It's fascinating how much we change our routines over time. I was a strict CG girl for the first 3 years of my curly journey. I cowashed all the time but as time went on my scalp got so itchy and my hair got dull, even clarifying shampoo didn't seem to help .Eventually I bought a normal shampoo and used that, oh the bliss of a proper wash for the first time...heaven, squeaky clean hair!! Now I use a normal shampoo and condition followed by a leave in conditioner spray which I never used to use, and then Gel. It's a massive learning curve and it evolves over time as my hair changes. Thanks for sharing your updates.😀👍

I used to not use regular conditioner and always deep condition. I've since found out my hair absolutely does need deep conditioner but I do get lazy sometimes and won't shy away from a regular conditioner if I need to quickly wash my hair. Although next wash I know will be a clarify, bond builder, and deep condition wash day.

One of the best videos I have seen on this. Love knowing the detail of how you have adapted with more knowledge, more experience and analysing those subtle differences. I'm just about 4 months in, and used to think one thing worked at the start, that I now think differently on

I’m watching all the videos because even though I have had wavy curly hair all my life, I have always blown it out and styled it either straight or rolled on curlers. I noticed recently how extremely dry it was though: it didn’t want to get wet even in the shower, not at first. So I bought an inexpensive hair steamer cap and put just regular Curl Talk conditioner on after CT shampoo. It responded well, but sadly I tried a cream, and my curls don’t feel bouncy. I am over 60 now, so aging hair is an issue for me as well. It’s so hard to find what I need to do!

Can I use the word validated 😊 I've always worn my hair curly but pretty much doing it "wrong" .....but not wrong after all! Like any journey, it's trial and error, paying attention and trusting your instinct to dial in what works. Thank you for informative and genuine content ♥️ Long Live the Wonky Curl!

I found that sulfate free shampoo dried out my hair whereas my hair was never dry using shampoo with sulfates. My dermatologist said there is nothing wrong with sulfates, it's just fear mongering and heat styling is what dries hair out. I have to use sulfates to get my scalp clean.

One of the newer things I've added to my routine is brush styling. I used to solely use a wide tooth comb but I've been enjoying the Pattern shower brush to detangle. I also like to use a brush to style my hair as it gives a nice result. I will try the hair oil tip to glaze it over the nape as that's where my hair gets knotty. Thanks for the video!

Holy Swearword!!! Hanz, this is the most incredibly informative hair video I have ever seen! I thought I was just about there with my fine curly hair after months of trying new things I even managed to refresh on day 4 for the first time. However, I now realise what has cocked my curls up this week. I deep conditioner at the weekend. My hair is soft like yours but gets some dry feeling frizz on some bad layering which I am growing out. I deep conditioned at the weekend and my hair has been a wreck ever since. I don't think my hair needed it now I see this video. I also tested out a heat protectant, a very moisturizing one so I have doubly over done things. I am going to reset tomorrow & wash it. For the record, my hair also likes light conditioner & strong but not overly sticky gel. My hair hates hard water but I use Malibu C Hard Water Wellness shampoo & conditioner which my hair adores. It is gentle but gets rid of any build up. I can no longer co-wash. My hair is low porosity, like you. I have very few split ends & my hair rarely tangles. I take my shampoo down my hair like you. My hair likes some drying alcohol too!!! I actually use a little Impulse Body Spray on my hair on refresh days. Malibu Breeze Coconut Crush smells amazing! I do occasionally use a little protein. I diffuse on high heat & speed but my hair dryer is not that harsh. I have the Bellisima Diffon. I never let the bowl touch my hair either & only ever hover diffuse. I use argan oil on my ends at night. My hair likes that. I think I will give brush styling another go once my hair feels like itself again. I got overwhelmed with the disaster my hair has been this week. This video has made so much sense to me, I need to have it to play on a loop! 😃 Thank you so much!! Xx

Thanks for sharing! It seems like we get an idea that we HAVE to stick to some schedule or routine but honestly whatever our hair needs is what we should give it. And whatever makes us feel happy and healthy 😊 I’ve stopped using SOOOOO many products because my hair has changed a lot with pregnancy and postpartum, it was so hard and scary at first but now it’s so healthy and soft because I stopped using all those products. Water, gentle cleansing, natural oils, and ACV rinses occasionally is all I need now. I don’t even use conditioner anymore 🙊

Could you do a video on all grit products you like? I have very soft fine short 3a-3c hair. I’m having problems with my awesome hair being full of volume curls popping when I leave the house, but when I get a glimpse of myself later or get home it has fallen and it’s no longer full of volume popping curls. Just defined saggy curls.

Right about the proteïn :) There are two things one sh, ould know: the use and/or the amount of proteín depends in the first place if hair is damaged or not. (colored hair, heat styled, exces.sun exposure etc) Damaged hair is in need of a certain amount of proteïn, while the proteín in products form a film on the damaged parts. On the other hand there are people using proteín while they don't have damaged hair, they use the proteïn to "balance out moisture-proteïn"... but actually if that is necessary it's key to take a look at the moisture level...to reduce the amount and/or type of moisture it probably isn't necesary to incorporate proteín on their healthy hair. In other words... the proteïn often is used to reduce the effects of too much moisture that is used at that same moment.

Thanks Hanz ❤ I love hearing the updates on what’s working/not working for you. I’m 3-4 months into wearing my hair curly and I’m only just starting to get comfortable with what works for me. I find many of the things you do/don’t do work the same for my hair. Plus with the season change sending us into Autumn here in Melbourne I’ve had to work out how to manage my hair all over again so seasonal suggestions are always helpful thank you 🙏🏻

would you ever be open to doing a product review on XMONDO's Wavetech line? I've been using his brand but my natural curls don't come out in juicy clumps, it's honestly kind of scraggly, I don't know if that's from having color treated hair or because his brand doesn't do the job :/

Always love your content! 💖 My hair is very similar to yours! I also didn't use oil for a very long time, but my hair really likes HOLD too and the oil is really nice to scrunch out the crunch and leave everything shiny / fluffy instead of frizzy after scrunching. The curlsmith bonding oil is sooo light it very much disappears once applying instead of being heavy/sticky. What is inside that Bounce oil bottle?? I also never stopped using a brush, but I ONLY use it when detangling in the shower with conditioner and it really helps, I'll have to see your brush styling technique 🥰 But most importantly and most unrelated.. what is your plant friend there? 🙏😂

I used to deep conditioned for 30 minutes, thinking that's what I had to do. Now, I know my hair is healthy and don't need that, so I'll be just doing 5 minutes too, until I use it up and no more after that.

Can I ask your opinion on hardhold gels? You mentioned you like using it as your last styler. Can hardhold gels also be considered more of a moisture gel or a protein gel? I'm confused about these types of gel as some of them do contain protein as well, but it seems most just use them for hold?🤷‍♀️
@hanzcurls
@hanzcurls Жыл бұрын
A gels purpose is to add hold so try not to think of it in terms of moisture and protein. Even with curl creams, for example, their main purpose is to add moisture, but if it contains protein it wouldn’t stop it from adding moisture, would just have some benefits of protein.
@corneswartz2774
@corneswartz2774 Жыл бұрын
@@hanzcurls thanks so much! I understand that most products have moisture. I have very fine hair and mostly style with a leave-in and gel, and one of the 2, the gel or leave-in have a bit of protein, because my hair needs it and I try to keep it balanced. But if a gel is just there for hold , is it better then to always use a leave-in with a bit of protein and any gel? Does the protein in a gel benefit my hair at all or not? 🤦‍♀️
@hanzcurls
@hanzcurls Жыл бұрын
@@corneswartz2774 it will be down to trial and error with gels with and without protein to see how it affects your hair. Hair is porous so product will go into your hair, but if you’re applying a curl cream before the gel then that will be the first product to be absorbed. However, smaller proteins (as mentioned in my protein moisture balance vid) may be able to penetrate your hair more, or if your hair is higher porosity it will have more gaps to fill.

In the 2 1/2 yrs, when I started caring for my natural wavy/curly hair, I too was doing or not doing all those things you mentioned. The thing I learned about my hair, is that it's actually healthy. One time I used a heavy protein curl cream & my hair reacted real bad. I found out what angry frizz looked like then. So, I rinsed it out and used a hydrating leave-in and it was happy. Like you, since my hair is healthy & low porosity, I also use little curl cream. I no longer cowash. I just used up what I had, just to get rid of it. I too love a lathering shampoo. I used to clarify & deep conditioned weekly & leave the deep conditioner on for 30 minutes, with a heated cap. I'm sorry I got the heated cap.

You said that your hair is low porosity but also that it loves protein? How does that work because I feel like my low porosity hair wants more protein (can be a bit too limp and soft) but using protein products just makes it dry and crunchy! Make it make sense 😂
@hanzcurls
@hanzcurls Жыл бұрын
If your hair is fine and low porosity it may need more protein for structure. I realised that my hair doesn’t really need as much protein as I thought it did or as it previously did. But have a watch of my protein moisture balance video as that explains why fine hair may need protein and the types of proteins to look for. However also bear in mind the limp and softness could be from simply using too many moisturising products as mentioned in this video and my rebalance overmoisturised hair video.

@@hanzcurls Thank you for replying this is so helpful! I've definitely been laying off the conditioning products recently which helps to an extent but my curls are still much looser and undefined than they used to be. Protein products just seem to 'sit' on my hair and not do anything. I'll definitely check out your other video now, thank you again! 😘
