This one video informed me of 10x the amount of information I could not get after 1/ reading the manual supplied by Badlands with the identical winch 2/ from talking with a store manager at Harbor Freight store 3/ from talking on the phone with the managers manager 4/ from calling habor freights toll free number and speaking with the tech on duty. Everything was explained in detail and easy to understand. Thank you so much , you just made my life and wallet happy Rich Caccamo

Ghostses--thanks for the email reply. I don't know @ Google settings to receive your comment, but I do know that I got the winch mounted and operational! WaHoo! Just have to second what others have already said; excellent comprehensive review! Concise & in depth in all the right places. I got the wireless control also. What I have noticed, there is a second or two delay from when you release the button (regardless if you are paying out or taking up slack). Just be careful taking up the slack, the delay can be dangerous.
@ghostses8 жыл бұрын
+tc1uscg I don't think the delay on mine is quite that long, but there certainly is one for sure. You are correct about being careful- especially when winding the last of the cable in. Thanks for the post, G.

Thank you for a VERY educational video on winches in general, the 12000 pound Harbor winch, as well as both use and safety guidelines. P.S. I bought their 12,000 pound winch, and now, I will be a lot more comfortable with setting it up. Many people advocate switching to a synthetic cable, but because of winch heat and other items it sounds as though I should stick with the wire cable.
@ghostses5 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it Gregory! I can't speak for the synthetic, but know more care needs to be used. The wire works well enough for me. Good luck, G.

bought this winch....piece of typical Harbor Freight junk. We had a small tree fall across the road, blocking us from getting out.....oh boy.....we get to use the new winch! We cut the tree in half..hooked up the winch....put a strain on it....pulled for 8 seconds and it overheated and turned off...so we let it cool...used it again for 8 seconds before it quit again....long story short ..took an hour to move the tree. We replaced that Harbor Freight scrap metal with a 15000# Warn real Winch. The Harbor Freight winch makes your rig look like it has a winch and that is all. Video says 5% duty cycle....reality is 1% duty cycle....PURE JUNK....
@ghostses8 жыл бұрын
+Bill Waldron That's unfortunate. My experience with it has been great. Glad you found a better solution for yourself. Take care, G.
@19882fast4u7 жыл бұрын
Bill Waldron , im guessing you had several problems, not do to the winch. Probably not the right set up, like the proper battery size, rating, and Ah's. im guessing you ran stock power and ground cables that came with the truck, instead of upgrading the - and + wires, the alternator and starter wire as well. And I'm going to guess you didn't upgrade your alternator to a larger Amp unit, and when pulling with the winch, you just kept the idle at stock of around 750 rpms. Then you probably used the safety relays that come with the winch, without proper connections to it, leaving it to get hot in a few seconds. Its clear you don't have knowledge in this field. I've own this and many other winches, and there is absolutely no problems with this unit, if done right and set up properly. People like you shouldn't run a winch, unless you are willing to do things right.
@bill49677 жыл бұрын
DON'T EVEN GO THERE WITH YOUR INSULT! 19882fast4u" about the Harbor Freight junk winch not being the problem, but that is was installed incorrectly. You picked the wrong person to try to display your electrical knowledge with. The Harbor Freight winch is priced very cheap for a reason. It makes a nice front bumper decoration for wannabees. I am the owner of an industrial construction company and an electrician for forty years. Like many other Harbor Freight items, it is a piece of Chinese junk. The truck we tried it on was a heavy duty Dodge Ram Cummins with the heavy duty alternator and two batteries. We threw away the Harbor Freight junk winch and installed a Warn 15,000 pound commercial duty winch. It pulls all day. We do not have to leave the engine running or speed up the idle. You get what you pay for. I have put WARN winches on many of our service trucks over the 40 years in business for all day long hoisting, pulling, lifting, etc. with never a failure...never ever. .....years back...when in a jam, one of my construction foreman purchased a 24" Harbor Freight pipe wrench...The handle broke in two and nearly sent him off the building while working up high on the steel. The consumer just has to be careful what you buy from Harbor Freight........better to buy quality made in the USA and employ American workers.
@19882fast4u7 жыл бұрын
Bill Waldron , yeah I can tell you are not a owner. But guess what I am, look it up, owner of the Car Whispers Mobile Mechanic Service, LLC. Makes me laugh, you claim your some owner and you have all this electrician mechanical background, but your in a Harbor Freight store buying a winch......sure you are! lol. Also you act just cause your in a big old dodge diesel, that makes a difference, lol. Shit is still stock on that rig, just like the rest omg. I know its a diesel, lmao I guess it should just pull better right???....get the fuck out. Its totally clear you dont know shit about a god damn winch. I tell you what, ill pay for your ticket here and back, show up at my business, will go down together and buy that harbor freight 12k winch. Will pull it out of the box together, and ill install it on any rig you chose in my parking lot, even my employees geo swift turd that he drives everyday, and ill pay to do it correctly.......Then will hook it up to any tree you like, and pull the thing out of the ground. And it wont take but a few minutes. Now the trade is, if you win, and it doesn't work, then ill give you 1k cash for the trouble, and a trip paid back home. But if it does work, you get to pay your own way home, and I get to kick you in the balls, and punch you in the face. Bet you wont take my offer will ya???? Go to my face book page, look up my business, and send me your info so I can send you a ticket. learn how to install a winch and operate it before ever touching one again. Now get the fuck out with your fake ass knowledge that you don't really have. Troll
@19882fast4u7 жыл бұрын
Bill Waldron And just for the record, a "winch" in not for lifting you dumb shit, pulling only lol. ANOTHER example of you not knowing how to operate one. Probably work for McDonald's lol

Thank you sir ! You've helped me greatly ! I just bought a winch same thing but must be slightly different as it's not got the automatic tensioner stuff. My friend bought it thinking his old one was bad turned out the battery was his problem. Point being he's lost the owner manual and that red strap for the hook ! Guess I'll figure out something ! Anyway that entire video you've shown me helped with the gearbox question I had do I trust they've done the BEST job or do I do as you did , so we'll see on that. Thank you again for your help and good luck to you !!!!

Good deal Kurt! If it's a HF winch, I believe they had to models of the 12k, one with the tensioner and one without. In most cases, you can download the correct manual by the model number on their website (assuming it's a HF winch). You can make a strap pretty much out of anything, or purchase one. Good luck to you as well, G.

Excellent presentation, Ghostsess! I just purchased a similar winch and intend to mount it on my car hauler trailer. However, I also may be adapting it for property clearing, etc., just as you have. You've given me some excellent ideas, which I plan to put into good use! Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge.

Thanks! I'm glad you got some ideas. I've seen some folks using a cradle and a receiver mounted to their trailers so they can remove it. It would be great to move it from place to place for different uses. Good luck with your project! G.

Thanks again G, yet another great review. I've never used a winch but now have a much greater respect for them. I've done a fair amount of rigging and your safety tips have shown me some better ways to secure my loads now. Never thought about hook up versus down but it makes a lot of sense. Well done sir...

Thank you for the video was very informative and awesome. I'm going to subscribe to your station so I can stay tuned for more stuff. Cuz like you I like to tinker and build and fix on things and it's great to have the University of KZbin where people can come and show how to possibly work on things that I haven't taken apart yet or I'm thinking about buying.

Glad you liked it and found it informative. Feel free to dig around my channel for anything that might be of interest. I think there's around 300 videos of various subjects. Darn great video ! I fabbed up a mounting plate to go where my spare used to ride and put my roller fair line where my license plate was. A rear mount just made more sense for my needs. I wish I had known about the receiver hitch mount from Northern would have been way faster, although not quite as strong. I've got a 1/2 plate 10 inch wide from frame rail to frame rail. Plus. it's be nice being to winch with a trailer hooked up to the hitch. One thing about grubbing the trees and shrubs... I hope you were sure of where all your plumbing was. Thank you very much for the effort you put into this video.
