American Heart Association, only 10% of people in the U.S. who experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital survive each year. It's in part because more than half don't receive CPR. Mike Smith, a CPR instructor with the American Heart Association, shows how to properly do hands-only CPR.

As a Sudden Cardiac Arrest survivor I can attest to the lifesaving importance of CPR training. In some countries, CPR certification is required in order to get a driver’s license. CPR education should be part of education curriculum. You and I are someone’s key to life.

Respectfully, I think Tony Dukopil failed this assignment. He didn’t treat the CPR with the respect it actually merited. They literally just got done reporting that over half of patients don’t receive bystander CPR after a cardiac event. And yet, he quit halfway through and waved it off? Not a good look.

I have seen lives saved when bystanders were able to initiate CPR. If you are unsure about how to do it, take a class. Some Fire Departments have community programs to teach CPR. Circulation of oxygen already in the body can sometimes sustain the patient until Emergency Responders arrive. Cardiac arrest can happen to all ages, unfortunately. Get proper training for how to administer CPR to children and infants.

The truth is that CPR is terrific if you can survive the damage it does. Work in a hospital and see what happens to the frail elderly who DO survive after CPR. Not pretty. They didn't want to live if it had to be like that.
