Honestly, the Green brothers are some of the best parts of the internet. I’ve been following since ‘09 and they are genuinely great people who are effecting positive change in the world. They are the best of us and encourage all to try to be the best version of ourselves possible. I could go on, but their positive influence on the world cannot be understated. And they’re just very normal (if extremely talented, hardworking) individuals and I think that is a critical form of representation needed online nowadays with all the trash-influencers spreading around like wildfire.

I think young folks with cancer diagnoses are also worried about cost. As someone who is currently dealing with this, my husband has and is getting treatment for cancer, and it's completely drained our measly savings and cost us so much money. Over $10,000 out of pocket, of which we're paying what we can monthly for. And obviously I want my husband to get treatment and get better, but we did have some very serious conversations about him not wanting to be here, him feeling guilty about how expensive it was, and what more we could do to be able to afford it. I'm thankful he has a therapist to help get through the mental strain. But yeah, we're gunna have to live with this medical debt for a long time.

You have to connect with the social worker at the hospital or treatment center where your husband goes. There are so many organizations that give out grants for people in your position. 👋🏻 Hi. I’ve had cancer for ten years. 😊 Most of the grants I received were around a thousand dollars. There was also an organization in my area that paid bills for you. So they paid our mortgage for a few months and a car payment and an electric bill. All of that added up and kept us from losing our house (for now). Look in to disability. Medicaid/Medicare. A lot of things depend on your type of cancer and income, but it never hurts to try. I have a very deadly type of cancer. So I was approved for disability automatically. It’s not that way for most people. And lastly, just google cancer charities. Usually you have to fill out a short form and write a paragraph about your situation. It is worth the time. Good luck. And tell your husband this stranger is proud of him!

Hank talking about the absurdity of reality, and how we're basically a collection of bacteria that has convinced itself that it's a conscious individual, speaks to me. I don't know if it's personal, tragedy or the state of the modern era, or some combination of several things, but life for me also has become genuinely different in feel, and I always fall back on "it feels weird because we are weird, cosmically"

It was really good being able to hear you both discussing Hank's cancer journey. I've been diagnosed with a slow-growing lymphoma myself, and it's been difficult dealing with the lack of treatment because I haven't met the threshold to get treatment yet. The danger of cancer in my body isn't more dangerous than the effects of chemo, and so I just have to sit here and wait. I thinks it's really important to talk about these things. Thank you for this discussion. And thank you Hank, for documenting your journey and teaching us more about cancer and cancer treatment. It's definitely helped to soothe some of my worries.

That must be frightening and stressful, to know you have cancer and just have to wait around for it to get worse. You can't really get into that "fighting for your life" mentality. I feel like I wouldn't even want to know I have cancer until something can be done about it, but that's probably not a great way to think about it. There's gotta be some middle ground between "knowing each and every disease you're genetically more disposed to" and "being wilfully ignorant of your health". I wish all the best to you on your journey!

He had Alzheimer's so was getting unwell slowly for quite a long time but in his final years & months he was just happy to sit back and listen to his family, and he always told us how gorgeous we were and that he was proud, even when he couldn't remember our names. I think he knew everything he did in his life lead up to all of us being safe and happy, and so he was done.

I loved that you spoke with Hank and I love that he's doing stand-up about his journey through cancer. When he found out, I was so worried and concerned for him and his family. Then, I found out that we have autoimmune disorders/diseases under the big umbrella of autoimmune diseases and we take a similar type of injection that can cause cancer. Not to turn it on myself, but I did start to think about the what ifs. Then, I found out in November that I had endometrial cancer, which the stats are not great for. I had to have emergency surgery for a hysterectomy at 40, which is very young for this type of cancer (median age is 62). Thankfully, it was caught early enough that it had not spread, and the removal of uterus and other parts was enough that I didn't have to go through chemo or radiation. However, there was a month before the surgery, where I had the similar thoughts as Hank about take that dark leap. I felt inadequate for my family and support system, especially since I'm also disable, and I just wish that more people spoke about these things. The dark, the bad, the ugly, and the good. I wish I'd had someone to speak to that I wouldn't burden. Therapy would have been great, but the medical bills I already have and the small income I bring in doesn't allow me to take take care of all my medical needs, like most people in the States. As is, I'll never get out of medical debt and the cancer just piled another 10k on top of what I already owe. (Medical insurance covered a little over 90% of it, otherwise...) Anyway, I know this is long and I added a lot of my own personal stuff, but I'm so proud and thankful for Hank speak honestly and truthfully about these things. And thank you to Anthony for expanding the platform to let more people know about this. Now, it's time for a Hank Green Netflix Comedy Special!! Blessings and kind, healing thoughts to all. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Back when i was in middle school and high school, some of my teachers actually used crash course videos as part of the curriculum. I felt like i always learned more in those classes because it was so much more interesting than studying a book. Thanks Hank for helping me enjoy my classes back when i was a wee child! 😊

As someone with a Bachelor of Communication Studies I forgot that not everyone knows how disruptive new communications technology is. Like back when Europeans mostly wrote on stone tablets, information could survive a long time but not go much in distance. The printing press made distance easier but longevity only somewhat. The telegraph could go very far distances instantly which was literally never a thing humans could do until then.

Hank I watched your videos on Anatomy and Physiology over and over while on my journey to then apply to the Nursing program and here I am! I'm on my third week in the program! You made the complex content so much easier to digest and I thank you a million times for it! Love you Hank!

So funny seeing Hank's hair grow in so curly after chemo. I've seen it happen quite a bit, same with alopecia, and I think it's interesting!

One of my very good friends recently passed from her cancer and one of the things we enjoyed together was the nerdfigjter community. On twitter shortly after Hank announced to us what was happening with him, she and him a few short interactions on twitter or threads about ports and getting them putting and removed. I remember reading them after the fact and just marveling over how funny they both were about this terrible thing that was actively killing my friend. It was a beautiful thing to experience. I’m happy Hank is doing better and happy that my friend got to laugh with him for a moment.

I really appreciate Hank’s honesty here, both the good and bad impacts from cancer diagnosis/treatment. I’m the spouse of someone who’s gone through cancer treatments (so a little different) but yeah I’m also working through the added anxiety from that and got myself into therapy as well. You can experience both the highest of highs and the lowest of lows during that period. I look forward to hopefully hearing his stand up. Unfortunately couldn’t make it when he was in my area 😢

I have watched him for many years and I was diagnosed with the same kind of cancer (I think slightly higher stage) 2 weeks before Hank announced his to the world. It was so comforting to see someone else going through what I was going through and it really made me feel not so alone. So thanks Hank even if it did make you the "cancer guy", (which I dont think you were) for a bit you've helped me so much on my own journey and Im sure many others aswell.

The way that Hank Green describes his standup makes me think of Hannah Gadsby’s special Nanette. It’s a raw experience that’s not all laughs the whole way through, but is punctuated with enough of them to still classify as a comedy special

I have always had a lot of medical anxiety, especially surrounding cancer, like at times just hearing the word would make me dizzy, and following Hank's journey with it helped so much, it made it less of a terrifying unknown, and hearing about the treatments, all the scientific facts just made it so much more digestable, I'm so thankful that he shared it the way he did.

The best way to channel nervous energy is to try and replace that feeling with being excited. To me, the physical symptoms are similar, but the positive connotation of “excitement” makes it feel much better :) I try to do this whenever I perform. Sweaty hands from being excited sounds better than anxiety sweat. I hope that makes sense lol
