Top tip I figured out is if you drill a small pilot hole first before drill a large hinge bolt hole, then you can drill a bit of a hole from either side without the worry of of splitting the wood and this way it doesn’t matter if you have a spade bit or not. Hope this helps.

good video, short concise and with good diagrams, some solid tips there. My only quibble is that if you aren't fitting a hardwood gate like this, it would be better to give it more clearance to keep the bottom drier and prolong its life.

Great vid, just a couple of minor points, you said to put the top pintel as low as you could, but as you are aware (because you did it after),you should be setting the top pintel just a touch high of the hinge as most plate pintels aren't welded straight, you also neglected to mention how the plates should be set an equal amount from the side of the post to ensure a gate that will open level, lastly, and this is my personal modus opardi, drill through the hinge when it is laying flat on bearers, it is far easier to drill when the gate is lying flat rather upright and having to push against it, I fit nearly all fixtures and fittings lying flat for this reason, which merely means that you only have to fit furniture keeps onto the post in an upright position.

It is difficult to drill a horizontal hole in a gatepost because you are behind the drilling machine and cannot see very well. I have glued a small spirit level onto the top of my drilling machine and watch its bubble while drilling. Keeping the bubble within the marks helps keep the drill bit horizontal.

Great video really helpful! I have a heavy 5ft wide gate to hang it came with the same hinges your using for this gate but a little longer they have 3 screw holes on the hinge not 2, What size screw do you recommend i use fors crewing the gate and hinges? Any help would be great.
@GatesExpectations9 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, Thanks for the comments. Number of screw holes increase as the hinges get larger,you're probably using either a 16, 18 or 20 inch hinge with that many screw holes. For the screws length wise as big as the gate will take (without the screws coming through!) i.e. for a 2 3/4" thick gate use say 2 1/2" screws. Hope that helps! Jon

How do you determine how far to fit the hinge on the gate?
@jcbairmaster7311 жыл бұрын
I wondered on the difference of cranked to straight,and plumbing the inner stile of the gate,I have learnt something here.Would tee hinges or hooks and bands afford more of the available opening in a restricted width gateway?,the one I am fitting is 27",and I intend to use H/B for this reason,I think tee's will be a bit more restrictive.Am I right?

Excellent video. Thank you. I’ve read that the hinges should only be fixed to the front or rear of the post and not to the inside next to the gate. Is this essential? Ideally I would like the gate to open both ways.
@GatesExpectations6 жыл бұрын
If the gate opens both ways then you would tend to use field gate hinges, something like this > www.woodworkersuk.co.uk/shop/field-gate-hinge-sets.htm You would need to allow larger clearances between the hinge side of the gate and the post or wall however.
@PaulSpringford6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your prompt reply. I think I might have to be satisfied with one way opening. I have some non-flanged hinges. How far should the post hole be from the gate edge? From the video I’m guessing about 2 inches.

Thanks for your video! I am going to use pintle and 12 in. strap hinges for my double gate and two single gates ( 3 ft. x 6 ft) made from redwood lumber and hinged to 4 x 4 redwood posts. At minute 4:52 on your video, the gap between the inside edge of the gate (where the hinges are) and the frame appears to be quite wide, such that I can see into your yard. From the inside, the gap appears to be within 10mm. I am concerned because I want to use strap/pintle for the hinges but I don't want a large gap. I assume that I can attach the gate to the hinge a little closer to the post to narrow the gap without compromising the swing. One suggestion I would make for most of the videos I see including yours would be to pull back and show the finished work front and back at the end. It makes for a nice conclusion but also gives the viewer an overview of the outcome.
@billcarlsbad61686 жыл бұрын
look at minute 5:08 and you will see the actual opening size when gate is closed; very small and proper

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you sell the cranked hinges? Thanks
@fgriffintx7 жыл бұрын
Very useful video. I looked all over for "Part 1", but I guess that doesn't exist. In any case, you might consider adding a little discussion about clearances, Is there a reason you don't want the two gates to touch when closed? Is is a geometry problem that the gates would bind before closing? I have a situation where I made two white painted gates to cover the entrance to a small garage, and I'd prefer not a wide gap in the middle.
@billcarlsbad61686 жыл бұрын
wood gates will expand in width when wet so be prepared to plane them if you have very small clearance on the locking side....all the expansion will go in that direction
@revisionistcrap211 Жыл бұрын
@@billcarlsbad6168 HI. How big should the clearance be? I'm getting ready to build a double gate but this is the thing I'm most unsure about. Tha frame will be constructed from 8cm x 8cm. Hope you see this, thanks.

but isn't the weight of the entire gate on bottom hinge only ? surely turning the top one upside down turns it into a guide only not a support.better to use top hinge as intended to help support weight of gate?

Can you tell me how to adjust the hinges. I have a double gate with these hinges and they appear to have dropped in the middle and the tops of the gates in the middle are rubbing together. Can they be adjusted.
@GatesExpectations11 ай бұрын
Hi, the hinges shown are 'cranked band & gudgeon hinges and not really adjustable without either repositioning the hinges or hinge plate. For something adjustable you'd need something like www.woodworkersuk.co.uk/adjustable-hook-band-gate-hinge/

I am blown away by how many videos there are about hanging gates and many of them very informative but all assuming that you already have your gate posts installed at the proper spacing. Why not start out by telling the audience what the rough opening should be? E.g. the space between posts for a 12' gate. Is the rough opening 12'-0" or is it 12'-6" or ????
@fgriffintx7 жыл бұрын
Good point! Personally I'd build the gate after the posts were installed. Very tricky to set posts at a very specific distance, I've found, especially when you pour concrete around the bases.

Because the hinges are mounted on the inside face of the gate in this example. The head of the bolt should always sit on the outer face.
