This video hit home regarding if you have an emergency on the road. I fell off of a ladder 2 weeks ago while trying to replace one of the awnings on our 5th wheel. We're now staying at a month to month RV park outside of El Paso where I'm being treated and will be here until I can walk again. The campground where I fell and the month to month rv park were very helpful and it was amazing how our neighbors at the campground where I fell rallied around us and supported us. Breaking leg and ankle wasn't fun, but it's so cool to see people helping us. It restores one's faith in humanity.

I was an over the road truck driver. I now drive a spotter truck (yard truck) at a paper mill in SC. I have been doing this for over 15 years now. 5th wheels NEED to be checked every time you hook up the jaws that hook around your king pin are only part of the equation. There is a locking mechanism that drops down over the jaws that stops them from opening back up. The jaws can hold a certain amount of force without the lock being in place. That would allow you to do a tug test and still not be completely secure to the 5th wheel. The locks get gummed up if you’re using grease and sometimes rust if not. ALWAYS inspect the 5th wheel after hooking up before the tug test.

Another thing is roll up the landing legs up off the ground just a tiny bit, then do a tug test where the engine starts loosing rpms. You have just put alot of force to see if it's hooked good, and if it's not, the landing gear will catch the trailer before damage accrues to the tow vehicle.

We found it much better to let our house go when we hit the road FT. We live very cheaply on the road and maintaining a house was far too expensive a proposition for us. For example, we boondock most of the time, (living free or nearly so "dispersed camping" on BLM and FS land) but when we do stay in RV parks we choose very inexpensive ones. Right now, we are wintering over in a nice RV park in Los Indios, TX (near Brownsville) that's only $170/mo. (plus electricity which typically is under $100/mo. in our well insulated MH) if we stay here all winter. It costs even less if we were to live here year-round. This is less than 1/2 of just the property tax we had to pay in our S&B house in rural Louisiana. Plus, there are other problems with leaving your house unoccupied for long periods while you are away. Our insurance policy said that if we were away for home for over a month and something happened to it like fire or storm damage, they would not pay leaving us essentially uninsured. Then there's the problem with squatters taking over and tearing everything up. Some rent their homes out through Air B&B, but you need someone there to manage and inspect the property, perform cleaning, repairs and maintenance to make it just not worth it unless your home is in a tourist area where you can keep it rented for a high price. When we finally decide we're too old to keep traveling we'll just park our MH in a nice, inexpensive senior RV park like this and hang up the keys. Get a Motorhome and you won't have to worry about a "pull test." BTW, we bought a 20yr old, National Tropical Class A with only 26k miles for only $15k. We tow an economy car we already owned, so we only had to buy a used hitch and a base plate and installed them ourselves. Living this lifestyle is the best financial decision we ever made. We live for less than 1/3 of what we used to in our old S&B house and live a lifestyle that's incomparable to how we used to live in a fixed place where we had to watch every penny as we were house poor. We tour the country from coast to coast every year, staying in some of the most beautiful places imaginable. We eat whatever we want and eat out whenever we like (we love sushi, which isn't cheap) and do so on our meager social security retirement and a small pension. Our credit rating is the highest it's ever been, and we have plenty of money in the bank for emergencies. Life is good. Here are some of our secrets. Pay cash, buy used (let someone else pay the depreciation) buy high quality, low mileage, but older. Be willing to learn about your RV so you can work on it and upgrade it yourself. Why not, it's fun! Find inexpensive RV parks or boondock. Utilize discounts like the America the Beautiful pass (great for 1/2 price COE and FS campgrounds too). Join Escapees or FMCA (we're members of both.) Some like campground memberships like TT, but we do not. We had a Passport America membership but never used it so let it expire. Some use Harvest Host or Boondockers welcome, and while they have advantages, we don't use them either. We never pay nightly commercial RV park rates - only monthly RV park rates, overnight at Interstate rest areas, Walmarts, Casinos, Cracker Barrels, etc. when we boondock we stay 2 weeks at a time before moving a short distance (usually 50-100 miles) before boondocking again. We utilize Gas Buddy, Campendium and Free Campsites.net, Allstays and a few others - as well as google maps for trip planning and to find free dump stations/fresh water.) We also stay at free city and county parks too - some with hookups and some without that allow longer stays. Use solar to reduce/eliminate generator when boondocking. Our WiFi is through FMCA, for streaming and TV but there are other good providers out there that don't charge an arm and a leg. You need reliable, unlimited internet access to research everything you don't know - which is most things.

I'm in my early 70's and my wife is late 60's. We decided on a single axle TT fully contained with solar and amenities. We needed enough room for our 2 small furkids and 1 larger furkid (55 lbs). It is perfect for us and love going to small campgrounds like county parks. I do the driving and backing in but we plan to have her learn in a large lot soon as you never know what life brings you. We decided to rent out our house as well. HOWEVER, we had previously installed an RV pad on our property when we still lived there. It has everything we need to live there, if need be. We had a 50amp service installed and a remote water connection. and we can macerator our wast to the sewer cleanout, as needed. Then the lease, we had drawn up for the rental included amendments for our use, as long as we may need, with caveats and agreements on accomodations for elevated electric and water costs. We have had to exercise our rights a few times and have never had an issue. Of course we have all our bills sent through our bank account and/or have them delivered electronically. And something I learned from driving semi truck for years, is to ALWAYS do your pull check with the landing gear in a position to catch the trailer if the connection comes loose. Not a lot, but enough to keep it from damaging your tow vehicle.

Hey to the people who wonder about their physical ability remember “if you stop moving your going to stop moving”. Just move at your own pace and the way you want👍🏻a class C is very easy and comfortable to drive for beginners that’s why they rent so many. We are 62 and drive a View and it’s sooooo easy to deal with but lots to consider and check out, dive in full speed ahead and have fun, life is short 😊

For the tug test question, go with a Reese Goose Box instead of a 5th wheel pin box. With a goose ball the connection is secure when you drop on so no tug test is needed.

Awesome topic! Thanks for doing this. Since I live in Texas I thought I’d clarify the issue brought up related to warranty work. First of all, if a dealer has a franchise to sell and service Grand Design, they can do warranty and non-warranty work on Grand design no matter where the unit was purchased. If they only sell and service Grand Design and someone with a Van Leigh needs warranty work they can’t do the warranty work unless their franchise license includes Van Leigh. So, a dealer that says they can’t do warranty work on your rig because you didn’t buy the RV from them even though they sell and service that line of RV’s is bullshitting you. They just don’t want to deal with the hassle of getting paid at a lower rate than they get paid for non-warranty work. So it’s a dealer decision not the law.

We were 68 and 72 and have been RV’ing since late 70’s. Went from Pop Up to Class C to Pull Behind. It became more difficult for us to setup/breakdown. We sold our RV in May when I started having more issues with my Mieneres. The condition made it difficult to feel safe towing since frequent eye movement can increase the likelihood of a spell. We have camped several times since Renting a unit in Myrtle Beach twice and cabins at state and federal parks. Next year at Myrtle we are renting a Villa which gives us better accessibility options and are very close to where our RV’s have been. Since we have handicap papers the campground allows us a golf cart rental,extra, which makes access to the beach easier. My point is there are ways to continue after selling that allow you to continue enjoying camping. B

Really loved this video and the setting!! Two of my favorite channels! We have camped all of our married lives, going back to childhood for me, and are currently looking forward to our retirement rig. We are going to go Ford Super Duty and a fifth wheel. While probably not full timing, it will be very long stretches of travel. We want to see more of this beautiful country and as many National Parks as we can while we are still able. We are now down to 5 years or less before hanging up our working gear. Although not newbies, I enjoy each episode with content like you folks put out and love the information. Medical wise, two years ago I had a partial retinal detachment in my right eye, and the campground I was at, as soon as they heard about it, not only stepped up and found me someone to drive me to and from surgery, but also people to handle my groceries as for 6-8 weeks I had to keep my head in a to-ground position. Finally, they gave me a substantial (80%) discount to their monthly rates for the time spent there.

Another amazing video and great topics. I liked to share my experience with children meeting friends at a RV campground. A couple came up to me while DJing a wedding and asked if I would DJ at their newly purchased campground. I immediately said, "Sure". The location was a couple of hours away from my home, so it was not a easy trip to and from. The event turned out to be terrific. Everyone enjoyed themselves, including all the kids. The campground owners were very pleased and booked my services for four times a year for more than ten years. Over that time, I got to know all the kids by name seeing them growing up year after year. As parents got to meet up with their RV friends, the kids did too.

Great point on socialization of kids. We are not full timers, but we homeschooled when our kids were growing up and similarly, we had lots of people tell us that our kids were great at speaking with all different ages of people (they did not shy away from speaking with adults). They received lots of opportunities for socialization with all the different activities available through our local homeschool group. I imagine it would be much the same for kids who are in a full timing family. You are offering them so many life experiences and a wealth of knowledge not available to kids who do not travel. They learn to think/evaluate/judge for themselves in a way they would not receive in a traditional public school setting. If we had young kids today, it would certainly be a consideration for us. We camped in rural Montana w 3 couples that have rv'd together for many years w kids growing up until now in their later 70's. They used small class c or possibly a b and a small trailer each using what they were comfortable. They booked it up and out of the campground before we did in the am for their next stop. They were class acts in knowing how to caravan as a group in what worked for each one.

RE: 90 degree waste hose elbow - Make sure you clock the elbow so the weight of the hose tightens the bayonet mount (clockwise) instead of releasing it (counter-clockwise).

Google maps for scouting ahead! Between satellite view and street view you can get a great idea of what stations will work best. I've got a 34' travel trailer so it really reduces the stress level to have a primary and backup set for each segment where I know I shouldn't have too much trouble getting in and out. Loves, TA, and Sheetz are almost always good bets, Flying J with RV lanes are generally good choices, as are many Pilot stations, however about half the truck stops have horrible access on the car side for large rigs so don't just assume they will work.

Great fireside chat. Very interesting! Regarding your discussion of #3 the 90-degree on the Stinky Slinky coming loose while dumping and spilling black water contents all over: if you have the Rhino system, the 90-degree elbow at the sewer end has locking lugs (like a bayonet mount) that lock into the threaded sewer connector required at all RV Parks. Align the lugs and slots on the two halves, push in until it seats evenly (don't force it) and twist clockwise until snug (not gorilla-grip tight). It should go together easily. Because the threaded part is already installed in the sewer opening, the set up isn't going anywhere during a dump. As for cleaning up a spill, carry some clumping cat litter or other absorbent and sweep up the mess once the nastiness is absorbed and dispose of in a plastic bag and put in the trash.

If the driver gets sick and can't drive, this is a great group of people that can help. There are many groups on FB that I have seen. People have helped others when that happened. I think I could see my family more, I would just stay there for a few days in their driveway or a close campground. I am happy to hear y'all will be wanting kids in the future. Y'all will make great parents. We have 4 kids and love it! They are grown now but we are still close. So much fun around the dinner table, sports, or what ever we were doing, even stick ball haha.

Hey guys! Rhett and Shannon( travel Nurses) here with a quick comment. Great video to night! We currently use T mobile home 5G wifi in our rig and it works great! I'm on line daily finishing up my DNP and we always have streaming tv and music and gaming going on. It's not listed for rv use, but hey it's just an "off label use". Good video y'all! I am a retired fire department officer. There is a thing called water hammer that occurs when a valve is opened or closed suddenly. If you SLOOOOWLY open and close your valves you can mitigate the problem of the sewer hose jumping or flexing or pressure against a directional change like a 90 degree fitting. Happy camping.

As far as kids go. I know my sons when we spent Covid full time camping in a tent all the kids had no issues going a playing with other kids in the campground. The other kids there are experiencing the similar things yours are. They just want to go have fun, ride a bike a play with the other kids. Even my oldest at home who is the most awkward kid I’ve ever seen had no issues finding kids to play with.

i am a solo female pulling a 20 ft Airstream. My truck takes gas. I use Allstays app frequently to find places to fuel up on my route. It also has images or you can google it and zoom in to see if the lot will work for your rig.

Fantastic video guys!! Hope Tara is well. My husband & I have been full timing for over 2 years now and we had all the same concerns. We already had a seasonal site in NJ and decided to keep it and home base here during the season. Our families, friends and doctors are here so it makes it a lot easier and we travel during the winter. So far that has been working well for us. We also have a gas truck and use our Good Sam at Pilots and Flying J's....we particularly love Flying J's. Thank you for this awesome and informative video!! Safe travels!

Gas Buddy is good for finding stations and prices for gas and gives you at least 5 cents a gallon which is better than nothing. We have an ExxonMobil card and they offer 10 cents and they are pretty much everywhere. For us non full timers who stay regional for now our local places usually have some sort of discounts. Up her In Maine, Irving and Cumberland Farms both offer discounts, with Cumbie's being app based and Irving swiping a card. Both are 10 cents discount with Irving offering an extra 10 cents of for every 50 gallons pumped. Irving tends to be more RV friendly for the size of the facilities. Carrying an extra 5 gallons in the tow vehicle can get you out of a jam also.

To expand on the law Chad was talking about: I was told it only applies to warranty work and that it has to be a dealer that sells whatever make and model you have. I had a section of underbelly fall off due to a water leak. Heartland approved a mobile rv tech to come repair it under warranty. Heartland paid the tech directly.

Love these fire side chats. Great informational series. The three/four of you are a good team to answer questions at different levels. Please tell Tara i hope she feels better soon. Quick road story. We had stayed in a beautiful campground Near Niagra Falls (Four Mile Creek) and were in line to dump. The 2 ladies in front of us were on their first girls trip and had never done all the functions that their husbands do. They were at the dump station and my guess did not use the 90 or the adaptor.... Yep!! you guess it....everywhere. I was just about to go help them when they pulled out their fresh water hose and hooked it to the non-potable. At that point i moved to the other station.

Regarding age for full timing, I'm 77, been full timing for 23 years and at this point we have no intention of stopping. Of course I'm in decent shape but like all 77 year olds I do have a few health issues. I just slow down and do what I can. We both drive our 40' pusher and also tow a car.

OMYGOSH I laughed so hard when you mentioned family folks wanting you to come inside and use their bedroom etc.!!!!! We had the same issue on a trip to TX to stay in the driveway of sister-in-law. She stayed at mother-in-law's house so that we could use her house, insisted that we use her bathroom (that was actually a decent idea, since there was no hookup), but basically insisted we should move into her house during the visit. Of course, we did not. We are not full-timers, but when we're on the road, our beloved Elinor is our HOME, and we love "roading" with her. We chose traveling this way because it is SO comfortable and so easy to just stop anywhere and enjoy, and it's fun, and it gives you a great sense of independence, and it's a great learning experience, and you can visit an infinite variety of types of places, and and and and and. And we love our tiny little bedroom. I just think it's hilarious the way people think you must be uncomfortable and wish to be staying in their house!!!!!

Before the pull check on your 5th wheel, always examine your connection by looking at the locking jaws and verify the handle is fully retracted. Double check, triple check gives peace of mind

I have 5,500,000 miles trucking, for safety when you stop, set trl brake them pull and put tension on hitch and set tow vehicle break. You can't separate with tension at all

I retired from the trucking industry after 35 years in the maintenance end of it and seen drivers do a pull test and high hook the fifth wheel on the front of the plate and when you pull it acts like it is hooked up when you turn or go uphill, it will slide off to one side so when you are doing your Pull test, do a push back test as well.

Regarding Kids and Socialization, (our kids are older and not all with us on the road) there are clubs, like "Full Time Families" they have meetups, events, and many of those families end up traveling similar paths if they click, Nate and Marissa from Less Junk More Journey belong to that, and we have met people that are part of it, and it has helped them a lot with kids on the road.

Our first two choices for gas are Costco & Sam's Club. After that it is gas buddy. I was so happy when you guys finally put your cans down. I know they were empty, LOL!

Great Video!! Love all the answers to the questions. But, I do have to comment on the Gate Guarding that was mentioned towards the end. When you gate guard an oilfield the pay is only like 180 bucks a day. You are gate guarding 24/7. One person works 6am to 6pm and the other person words 6pm to 6am. Yes it does take two people. The conditions are terrible. Usually you are sitting on dirt. Or Mud if it rains. Dusty when it is dry and muddy when it is wet. You are supplied with a black tank for dumping and a generator and fresh water. The trucks are coming and going all day and all night. You have to check them in and out. Your RV will get filled with dust. My Sister and Brother in law thought it would be a great job for 6 months. After 2 months they called it quits. They have to replace the carpeting in their RV. I don't think they ever got all the dust and dirt out of it. Anyway....my two cents worth.

Having a home base is a concern, so we bought a 25 acre homestead in East Texas, gave our daughter and her husband an acre to build a house on and to help watch over our homestead when we are gone RVing. BTW... if you ever find your self in East Texas and need a place to boondock, give us a shout.
