I suspect a lot of the hate came from over-exposure. People at the time heard this song in the supermarket, on the radio; basically constantly. I am an old guy and, at the time, it wasn't that the song was bad but that I heard it everywhere all the time that led to my avoiding it.

It's a strangely adult looking back with wisdom kind of song written by children. They should win a grammy just for their thoughtfulness.

Have you ever Googled the lyrics to the song? For years I just knew MMMBop. "You have so many relationships in this life / Only one or two will last / You go through all the pain and strife / Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast" -- That's some deep shit, man.

Plenty of hit songs are hits simply because of the artists look, or a gimmick sound, but this was a catchy, well written song from KIDS. And they had real chops . They should be super proud of it and that they stayed healthy and sane through the fame

I love how they still play this because most artists who started as young as they did tend to treat songs that more or less put them on the map (in a way) act as if these songs are some dirty secret of sorts. Like, some tend to look really embarrassed and seemed to just want to forget their older songs.

I’ve always said as Hanson became the band we all recognize now I could care less if they play Mmmbop at their shows (I’ve only been to one where they didn’t) but I really loved Taylor’s explanation. They had a number one song right out the gate and that is how I got to be a fan. I’ve stuck with them through all of it and am so glad that I have. They’re amazing musicians.
