Only just heard the original John Kongos version!! I never knew until this week that this song was a cover version.

It kinda shows just how far ahead of his time (1971) Kongos was! The Mondays gave the song a re-tread, with loads of respect for the original, and produced a Madchester anthem from it. Superb synchronicity!

This gives me strong _Stone Roses_ vibes.

You mean Stone Roses gives you a strong Monday’s feel 🙄🙄🙄 Monday’s were around long before the Roses were even w thing. They, (as did most Madchester bands), followed the Monday’s onto that big bright Manchester stage that the Monday’s left for them.

Track has lyrics that are full of metaphorical references challenging the notion of power and manipulation. The verses present a critique of a manipulative leader who is symbolized as a "rainmaker" with "golden plans" who aims to usurp the "promised land" of others, with promises of God on his side. The chorus warns that this manipulative figure can impose his will on others, making them forget their identity, making them forget they are "a man." The phrase "Step on you again" used in the sample break emphasizes this power dynamic where the manipulative figure continually asserts their power and influence over others. The line "You're twistin' my melon man" is used to express how the manipulator is playing with the singers' mind, controlling them with their words and behavior. The song serves to warn against the dangers of giving too much power to manipulative leaders and emphasizes the importance of being aware and standing up to them.
