Harai goshi by Shintaro Higashi.
Ai yotsu, or RvR and LvL:
Adjust position so that your lapel hand is higher than theirs. When your partner is standing in a neutral position, load the hip and take them straight over. Pull, load them onto the hip, block the shin, and rotate over the hip. In another variation you can skew your hips to the side and rotate your partner over your leg. In either version, it's very important to off balance your partner forward so as not to get countered. Kuzuchi is easiest when you're in a dominant position!
Kenka yotsu, or RvL:
A great way to set up a harai goshi is with a two-step uchi mata. To defend the uchi mata, partner will posture up and move away. Anticipate your partner's defense of the two step uchi mata and stick the leg across and attack the leg for harai. Some people might call this ashi guruma.
The most important thing is dominant position before attacking a big turn throw such as harai

We were just learning these moves in class last week. Any chance you do a video on the diference between harai goshi, o guruma and ashi guruma? They look similar and looks like even you mixed them up too 😂 (although you did recognize ashi guruma). P. S. Thanks for the videos. Been very useful watching them.

for all intents and practical purposes at our (probably) non-professional level, they are basically the same, ashi guruma is your foot at the bottom of ukes leg, near the ankle, harai is just below his knee and o guruma is your sweeping leg at his hip level,
@kenkongermany7860
@kenkongermany7860 4 жыл бұрын
To me the slowmo at the beginning and the throw at the end was Harai Goshi. (No Hane Goshi anywhere...). Most other were short Ashi Guruma Versions. To me the Harai Goshi leg pushes the outer leg a little back, then is a pivioting point for ukes weight resting partly on it. The intial bump to lift uke stems from the mittle of his tigh. Ashi Guruma is a barrage in the air for a te waza (no weight resting on it, altough the pivot is much more obvious). Often comes in play when uke tries to jump around a harai goshi or tai otoshi. Wich you can encourage with one sidestep with him right before the entry.

I don't understand why this is the only online video in the whole Internet were the GOSHI, from 'hara' goshi', is considered as a part of the explanation. I will base my harai goshi in this one. The rest of the videos only consider the sweep, the 'harai'.

Could you demonstrate harai goshi with a cross collar choke entry? We use that attack quite a bit in the aiki jujitsu school I attend. Ie we enter a standing cross collar choke and then Harai goshi. A number of our kata counter that. I would love to see you explain the addition of the choke. Thanks!

Great stuff! love your videos. At the end you said some might call it Hane Goshi and they might but they would be wrong, you would be right. Your leg is still sweeping i.e. Harai Hane requires a more exaggerated bend/spring/lift from the support leg, also in Hane the throwing leg is bent to create a hip to knee platform that bounces Uke up then a strong kake rotation to unload. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, going to try to pass this stuff on to our students. Ji Ta Kyo Ei

You've emphasised obtaining the dominant position for Harai. But probably a newbie question, but what should you do if do if you have the inferior position? Are there throws that are more "preferable' from an inferior position. I know the answer is probably don't let the opponent get the dominant position, but as you know that sometimes isn't possible or you've slipped up and you have to work from there.

If this is harai goshi what is the version (no gi) where you have under and overhook, you finish the same except you don't swing the leg? Like you just put your leg down and trip them over it? I don't know what it's called but i see it in mma all the time. Olympic judoka and soon to be PFL world champion mma lightweight, kayla Harrison uses it.

What’s the difference between this harai and a tai otoshi?
@kenkongermany7860
@kenkongermany7860 4 жыл бұрын
There are a few. In Tai otoshi your lower leg gives his lower leg a little push right above it's foot. It there is leg contact at all. Tai otoshi is a standing barrage on the ground, like ashi guruma is in the air. The tai otoshi position when stretching the leg mainly is a power source for your grip standing sideways to him. On migi t.o. your right elbow could rest in his left armpit like in some tsuri goshi versions - to feel this priniple very clear.
@vladmirlenin9749
@vladmirlenin9749 4 жыл бұрын
technically they're two very different thows, if you want to get all traditional tai otoshi is 'te-waza' which means 'hand techniques' that means the throw is all in your hands, and it is, your (blocking) leg, is only their to *block their leg from stepping over, their is leg/leg contact and a bit of a 'bump' midthrow but the whole throw happens in the hands, whereas in harai goshi is 'koshi-waza' or 'hip techniques' you actually are lifting the guy onto your hip to throw him and the leg sweeps up to block a high step around, but realy, he should be on your hip
