my mum got her period in the 70's as a 15 y.o, and even though she had two older sisters (and obviously surrounded by girls who had theirs) no one had told her about it. she was in a panic for days - stuffing toilet paper in her knickers - and thought she was dying until she finally confided in one of her sisters. So she was VERY motivated to make sure I knew from a young age - and made damn sure my brother got a good education as well. I'm aussie and actually got a decent amount of info on periods etc from family planning through primary school. High school sex ed was pretty shit because it was just done by the P.E teacher (male and horrible).

Especially the PCOS part, as I'm struggling with this for more than 8 years now and here in my country doctors or hospitals won't listen to me when I say it affects my life! I’m really lucky with my period. I have been using a menstrual cup for a couple years now and it’s completely changed my view of my period because it’s so easy to use and I change it a lot less often. I don’t really get any other (noticeable) changes to me or my body on my period (apart from my awful skin!!). Your book tour visit in London is on my 16th birthday!! I would love to come going to look into it. You’re such an inspiration x

I'm currently bleeding from my genitals and have retired to my bed with a hot water bottle and feeling ROUGH. Somehow never remember how absolutely awful it is until it hits. But as I said to the guy I was sleeping with this month, it's a relief. It's strange being grateful for being in so much pain. And the nausea is atrocious too. But it means my body is working okay, well my reproductive bits anyway. I hope! Loved this video! Didn't realise your book was out so soon!! Congradulations and best of luck!

Now that I don't have periods (Jaydess Coil) I do miss it a bit. I liked knowing my cycle and I never minded the blood that much. But then when I used to have them I hated it, the PAIN, the MESS, the FEVER. So, mixed bag? I enjoy that I have them (or, can have them) but I dislike it when they're actually happening? That was a much less simple answer than I expected...

Used to hate my period (esp before discovering taking one ibuprofen before any cramps start can stop the cramps coming to anything at all, after a good 13 years of debilitating cramps on period day one!) but I started to just try to be grateful for my health and thank my body for functioning healthily with the added bonus of it meaning that I'm not pregnant! I feel I have a love hate relationship with my periods. They were heavy and long with excruciating pains when I was a teenager. They've now calmed down dramatically (especially since coming off the pill) but I still feel that at 25 I still don't trust my body when I'm on and admire the gymnasts, swimmers, etc. Who do it all any time of the month!

I always hated my period, especially since tampons and pads are so uncomfortable and when I was younger, I wasn’t aware of any other options. Then I was diagnosed with Endometriosis and I hated them even more due to the unbearable pain that accompanied them. So I took back-to-back contraceptives to stop my periods. Now we want a family so the pill is no more and I’m extremely grateful that I have regular periods, even if I can’t walk for 3 weeks of the month. So I guess how I feel about them has changed quite a bit over the years!

oh man, ya girl haaaaaates her period. It's always given me horrible cramps that have sometimes kept me from sleeping. And the period shits are super real. When I got older and my mental health started declining, my period almost always came with one or two days of extra debilitating depression. I got so sick of having to miss class regularly once a month after I'd finally found medication that helped me NOT be like that the rest of the time. So I started an extended cycle hormonal birth control pill and I love it! I love not having my period nearly as often, and when I go get it, it's much lighter and more manageable.

I´d got my period when I was 10 years old. Sure I knew what it was but when I saw that blood in my panties I freaked out. Cried to my mom and she just told my all about it. Went to buy me some pads and chocolate, so sweet. Had massive period cramps util I was 15 years old when I started on the pill and still have it today when I am 22 years old. The pill really works for the pain. Love to watch your hormone diaries and Im definitely gonna buy your book. I live in Sweden, so I have to order it online. Loves from Sweden!

I started my period at 8/9 and it was the biggest shock, but my primary school handled it really well and my class had a whole lesson on periods and the products in ‘Bryony’s bag’ which was full of pads that the school brought for me to put in the toilet closest to my classroom. Sadly my period causes me a lot of pain and my skin aches and hurts to touch so I’m not a huge fan of it but I do love the idea of the process just not while it feels like my body is trying to attack me aha. Excited for the new book :)

I'm excited for your audiobook! I got a hard copy last time, but I think I'll get this one in audiobook form. :) I knew all about pregnancy before I knew anything about periods, oddly. My mom had my younger brother when I was about 14 months old, and women in my family were having kids each year (and talking about it a lot), so I knew all about the problems with pregnancy in graphic detail by the time I was 5 and pretty much said, nope, I'm never doing that! Lol. I learned all about periods in school when I was in 4th grade from a scientific view. No one ever told me how painful it'd be. I had crippling pain with my periods all my life until I had colon surgery last year, and now my periods don't hurt. (I'm 48 now.) So I always hated having periods, but now it doesn't bother me. I never did have kids, mostly because I'm asexual and just never developed an interest for that side of life. I do love your channel and hearing all about this stuff from you though. It's interesting to learn different perspectives. :)

I kinda "love" my period since I got menstrual cup ( 3+ years ago). It wasn't much of a problem ever, half a day of cramps and back pain, regular painkillers working, and not at all heavy. But since I replaced tampons it's less of a hussle, and I feel lighter, like it's not even there. And no money spent, and bonus for an environment.

You should be really proud of this accomplishment Hannah! My 15th birthday is in two months and I still haven’t got my period, soooo I’m a little confused about how you were saying people are getting their periods younger now 😆 I guess I’ll be super prepared. I also just wanted to mention, it’s not necessarily a great thing to be waiting this long - every one of my friends has had their period and don’t get why I want mine to happen...I guess it’s more about not knowing when it’ll happen that freaks me out a tad. So just if you’re my age and have a friend like me, just try to listen...it’s not as fun as it seems to be the one who hasn’t got it. Anyway, thanks for reading my rambilngs 🥴 I just giggled a little when you said it was for people 15+, so people who’ve had their period for a little while already 😋 sending you a hug, Hannah 😘 I really love your videos 🥰

At 11, almost 12, I was an early bleeder and that is what came as a shock to me. I knew what a period was, but all my YA books were about girls 13+ anxious to finally get their period which is why I never figured it in my cards to start so early. My mental age barrier was 12 at the earliest and I missed it by one month which is why I cried in shock and desperation when I discovered it after getting up from the breakfast table one morning.

boringly, I'm pretty indifferent to my period. I find it a bit of a pain (logistically and physically) but more get frustrated with the guessing game of when it will appear (the joys of irregularity due to stress! we love exams!!) sort of make me wish I didn't have it, but it does give me a week of being more grounded and realising this is MY body so I need to look after it, in terms of how I look after it but also how I treat it in my mind and being kinder to it!

Crippled in pain two days a month from cramps, like, can hardly get out of bed/leave the couch, so no, I don't like it. And thank you for pointing out that not everyone can use menstrual cups, for example if you suffer from vulvodynia and it hurts too much. I love the non-waste goals, but everyone, please don't shame people who need their pads. Ps. I'm on my period right now. And I got a headache from trying to watch this blurry video, until you told me and I realised how stupid I am and that I can just listen to it instead. But this headache and cramps combination sure isn't fun...
@peggyallen326

yup - i dont suffer from vulvodynia or anything like that. But i have mental health problems that get worse when im on my period - i'm so tense i have to force tampons in and often have to use tiny little ones that might only last 30mins. Can't stand pads because of the smell - so i refuse to use the fabric ones. Every one with a period should just use whatever works and support people making their own choices.

I absolutely despise my period when it comes along every month but I rely on it to know that my body is at least functioning properly. For example, ever since I started I've been pretty regular (apart from small shifts here and there), however I've recently started my A Level exams and just before I was to start them, I was late a good 10 days which was pretty strange for my cycle (which I've been logging with Flo for the past 7 months, such a good app). It showed me that something at least was affecting me enough to cause this so made sure to take it easy for the next few days. So I guess I need it, even though I hate it when it does actually come around haha.

I hope to see/hear this in Audible!! ❤️ Do you think you’ll be releasing it there and would you be the narrator because that would be fabulous! Ahhh......never mind, it just isn’t available in the US Audible. 😭

I guess the English version should be available right away, at least around Western Europe. I've preordered it to Switzerland from a Swiss bookshop and did the same thing for Doing It, which came in just a few days after the release date ☺️

I use hormonal contraception to skip my periods every month and have for about 8 years. I'm happy with this routine and every time I miss enough doses to get breakthrough bleeding (no pregnancy scares, I track my fuck ups responsibly lol) or during the 6 month stretch I took a break from the pill I find my quality of life is generally worse with periods. I do feel a little out of step with my peers sometimes since its such a big part of "bleeders'" lives, but since I've been lucky enough to avoid serious symptoms with the pill I don't see any point in inconveniencing myself to commiserate lol.

The last thing you said about girls not knowing what a period is beforehand reminds of the 2013 movie Carrie, based by Stephen King.

I am on relatively good terms with my period. When I first got it I was in the middle of a school play ... so that was ‘fun’.

My period typically only lasts 3 days (always over the weekend 🙄) and it actually doesn’t bother me to much. Especially since I started using a menstral cup! Menstral cups have been a life changer for me. I will never go back to using tampons.

I'm so glad to feel neutral about my period lol. I neither hate it, nor love it. I don't get any PMS or cramps or whatever, so it's just like any other day of the month for me with the exception of when I have to empty my cup, which is 2-3 times for 24 hours.

I don't have periods as I'm using the depo injection for contraception. Generally very happy with this scenario, although I am slightly annoyed that I cant then track my cycle and get to know my hormones/moods etc better, because I have no cycle to track!

I'd feel oddly happy if I was bleeding from my genitals because it would mean that medical science has got to the point where I could do that as a trans woman. That's assuming I'd had SRS / GRS / ~tHe sUrGeRy~, if I hadn't then I would be deeply concerned and go to A&E 😂

I don’t mind my period too much but am on the pill so only have one every 7 weeks or so and can delay it for holidays etc which helps. I’ve also recently made some cloth pads and am kind of pleasantly surprised when they work so have enjoyed getting used to them.

I like having a period, kinda ) sometimes it's annoying when it leaks but overall it makes me feel cozy and justifies not being that productive :) I even enjoy pain but I gotta say that I don't have a severe one.

Here's the thing about coming off the pill causing weight gain: This is more common with oral contraceptives that contain estrogen. The progesterone-only ones tend to cause weight gain when you are on them, not so much when you come off (not oral, but the Depo shot is particularly known for this). So if anyone is concerned about weight gain and has the option to use an estrogen-containing product, you might want to lean that way. (Progesterone-only products are also more likely to cause acne where estrogen products tend to be the ones that may help clear acne, and progesterone-only products can sometimes cause facial hair growth. But sometimes you can't or don't want the estrogen product.) Your comment on people getting their period and not knowing what it is and how "you'd think you're dying," reminded me of Tamora Pierce's first book series Song of the Lioness. The protagonist Alanna was raised by an inattentive father (her mother was dead). Then when she was 10, she and her twin brother were being sent off to their own educational pursuits, and neither wanted the one they were being sent on, so they traded places, and she went to knight school in her brother's place. But girls weren't allowed to be knights, so she had to be in disguise as a boy. As a result, at no point in her life did anyone tell her about periods, and when she got hers, she did indeed think she was dying.
