About backups : as someone with adhd and autism, i find having a backup soothes my mind. I almost always buy 2 of an item because of this. sometimes It can be ex-pensive, but If i don't have 2, I'll use so little it'll go bad before I finish it. For me, this is purely a neurodivergent trait and not driven by consumerism

I have recently added a new "rule" for myself: i do not buy additional shades of the same product, regardless of how much i like it. There are occasional exceptions, of course, (if i like a lipstick formula, for example, i tend to buy one nude-ish shade and one bold shade), but in general, i have squashed that feeling that i "should" buy other (all?) the shades of a product if i try it and love it. It has really helped curb my spending, and also, i have learned about myself that variety brings me joy more so than owning multiples does. For example, if i have 12 blushes, i would rather have 12 different brands/formulas, than six shades of one product and six of another.

I recently received a $125 gift card for Sephora, so I have been making a ‘fantasy cart’ of things to purchase during the upcoming sale in April. Right now I have the Kosas foundation (because I love the concealer), the ABH stick cream blush in latte, and the Merit lipstick in 1990. I would love to grab the Gucci lip, but I know that would eat up more of my budget than I want. I’m not sure what I will end up buying, but it’s fun dreaming 😁

I love the mixture of passion, analysis, and level-headedness here, Hannah. And here’s another reason not to buy back-ups: that thing you love to death and think you should buy when it’s on sale or throw in to make enough for a Sephora “beauty offer”-my bête noire-might just get replaced by something you like even better. That happened to me, and now I have several eyeliners languishing in my make-up box, unused and probably expiring, mocking me.

I’ve had this happen, and I’ve also developed sensitivities to ingredients, rendering products unusable. I have entire collections of toiletries, bought in bulk, that I can’t use. I will give them away, but I don’t buy in bulk anymore. Maybe 2 at a time, at most.

My boyfriend bought me bitter peach as a birthday present last year, and let me tell you, it's probably my most prized possession. I never thought I would own it and it is truly an incredible fragrance. I keep eyeing lost cherry as well, but I tell myself: you already OWN bitter peach, which is the one you like MORE. And I don't need to own 2 bottles of 400 dollar perfume. Oh also: bitter peach doesn't smell like fruit. It smells like peach without the sweetness; almost full spice. I like sandalwood and vanilla, I like replica jazz club for reference, and I love bitter peach.

I feel that you really nailed it for me when you talked about buying other colours in a lipstick you already own and love. I have done this so many times and have absolutely the same reaction as you! It was a revelation! I never wear the subsequent purchases. I never “really” enjoy the new colours. And usually they end up in the back corner of my makeup drawers. But what a tough mental force it takes to NOT make the purchase. It’s like an addiction that takes days to get out of your mind. Lately I have tried to see if I can try to find something in my stash that shows me why I shouldn’t buy this new treasure. I often love a beige nude without pink that looks horrible with my skin tone. And I have to really stop myself from buying that colour in a brand where the more pinky mauve is really my colour. Thank you for this!!! I will continue to think of your words the next time I want to buy that next colour! 💕

I personally believe that having backups in areas which make sense to you could be a good thing - these would be laundry detergent, washing-up liquid, toothpaste and soap for me. I no longer buy multiple skin and body care products. The hoard I've got now has definitely been stress-induced during the past two years and it will take me at least the same amount of time to use it all up. The only Ford that's ever felt worthy of its external beauty for me has been the Tobacco Vanille. Rich, deep, long-lasting. The other ones have either turned weird and rancid on me, or they disappear entirely inside of an hour -- and if I'm spending $350 on a bottle of perfume, it better not just poof after a few minutes. I had the same exact reaction to the TF Lost Cherry/Bitter Peach situation. I LOVED the packaging, and I mainly wanted them for my perfume collection because of the packaging. I got so close to blind-buying both, but was able to hold off due to how expensive they are. Let me tell you, I'm glad I smelled them in person at a Sephora. I ended up LOVING Lost Cherry. It's utterly unique, totally captivating, has enough nuance to it to not smell like a gross fruity body spray, and works great with my skin chemistry. I wasn't as big of a fan of Bitter Peach (which is a shame because I like that bottle a little more than the Lost Cherry, lol). In the end I still only ended up buying the travel size, and I'm glad I did. Once I finish it, I'll probably pick up a full (ish) sized bottle next time Sephora does a 20% off sale. I completely get the impulse to want to purchase them, but I don't think I've ever totally been happy with a blind-buy perfume. In the end its so much more fun to sample something and wear it for awhile, fall in love with it, THEN buy. Those purchases feel like coming home.

Being honest and very selective has helped me start to buy only the fanciest and amazing products that keep the joy longer. I have never done this exercise of shopping and then not purchasing and shopping my own stash instead. I think physically doing this will be powerful for me. I once, way before the Internet, ordered a bottle of "Barney's Route du Thé" because I read heaps about it I'm glossy magazines over and over. The name just spoke to me, and I pined and pined for it! It smells like harsh detergent. And I could make you a dirty vanilla on a coffee break. I make my own perfumes. It's a journey when it's very much the more you learn about it; the more you know you really don't know ****. But the least knowledgeable can whip up a dirty vanilla. Just add a smidgeon of rectified birch tar.

Hannah following your ethos on backups and general channel *vibe* after almost two years of watching your channel, I decided to do a beauty no buy this year and adopted a similar no backups idea. However, I also wanted to apply the wisdom that the cost of a product doesn’t always equate to that product’s value-especially in skincare (and especially especially in non-active/powerhouse skincare like cleansers, moisturizers etc.). However, as I am in Canada and my pickings are much more slim than in the US for these more affordable options in traditional retail, I often find myself ordering online (ex. Good molecules through beautylish) and that can take weeks to arrive. On top of that, one of my goals with the product was to first work through everything I had even if I didn’t love the product, meaning all my moisturizers (even those not rich enough for Montreal winter) got used up in January and February through layering and other strategies to clear out the beauty drawer and prevent waste. Because of this I don’t have any excess product, even the essentials that can switch to and with new product taking weeks to arrive, it wasn’t feasible for me to replace as things run out (or even when I had a few uses left!). I had tried this for moisturizer, but my parcel with an inexpensive moisturizer was lost and I was forced to go out and spend an addition $15-20 for a moisturizer I didn’t really want (and didn’t buy with INTENTION) while the one I truly wanted was on route! Because of this I’ve adapted my strategy and my rules to allow purchases of essential products (Aka things that exist without any substitute or duplicate) with a few weeks notice. This only applies when other products can tie me over, for example I like to have two moisturizers, one lighter for day and one richer for night (or for example two cleansers, one for skin and one for makeup removal) so if only one has run out and I can substitute in the interim with a product that doesn’t do a great job but is only needed for a week or two, which allows the same experience you say about learning the value of a product in its absence without throwing the delicate balance I try to maintain (acne prone and dehydrated !) with my skincare. And I think the key has been learning what works and adapting with the initial goal (savings and intention!) in mind, because there was nothing intentional about running out of all my hydrating products at once in -20 and having to run out to buy something meh (for $20 I didn’t want to or have to spend!)

Omg good timing this is very helpful for me and my love of creamy and moisturizing lip products (must resist more lip masks)!

I’m absolutely loving your top. Thanks for the good reminder to check my stash before purchasing more makeup, especially with the upcoming sale.

I have that blush. It's not cream(???) I'm sure it says it is. It's so insanely pigmented and it's powder... however, the Item concealer is amazing.

Oh my goodness I was just looking at the Ren over night balm on Sephora before I watched this lol thanks for your thorough reviews. I've been trying to do more research before buying things so that I buy more "wins" and impulse purchases turned useless knick knacks that are just clutter. I'm also trying to save money, so buying stuff that actually works once saves me money and your chanel really helps with that.

I impulsively purchased that Item Beauty Hot Poppy blush today. It’s actually a pretty cool formula. It’s like a cream to powder. I think I was just really in a spring/summer mood… but it’s something out of my comfort zone and it makes for a really cool lip-cheek color when used both ways. I really didn’t need I though, I do have a few poppy blushes and they only get used every so often. Mostly in summer when I have a inkling of a tan. I love this practice of yours and I think I might try to incorporate it whenever I am tempted to shop needlessly.

I also have been feeling pretty compelled by Bitter Peach on and off for a while, but I smelled some Tom Ford perfumes in store one day and felt like they were a little too rich for my blood lol. As someone who frequently makes Sephora carts whenever I’m bored, I thought this was a really cool exercise and I think I might give it a shot next time I feel the itch to buy stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Have you thought about using the yellow face and the blue cheek adjuster from salt new york to make your base products more olive?

So I am going to throw a wrench in your don’t buy…. But the rose Inc skin tint blew my mind. You’re the one who introduced me to the concealer and it is the best color match I have ever found. I was 100% sure that it would be too dark and that I’d hate the formula. And I was so wrong. I don’t know what it does but one pump of this is not only light enough and neutral (?!) but it does something truly magical about ten minutes after application and gets so much better!!! My skin looks amazing. I use it with the concealer under my eyes and in my red T zone and it’s the best skin day ever. No touch ups. Wears forever. So in case you find yourself needing it, you may end up loving it too. Love your channel so much! 😍😘

Merit lip products are top notch! Great video!

I have learned the hard way is that its so much more cost effective and practical to just get the one you want. And if its not available or I don't like the other colours than I don't get it period. I picked up the merit lipstick in slip as I thought it would be the perfect browny nude 90s lip and it is. I was so happy to have it. The formula is wonderful but as I am on a low buy and trying to use some lip products up I know that this is in its own special category and I want to use up some other things so I can appreciate what I have. Perfumes are so hard to gauge which is why I almost never blind buy.

I have the Nars lipgloss in Nympho. I love it. The shade is beautiful. The formula is perfection. I actually am in the market for 2 more similar products, one in coral and one in a slightly peachier, more nude and less taupe shade. They are products I adore and know I will use. Problem is, there are absolutely no other shades in that line that are what I want them to be but I keep going back, in store and online, and looking and half convincing myself to buy one even though I know better.

I held on to my Tom Ford quad for MONTHS even though I never ever ever used it, because of how gorgeous the packaging was. But then I had that come to Jesus talk with myself and gave it away, because the barely there wash of color it gave was just not for me. I love these über practical videos you do!

I still buy backups but only when I am extremely close to finishing that same product. I used to buy backups whenever there was a sale even if the current product I’m using was basically brand new. Your channel has really helped me be conscious about how much I’m buying and the points in time that I am buying things (I.e. do I really need this right now?!). Perhaps I should try your exact method of going without some products for a few weeks before buying back ups

Thanks for the reminder that I have plenty of items to shop for at home! I logged in to Ulta this morning to shop the sale and thought, oh yeah, I have this exact thing I'm about to buy 10 times over. Also, I'm obsessed with your hair in this!!! Can you please show how you did it? I struggle with making updos look full/intentional.

Sometimes it can be so easy to ignore my consumerism tendencies I find with fashion especially. I can hop on a new trend so quickly and then find I don’t even truly enjoy it. Sometimes I make pieces so it helps add a certain value level to my closet Would love to hear your takes on fashion and how you adapt your buying to it! Love your channel 😘

Lost cherry smells like a Bakewell tart and bitter peach smells like a peachy cocktail candle atop might get in a shop like bath and body works. On a note it’s interesting how the perfume trends on social media is affect us all . It’s exactly the way makeup shopping habit changed with the rise of beauty KZbinrs

I'm all about getting a backup or two of the things that I have used for a year or more and intended to use indefinitely. For me, trying new products is the habit I'm working on ending. I don't need new products. I have my products and they do what I need them to

Thanks for another fun video! I had the same experience but with the TF Lost Cherry quad. I put it in my cart so many times, but have (sometimes barely) managed not to press check out so far. It’s the same as your bitter peach journey: the beautiful cherry red packaging does some thing to an otherwise quite boring color story. Plus, the lost cherry quad isn’t even a new color story, TF already brought it to market earlier, called Body Heat. So I could actually compare the beautiful packaging to the regular packaging. That also helped me not purchasing.

Have you ever considered making a makeup face chart/makeup sketchbook? Somewhere you can swatch makeup, or just play around with potential makeup looks, and could smear cream blush all over to your hearts delight?

I don’t buy back ups anymore. What a freeing experience honestly, as freeing as stopping to touch up my roots and …grow my greys out. Now the anxiety has turned to a fun time…like ‘let’s see if I miss it when this is over’. TF perfumes are my drug of choice. But even then only at a time.
