I was just about to comment that Murder or indeed cannibalism never seemed more socially acceptable than thanks to this show. Human strings..? But of course, they are more expensive, but the quality is unrivalled. Loin? Naturally. Pork, Beef or Human, sir..? Aesthetically pleasing and to an extent, a lifestyle. Which should not make as much sense as it does, come to think of it…

I wonder who the first guy was that woke up one day and said to himself "I wonder what would happen if I made string from an animals intestines and rubbed against it with a stick...."
@brainwasher98766 жыл бұрын
The mongols and huns were the inventors of stringed instruments (or the variation that ended up being the ancestor of modern European string instruments, at least). They often rode horses and ate them to sustain themselves. The climate up there was dry so a lot of dead animals would get dried and stringy quickly, someone probably just figured out hey if we take this and stretch it a bit it makes noise.
@gaearadan33796 жыл бұрын
That's not true. The Mesopotamians and then the Greeks had string instruments from cattle guts from 2500 BC and 1500 BC respectively.

Actually the strings are never made from cat guts. Although "cat gut" strings are made from sheep's guts. The word catgut is derived from the term kitgut or kitstring (the string used on a kit, or fiddle). Misinterpretation of the word kit as referring to a young cat led to the use of the term catgut The more you know.

Several quibbles about this scene: 1. It's not called "catgut" because it's made from cat's guts. "Catgut" is short for "Cattle gut", and it was made from livestock (not cows, but usually sheep). Cats are much too small. 2. Couldn't they hire a real cellist for the practice scene? Are cellists this hard to come by? The guy playing it looks so fake and it doesn't sync up with the audio at all. 3. I can't tell if Tobias is being a prude here, but strings made from gut are simply called "gut strings", not authentic strings. Many, if not most, professional musicians use aluminium, steel, silver wound, or synthetic strings. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. Gut strings produce a warmer sound but are less responsive than most.
@darkjak2248 жыл бұрын
Or maybe you're just petty ;) 1. Get over it 2. A real cellist may be an awkward actor, a real actor can at least give appropriate expressions of his lines, and add the audio later 3. To him they're authentic, because he's fuckin' crazy
@brainwasher98768 жыл бұрын
Ron H The level of maturity in your comment is astounding--in that there is none. The show goes through painstaking lengths to get details accurate in food and forensics, so telling people to "get over it" regarding details in music is idiotic and a waste of your time and mine.

Precisely. Hannibal is a character, which is different from Barnes the actor. The character can have an origin and ethnicity different from that of the actor. Ultimately it comes down to getting the best actor who can play a demanding role in all its intensity. There are many brilliant "actors of color" who have successfully played white Shakespearean roles (such as David Oyelowo as Henry VI, Sophie Okenedo as Queen Margaret of Anjou). "Colorblind" casting is increasingly and successfully deployed in movies, television and theatre as a way to simply to get the best actor available for a demanding role, while re-visioning classic works by embracing the diversity of society and of the audiences watching these shows.
