I have turned my 6 year old niece into a huge, huge bat fan, she loves watching the vids (I have got a list of vids that are suitable for her) She picks out all the Megabattie vids and knows Megabattie is Meg and that Maggie helps Meg with the rescue pups. She tells me which bats are the fruit bats and which ones are the micros, what they eat and last week told me what a spat was, she is now learning the different flying foxes. Meep is her 'best bat' and when her 8 year old sister said she wanted a bat as a pet, gave a very good talk on why bats are wild animals and cant be pets. She also informed me, in a very serious manner, that when I die when I'm an old lady (I'm 41) she wants me to give her all my bat jewellery, which amused me.

I'm so pleased your niece is a fan. What is her name? Im also very excited that she knows bats aren't pets, and that you (as an old lady, who will probably die soon) have value in your batty jewellery. Well done on being an awesome and batty aunt.

I think it's my last happy vid to put up, so all I have now is death and since today was pretty full on with the rescues from yesterday (60 plus microbats from the Central Coast), I am way way behind. I just got my editing computer back and for 2 days I haven't been able to transfer and sort out the footage (which is what you do before you can edit it). A successful season with many saved lives. Pretty cool how these creatures can be raised by humans without imprinting and be perfectly ready for the wild when eaches time comes.
@Megabattie2 жыл бұрын
They do imprint but if you do it right and creche the babies at 12 weeks or when they're emotionally ready, they feralise up and are perfect for release. The trick is to let them grow up and become more independent in the same time frame as they'd do this in the wild. So around 3 months old, they're flying a bit and they're socialising with the other babies in the colony and becoming more adventurous, whilst running back to mum if they get upset. If you mimic how it is in the wild, the babies become independent. If you don't let them grow up and keep them bonded to you they don't do well and aren't releasable. When the hand raised babies are 3 months old, they go into a creche, where they join other orphans and form a group. They learn batty etiquette and how to live in a batty society. They shrug off their human mums and want to be with the other batties. When they are emotionally and physically ready, and uninjured, and around 4-5 months old, they’re put into a release cage under a colony and they can integrate into the colony and fly out with the wild bats. If they can’t find enough food, they can always come back to the cage for a feed. Support feeding is put up on the outside of the cage for as long as they are coming back and eating it. When the colony flies out for winter, they have fully integrated and fly out with them.

She weighs about 120 grams here; she does tiny poos and it's easily cleaned up and they don't smell bad. She doesn't need nappies. INFORMAL•AUSTRALIAN an entertainingly eccentric person; a character. "your father must have been a bit of a dag" 3.
