Never normally leave reviews but loved watching this. So nice to have a calm clear explanation and a real treat to see someone using a brace & bit instead of screaming away with a cordless drill. Nice also to see slotted woodscrews being used instead of cross heads (again probably because they weren't driven in with power tools). I'll be hanging a pair of these soon so it'll be twice as difficult. Good to be able to watch someone else doing it first and explaining the possible pitfalls. Really good advice about positioning the height of the top pin. Thank you for posting.

If you are an occasional screw up like me and you get the gap between the hinges too short you can add a washer or two as needed.

Thanks for this. Brilliant job. I have just hung a small garden gate at the top of our orchard on a hill. I fitted the hanging bracket hooks on the inside face of the posts and the hanging brackets on the inside face of the gate, so the gate isn't flush with the posts, but no will really see it anyway; sticks a couple of cm to the outside of the posts. I wondered what you'd suggest as a locking mechanism as the internal surface of the gate lines up with the middle of the posts... I was thinking of a bolt on the gate that would slide into a drilled hole on the post. Any other ideas?

I was always told the bottom hook, (batt) should be slightly proud of the top hinge by about 1/8" this will ensure the head or top of the gate is high as over time the weight of the gate will cause the opening side of the gate to drop. You can already see how the gate has dropped (your spirit level and uneven gap on the hinge side. That said, nice methodical approach to installing a farm style gate. How is it holding up by the way.? Thanks and good luck.

Nice Video. Is there a reason why you fitted the hooks to the outside face of the post rather than the inside face ? does it make any difference ? Regards Emmett

The face to face meeting of the gate and posts is neater.
@paulrichards15297 ай бұрын
@@Charlyfarly2 Definitely neater, so long as you only need it (or them if a pair) to open in one direction. Otherwise, inside face but it will leave a gap between the post and the style.

Great video, thanks for the help! Going to hang my gates now. Had to dig 30 holes in my garden over the weekend that were over an old farm yard... took 45 minutes a hole with a jack hammer!!! If I want the gate to swing shut do i hang the gate slightly off level?
@Charlyfarly23 жыл бұрын
Hello Oliver, that sounds like a big job. Re closing - you could hang it off level but I would buy a spring. Farmers use an old inner tube :)

Thank you for showing that. Will the augers work on a 6 inch oak post? also, is the threaded hinge pin supposed to go in the bottom to take the weight of the gate?
@Charlyfarly24 жыл бұрын
Like all drills it will depend on how sharp they are but 'Yes' they will work on an oak post. The weight of the gate is taken by the top hinge pin not the bottom one.

Thank You so much. My father was a carpenter and his family back to Heidelberg Castle, and prior to that boat builders on the Baltic Sea. The Brace and Bit are still used by some Master Carpenters. Brace and Bit are "cordless," their "batteries," never loose their charge, last for working life of the owner, as does the motor. Even if you own modern drill, I recommend keeping a Brace and Bit set for back up, or work in remote locations.
@MrTolesi7 жыл бұрын
Surely ALL of the weight - so the long hinge - is meant to be at the bottom, and the short hinge, installed slightly low to take no weight at all, is only meant to keep the gate straight? That's how it's always does round here.
@wuyanger16 жыл бұрын
Nope.....small at bottom, reason is the get pushes inwards on the lower hinge, but pulls outwards on the top hinge....basic engineering
