This past February my beautiful Son chose to leave us as a young man of 16 years old. Lost in my own broken heart, I wasn't there, mentally and emotionally to tend to his broken heart when needed most, as a father should be. With every breath and until my last I'll walk the path that Hiram sings of here in this song. Please, brothers and sisters, take no little thing for granted in this life. It is far more frail than any of us percieve it to be. Find peace my Son. My heart is with you always and forever! E.J.G lll, 22 July 2003 - 12 February 2020

I never ever thought country people were stupid, crazy or ignorant. I will tell you a story,though. I was playing on the streets of Burlington Vermont as a busker. I was having a slow evening Friday last. This fellow is sauntering down the street with four of his buddies; mid to late 30s. Heading for the bar no doubt. It turns to me gives me the thumbs up and says: "attaboy".,... Which immediately gets my goat! I immediately jump up and call after him..." I am not a boy,I am a full grown man, thank you!" About an hour later they come up the street he comes right over to me and throws a penny at me. I am country He is city. It is the country people of our beautiful America who make it great. Too often it is the city types and suburban types who think that they are better than everybody else. I am here to tell you they are not. I am here to tell you that I can do a thousand songs on that street from memory and do not deserve to be treated like a bum by some spoiled suburban brat in a grown up body. I have played that street when there were 100,000 people walking down it...and made a whopping 100 bucks, playing Hank Williams Johnny Cash Elvis Presley Bob Dylan Gordon Lightfoot Hank Williams Jr Waylon Jennings Willie Nelson Beatles John Lennon George Harrison Ray Charles muddy Waters Robert Johnson Greg Brown towns Van zandt Ian Tyson Neil Young. To my reckoning there is something very disturbing about 99,900 passers-by that could give two shots about an American folk singer ..Oh,I forgot Woody Guthrie,Stan Rogers,Jimmy Rogers...The Stones blad da Doo,blada dee.Point is ignorance is hardly picky about whom it seeds in...ya know? Perhaps the truest knowledge is home grown in the hills and mountains of the Appalachians or the South...in the Cotton fields or roadhouse's or the streets of Atlanta during the depression. Country?City? I'm going up on the mountain and there I will take my stand with a rifle on my shoulder and a pistol in my hand. I've been all around this world. Do not judge lest you be judged. Jesus said that I think. Peace be to you. All. Forgive them Father for they know not what they do. My mother used to say: the proof is in the pudding! (Too many think the proof is in the bottle.... Like s*** head penny thrower! I think they call it liquid courage. And yes I am a great supporter of gun ownership!As my brother Raymond used to say: I support the right to arm bears! So, I copied Men with broken hearts in my own script.I am going to have some copies made up and offer them 'free' when I busk. God bless everybody! We'll meet again on the avenue, no doubt: Tangled up in blues.
@JoLoneyMusic3 жыл бұрын
A-fucking-men! I used to be one of those ignorant people. Funny enough, a video game like Fallout got me into older music like Johnny Mercer, Billie Holliday, Ray Price, etc. All of that lead me to Leadbelly, Hank Sr, Robert Johnson, Ernest Tubb and way too many others to list. Older country, blues, and folk are now my favourite Genres, Hank being my #1. The pure soul and emotion combined with a fiddle/banjo/guitar are unbeatable.

You'll meet many just like me Upon life's busy street With shoulders stooped and heads bowed low And eyes that stare in defeat Poor souls that live within the past Where sorrow plays all parts For a living death is all that's left For men with broken hearts You have no right to be the judge To criticize and condemn Just think but for the grace of God It would be you instead of him One careless step, a thoughtless deed And then the misery starts And to those who weep, death comes cheap These men with broken hearts Oh, so humble, you should be When they come passing by For it's written that the greatest of men Never get too big to cry Some lose faith in love and life When sorrow shoots her darts And with hope all gone, they walk alone These men with broken hearts You've never walked in that man's shoes Or saw things through his eyes Or stood and watched with helpless hands While the heart inside you dies Some were paupers, some were kings And some were masters of the arts But in their shame they're all the same These men with broken hearts Life sometimes can be so cruel That a heart will pray for death God why must these living dead Know pain with every breath? So help your brother along the road No matter where he starts For the God that made you, made them too These men with broken hearts

The men Hank sings of are the same men, women and children Jesus spoke of when he said, "Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, care for the sick, visit/write to the prisoner and welcome the Stranger into your circle." Ah me, the hopelessness and misery on America's streets should make rivers of tears flow from the doors and windows of every church in this land..... but it doesn't. Only condemnation flows, all to the shame of each and every church. I'll say no more. A person either understands or he doesn't.

No, he wasn’t trying to elevate bums to kings!!! His heart was broken and he knew how it felt and was given the ability to relate that in a way that many of us could understand! Apparently, and I pray, YOU Hillbilly56, have never experienced a really true broken heart! If you haven’t, then you will never understand the true meaning of the song! Forget the video, just listen to the words! For some, as myself, we can keep our shattered hearts hidden from others, but inside, this song describes exactly what I, and others, carry inside every day! We may not be living on the street, but we are truly, “dead men walking” and the pain is forever with us! If you cannot understand this song, I pray that you never experience a “Broken Heart”!
