The intended purpose of this video was just to quickly show sharpening that could be achieved. It was also recorded 3yrs ago and methods have greatly surpassed this by now. For the gentleman who so politely asked, "WHAT F****** ANGLE DO YOU HAVE IT SET TO? SEEMS IMPORTANT!!! Ive provided you the spoon fed information in the description above. Regardless, the angle itself doesnt matter its the progression, grit level, scratch pattern at the apex, and ultimately the honing step that is most critical.

I've been collecting knives for only 3 or 4 years actively and naturally I want to be able to sharpen them. I've purchased 2 lanskys and a work sharp with the blade grinder attachment and of all 3 I've had more success with the cheap lansky with the 2 rods. I'm wonder what is the most important thing to do on a belt sharpener like the work sharp. After watching this video I want to run down to harbor freight and get the 1×30 but the principle of the work sharp is the same but whats keeping me from getting those razor sharp edges

I'm really impressed. Especially considering that is a peice of shit knife. I taught knife skills at a culinary Institute. That knife I wouldn't use to spread butter is so shit. With that being said, you sir, have made it useful enough to slice meat. Good job.

Before buying this sander I would use a rotary sander kzbin.infoUgkx3Pc2vLXfcgM5oIpF1iYcIWyFhHUC-G6v and didn't see the need for a belt sander. Boy was I wrong. this belt sander does the job quickly and gives a professional finish to the wood work.

I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm kzbin.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

@gregmccormack5709
@gregmccormack5709 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Pete, the angle guide just slips onto the 1 x 30's platen and is held in place with a tensioned clip. It's easy to pop on and off if needed. That's why Cliff was easily able to remove it for the final stropping step in the Vid.

Thats the basic idea. Edge leading for sharpening to minimize the burr. Edge trailing with the leather so it dont damage the belt and hurt the operator. The ONLY way to safely sharpen edge leading into a belt is with an angle guide and even then do so at your own risk ofcourse. Aloha

I did this last week for the first time and it went so so. I don’t think I’ve done a sharp enough angle even though I thought I’d put it at 17 degrees. Maybe I’m getting the line up mark wrong. It’s not very clear where you line up the 17 with. I’m going to repeat today at a lower angle I had a disaster with the leather strop too. I think I’ve not got the compound on finely enough. Bits of it were bumping the knife and leaving black gunge on blade. It also made the blade worse than before. It’s all about learning as you go along. Looking forward to having another crack at it today 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Leather belt is another "surgi-sharp" item available on Amazon. Because its a natural product it may be wonky tho. My first belt seasoned up nicely, 2nd belt was loose, 3rd belt was wobbly etc. YMMV Another option is synthetic felt belts, they run smooth but you may miss out on the burnishing effects leather offers.

There are indeed many ways to get many different types of edges. Slicing phone book paper is one test but free standing is another, splitting hair is another test and so on.

I dont use a stop I like the belt to flex so that it produces a convex edge.

It's nice to have options. If you're using the belt without a platten I highly recommend you go edge trailing for safety. Unfortunately that method leaves a huge feather Burr. It can of course be removed but I have suspicions that it weakens the edge perhaps a little bit

@@CurryCustomCutlery That's how J. Neilson sharpens his knives. ;-) Yes the edge is always pointed down on the belt. I follow up with a leather strop 1 x 30 belt.

(2) Each of: 120 Grit Firestorm Ceramic Polyester Belt, 220 Grit Ceramic Alumina Closed Coat Belt, 400 Grit Aluminum Oxide Soft Closed Coat Belt, 600 Grit Aluminum Oxide Soft Closed Coat Belt, 800 Grit Aluminum Oxide Soft Closed Coat Belt & 1200 Grit Aluminum Oxide Blue Film Belt.

The edge trailing angle guides dont work well for precise sharpening because the belt will ALWAYS try to pull the knife off the guide as it spins. People want edge trailing becuase it safer but it leaves a large feather burr that over all is weaker at the apex.

I'm guessing you're talking about Edge trailing on the slack belt while in the horizontal position? Yeah I showed up and several of my following videos after this.

Curry Custom Cutlery Thanks. They were out of stock on Amazon but I found one on eBay for the same price with free shipping for anyone else that might be interested. I watched your video as well. Gonna definitely break out the Dremel and cut the groove to compensate for thumb stud folders. Have you ever had a problem with picking up a chattering sound from the platen while sharpening? It got so bad I was just sharpening on the slack but results were less than stellar. I picked up the silica carbide belts and I like you find that they just wear out really fast. I might have to track down some of the Trivex belts in the 200-1000 grit range. Thanks for the great videos for us small grinder guys.
