Those japanned finishes are always nearly impossible to remove with anything other than sand blasting or electrolysis. Glad to see you figured it out with electrolysis - that's my go-to for removing it. I always die a bit inside when I have to remove japanned finishes because I know I'll never be able to properly replicate that process myself (even with all of Hand Tool Rescue's great videos on the subject). I might've gone for just a black enamel paint finish myself, but that clear coated bare cast iron contrasts nicely with the wood color - great job! 👍
@HandsonRestoring2 жыл бұрын
Thanks you for watching and your feedback 👍 we agree it´s a pitty to remove those japanning finish and i myself never tried to replicate it, it´s really dificult to master that process.

The japanning is always hard to get off with paint striper the only problem with taking it if is that it never looks as good as it did with any other type of paint. There are a few channels that have nailed the best way to make and apply it Why did you scrap the paint off the numbers and not put something to keep them from rusting?? I like that you made the brass part for it Looks great and did a wonderful job restoring it Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up as a support

Gracias Atila, lo importante es la corriente, el voltaje dependerá de la conductividad del medio, mi fuente da hasta 5 amperes creo que usé cerca de 4 amps. Saludos

The reason pain remover could not remove the black color, is because it was not paint. It was japaning. Black in japaning is basically due to asphalt. You can try soaking with turpentine. That said, Hammerite modern paint was also not the best choise. Japaning black would be awesome ;)
@HandsonRestoring2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching and your feedback i really appreciate,,, yes i agree Hammerite it´s not the same but japanning is not easy to master (I will need to learn about it)
