RIP Anne Waychoff, loved and missed "Mom" of the Nightwish Army. This was her favorite song and she is always remembered when it is played. There is an extended version of this, created by the Nightwish Arena, that includes the poetry that Tuomas wrote in the style of Walt Whitman. Song of Myself is the title of a poem by him. If you get a chance, that extended version is well worth the listen.

Hello again! I liked your interpretation regarding "the change from G to E minor", and I think that was Tuomas' intention. In the studio album, there is also a poem at the end called "Love" recited by the band members and members of their families, corresponding to the lyrics displayed on the screen. I am convinced that you will enjoy reading the lyrics. This song has a strong meaning for Nightwish fans, because it was the favorite song of the late Ann Waychoff, who dedicated the last years of her life to the promotion of the band she loved, Nightwish. She used to welcome the new reactors in the comments with a short history of the band, and often suggested this song to them for a future reaction. When she was hospitalized and could no longer continue, her absence was immediately felt, so after consulting with other fans, I continued to post the message on her behalf. Because her presence in the comments always had a positive effect, she being a real island of gentleness and delicacy in the middle of an unleashed ocean of fans who often came into conflict. In her memory, fans made video montages of this live performance and the poem from the studio album ("extended editions") first when Ann was in the hospital, then a few years later, when she left us.

This song is a tribute to the poem in 52 chapters, One for every week of the year, " Song of myself " by Walt Whitman 1819-1892.(one of the co-founders of US poetry). The 7th line of the song is ""Of mermaids, of Whitman's and the Ride""". The extended official studio version of this song has, at the end, a poem as a tribute to Whitman made by Tuomas, the keyboard player and the mastermind of nightwish. These lines you can also see fast flahing on the ledscreen of the video you just saw. Bucle up, it goes very deep. " I see a slow, simple youngster by a busy street With a begging bowl in his shaking hand Trying to smile but hurting infinitely Nobody notices I do, but walk by An old man gets naked and kisses a model-doll in his attic It's half-light and he's in tears When he finally comes his eyes are cascading I see a beaten dog in a pungent alley He tries to bite me All pride has left his wild drooling eyes I wish I had my leg to spare A mother visits her son, Smiles to him through the bars She's never loved him more An obese girl enters an elevator with me All dressed up fancy A green butterfly on her neck Terribly sweet perfume deafens me She's going to dinner alone That makes her even more beautiful I see a model's face on a brick wall A statue of porcelain perfection beside a violent city kill A city that worships flesh The first thing I ever heard Was a wandering man telling his story It was you, the grass under my bare feet The campfire in the dead of the night The heavenly black of sky and sea It was us Roaming the rainy roads Combing the gilded beaches Waking up to a new gallery of wonders every morn Bathing in places no-one's seen before Shipwrecked on some matt-painted island Clad in nothing but the surf Beauty's finest robe Beyond all mortality we are Swinging in the breath of nature In early air of the dawn of life A sight to silence the heavens I want to travel where life travels Following its permanent lead Where the air tastes like snow music Where grass smells like fresh-born Eden I would pass no man, no stranger, no tragedy or rapture I would bathe in a world of sensation Love, Goodness, and Simplicity (While violated and imprisoned by technology) The thought of my family's graves was the only moment I used to experience true love That love remains infinite As I'll never be the man my father is How can you "just be yourself" When you don't know who you are? Stop saying "I know how you feel" How could anyone know how another feels? Who am I to judge a priest, beggar, whore, politician, wrongdoer? I am, you are, all of them already Dear child, stop working, go play Forget every rule There's no fear in a dream "Is there a village inside this snowflake?" A child asked me "What's the color of our lullaby?" I've never been so close to truth as then I touched its silver lining Death is the winner in any war Nothing noble in dying for your religion For your country For ideology, for faith For another man, yes Paper is dead without words Ink idle without a poem All the world dead without stories Without love and disarming beauty Careless realism costs souls Ever seen the Lord smile? All the care for the world made Beautiful a sad man? Why do we still carry a device of torture around our necks? Oh, how rotten your pre-apocalypse is All you bible-black fools living over nightmare ground I see all those empty cradles and wonder If man will ever change I, too, wish to be a decent manboy But all I am Is smoke and mirrors Still given everything, may I be deservin And there forever remains That change from G to E minor. The _Imaginaerum_ album tells a story of an old man looking back on his life, and it's beautifully and poetically told. As a result it is more than the sum of its parts and bears many relistens, finding new things all the time. The _Imaginaerum_ movie tells a slightly different story, of an old man with dementia - I thoroughly recommend watching it, but not before you've done _Slow_ _Love_ _Slow_ live at Montreaux Jazz Festival. If you have had loved ones with dementia bring tissues, it has me sobbing every time.

This song is inspired by a famous poem of the same name from the 1850's by Walt Whitman. Yes Teck. It is a metaphor for life. We start in G and end up in E minor. Due to the progression of each of our lives. The irony is they are still the same notes painted on a different soundscape. You got it. This was towards the end of the 90 minute show. I like this song so much. I was hoping you'd get to it soon. Two things about Jukka's drum part that stand out to me are (1) how he plays a "4/4" rhythm over the 7/4 parts in the versus and adjusts every few measures, and (2) those ride bell hits he does around the 8:50 mark mainly because they sound cool, but also because he doesn't repeat them. I can't fully explain why I like the latter reason so much, but it's like he really thought those out and that's the only place he thought they should go.

Perfume of the timeless is awesome 🤘🏻 But here's Song of Myself. Love this song so much. "Sometimes the sky/ within is piano black" - Bad things are happening/ I feel depressed and music is the only way to get to it and deal with it. "Piano black over cleansing water" - water is my place of origin (of the ocean born), where my innocence is and my childhood happiness. This is literature.
@L3onOfKings7 ай бұрын
You said 'come on in, the water is fine', which instantly reminded me of a Nightwish song 'How's the Heart?' The lyric is "Come in, the fire's warm". I recommend it, as I would ALL of Nightwish music. There are 2 versions worth checking out, the official video and an acoustic duet with Floor and Troy. I suggest doing them in the same video. In regards to the lyrics on the rear screen, Song Of Myself was from the Imaginaerum album and used in the movie of the same name which Nightwish released in 2012. One of the character's name was Gem ( G - Em) and the film dealt with an age range from little boy to old man. This would explain your understanding of the music having such a contrasting range when analysing G to E minor. Innocence & young to dementia & old, which is what the film deals with. Give it a watch if you can find it. Tuomas has used the idea about the loss of innocence & wonder in his music frequently.

Hi Matt... No 2 in my favourites list. Marco is superb - I love his second entry (the rising gliss) so much I extracted it and have it as my ringtone. Favourite parts: Piano Black , and particularly the best description of depression I've heard - "sometimes the within is piano black". Piano black - that deep glossy black that almost evades the eye. Emppu holding that long note one-handed as he drinks a Corona. The unexpected pauses (rests) towards the end, particularly, in this performance, when Floor turns her hands upwards and the flames seem to come from her palms. Great chuggy rhythms in the breakdown. Little pizzicato string sections in the run-up to that ending. At the end the lead vocals use the same lyrics as the choir are singing in the earlier parts - "All that great heart lying still and slowly dying All that great heart lying still on an angelwing". That lyric is perfect for the staccato rhythm. ...and lots more To understand the album Imaginaerum you should watch the Nightwish movie of the same name In the film, Gem is the name of the daughter of the storyteller. GEm. I believe I saw that youve done my no 3 as well, 7 Days to the Wolves, must look that up. Song of Myself was after GLS so number 14. If you think this was exausting wait till you get to Buenos Aires 2018. 2 hours in they do Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean and Slaying the Dreamer, both of which are wild.

During the live performances, fragments of this are projected on the video wall. I find it quite moving. This song is, I think, a key piece to understanding who and what Tuomas is about. Your comment in the text about the change from G to E minor was something i have only heard a couple of trained musical experts notice, and although I am not trained in music theory, i found your explanation the best I have heard. Although I had thought it was from sad to be more hopeful, so thanks for the clarification. I am not sure if the change was also demontrated in the final notes that Floor sang when she went up in tone. I believe this is a personal song and written from the perspective of the song writer/performer that Tuomas is. The up&down changes in mood, Piano black (as in Grand Piano colour) when down, the references to needing a courageous symphony ( to play the music written) and, the feelings of putting on an act for the show.

the change from G to e minor. I had the chance to ask Tuomas and Troy in an interview about it. Here's the clipping: Let's take a step back. At the end of “Song of Myself” there are a series of short stories. The last sentence is “And there forever remains that change from G to E minor” [loosely translated: “And what remains at the end is the eternal change from G major to E minor]. What does this sentence mean to you? Holopainen (both laughing): I can't reveal it. Donockley: But it's a very beautiful thing. Holopainen: When it comes to art, timeless art, you have to remain ambiguous. I don't want to seem pompous, but let's look at the Mona Lisa. If we could travel back in time to ask da Vinci what exactly he wanted to express with her smile - and then he gives us a very simple and obvious answer, then the special, mysterious thing would be over in one fell swoop. Instead, people have been studying this work of art for centuries. That's what's special about art. As an artist you should never explain yourself too much. Donockley: The best way to respond to art is completely personal. Anyone who explains art only makes it smaller. Are any of you interested in what I make of the change from G major to E minor? Donockley: Absolutely. Many Nightwish pieces are about the great value of memories. Anyone experiencing something particularly beautiful would compose that moment in a triumphant key like G major. Over time, such memories often become mixed with melancholy. Although the memory is the same, the notes are the same, the atmosphere changes. As in the parallel key of E minor. Happy is the one who continues to discover the beautiful in the sad. Holpainen: That's very nice. Donockley: That's exactly what we meant before. The Mona Lisa's smile. Holpainen: Thanks for telling us that. Donockley (laughs): Even if that's not what we understand behind the sentence.

As a non musically educated, music lover, I am both impressed with and admire your musical intuition and knowledge! As another has said, the music 'nerdery' is great! Nightwish are awesome and in my top 5 bands of all time, but also high on my list are bands like Dream Theater, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, and Lovebites. Looking forward to you reacting to music from all of these bands whether you already know them or not! I've mentioned Lovebites to you before, but when you do get around to them, I would suggest starting with one of their 'thrashier' metal songs like The Hammer of Wrath, from their Knocking At Heaven's Gate DVD or for a more ballad-gone-prog song try Edge Of The World, Live. Enable the CC with them when you can as even though all their music is sung in English, having the words in view, helps! Have a great week!🤘

Nice reaction again ! As you probably know, the G and the E minor are basically the same tone, the G is more uplifting and the E minor is more melancholic and that is what life brings, when you are young it is all still uplifting and the older you get, it becomes more melancholic.

Hello there. Nice reaction! Regarding the band being tired: I believe this was the song before the finale, which was 'Last Ride of the Day', so I imagine you're right. It speaks to the band's professionalism and stamina that they can be tired and yet pull off this wonderful performance. :)

Yes, song 14 of 15, immediately following Ghost Love Score and preceding Last Ride of the Day. By this point they've been performing for about an hour and a half, and it's after midnight local time.

This song is for You Ann (mother of Nightwish Army) R.I.P 🤘😔🤘 Your flame and passion lives on in Us 🤘🔥🤘. Ann Waychoff was known by many as the Nightwish Mom. She would give comments to people who reacted to Nightwish videos to try and help the reactors understand and she would tirelessly exchange comments with people who wanted to know more. She also communicated privately with a large number of fans and reactors (we know now from the tributes.). kzbin.info?search_query=ann+waychoff will show how many knew her and how many liked her enough to spend hours making videos about her/dedicated to her. Pure fire and great song 🤘🔥🤘, especially the poem that goes with it. NWSU/FloorFan/Epican/Ayreonaut/TWA .

The music box could be right. The song is from the concept album / film music Imaginaerum. “And there forever remains the change from G to E minor” alludes to the music box. The main character had a music box on his piano and he promised his daughter that if she played correctly the music box would start playing. For the daughter, it was long a symbol of her father's lies; no matter how much she practiced, the music box never played. After his death, she tinkles around on the piano and finds the key to the music box in the piano strings and lets it play. When the father suffers from dementia, he begins to write down what he always wanted to say to his daughter but never said. His silence had divided the two of them. It becomes a work of art and he calls it Song of myself. He will never finish it and dies beforehand. Tuomas got the idea from the poem of the same name by the American poet Wittman. The studio version includes quotes from Song of Myself, spoken by the band members and the film's actors.

The G to E minor is from the last part of the poem on the studio version. ""Ever seen the Lord smile? All the care for the world made Beautiful a sad man? Why do we still carry a device of torture around our necks? Oh, how rotten your pre-apocalypse is All you bible-black fools living over nightmare ground I see all those empty cradles and wonder If man will ever change I, too, wish to be a decent man-boy But all I am is smoke and mirrors Still given everything, may I be deserving And there forever remains that change from G to Em""

As Tuomas is the major songwriter of Nightwish, and by virtue of the fact that this song is titled "Song of Myself", perhaps he is intimating in this song... "And there forever remains the change from G to E min"... that he is bi-polar?

Although it would not be a highly rated video, could you at least watch to the BBC video of Ashes are Burning by Renaissance. Renaissance was Nightwish in the 70's. A mix of rock, classic and jazz. Annie Haslam was the Floor of that time. All are excellent musicians and composers. They do not have a drummer they have a percussionist. If you do and are interested their Live at Carnegie Hall with the NY Philharmonic is their peak, but no video of the event.
