@InimicalWit3 жыл бұрын
Defo. Like HW says, there’s hardly enough weight to his absence. The plot itself is fine; but yes, we needed more of Jack absent, showing the other characters succeeding (at least a little bit) without him there. For people who might actually stop watching the show if he’s not in it (people, say, who don’t watch DW and wouldn’t know that Jack was certain to return), then have him return in the final minutes of the first episode, as part of a denouement that lets the other characters express token dissatisfaction with him; and then start the second episode by dealing with that and actually having that conversation as he tries to resume his leadership as the next threat presents itself to them.

I think for once you gave Chibnall more credit than I did. I kinda wrote John off as just Sci-fi Spike. Old friends turned enemies was the dynamic Spike had with Angel (who reminded me of both the 9th Dr and Jack) though it's also obviously Master and the Doctor- "we'd be emperors" even sounds like a Master line. It makes sense that Jack has a Master of his own after coming from meeting the Dr's dark reflection. It's interesting that when Chibnall actually writes the Master he essentially goes for the Deadly Assassin model as opposed to the kind of characters Simm and Masters played.

Kind of funny how Torchwood series 2 basically has a very similar plot to Doctor Who series 12. A fun fast paced opener that sees the hero's world get shaken by the unexpected return of their nemesis, who in their final scene teases a big revelation about the hero's past. A lot of focus is placed on the secretive nature of the main character and their refusal to let their friends in on any of their secrets, which establishes some friction amongst the group. Episode 5 acts as a bit of mid-series baiting for the finale, in which the main action of the story provides further information that builds towards the big reveal. All of this leads to a finale in which the aforementioned nemesis makes their big return and the hero has to use their extended lifespan to survive their traps and stop them, all while their companions are fighting for their lives and the entire world is crumbling around them

The Time Agency is actually a reference to classic Who, where they are mentioned in 4th Doctor Story, the Talons of Weng-Chiang, as a force hunting the villain of that episode, initially suspecting the Doctor of being one. A more Modern Audio Story, written some decades later in 2012, featuring the fifth Doctor, features the Fifth Doctor meeting that same villain, prior to their meeting; to preserve the timeline, the Doctor claims to be a Time Agent - which is where that villain first hears the term.

The comment about not properly setting stuff up was also a Moffat issue too. So many characters and ideas just dropped out of nowhere and ultimately disappeared unresolved. Neither chibnal nor moffat seem to understand that for something to be a mystery you need to care enough to ask questions. Just not telling us what’s going on doesn’t make something a mystery and making use of a plot device you haven’t set up just feels so deus ex machina.
@alexandertaylor73163 жыл бұрын
I legit feel that RTD was the biggest deus ex machina offender of them all; he'd set up such grandiose odds against the Doctor that there was no way of reasonably getting out of it, and that led to more and more egregious levels of deus ex machina. The end of time's solution was literally him shooting some machine, Journey's end saw an entire dalek empire rendered silly with a few levers on a single console, and the season 3 ending was literally prayer saying the day.
@BambiTrout3 жыл бұрын
@@alexandertaylor7316 RTD did at least usually set up his deus ex machinae. The time vortex in the S1 finale was set up in Boom Town. The machine in The End of Time was well established as the only secure link between Earth and Gallifrey, so shooting it breaks the link. The thing that burnt the air in The Poison Sky was established as a way to convert an atmosphere to one like Earth's. Even the whole prayer thing in S3 was set up, even if the whole space Jesus moment was fucking ridiculous. He always made use of Chekhov's gun, meaning that even if sometimes it wasn't that satisfying, you at least felt like it made sense, and like that was how it was always supposed to happen. Moffat's problem seemed to be more overambition. He'd set everything and the kitchen sink up, but would only actually resolve half of the threads. His plots usually made sense and the setups WERE there, but there was often too much bloat and red herrings, and often the setup could get lost in the mix. Moffat often got a bit too intricate and clever for his own good, and as a result his stories could get confusing. Also, Series 6 is always in the wrong order because every character is following a different timeline, and half of the episodes have flashbacks to the same events but from different perspectives. Chibnall does the worst of both worlds, particularly in Doctor Who. He doesn't set things up, and he drops plot lines like hot cakes. Like how The Doctor transferred the DNA bombs to Tim Shaw offscreen with no mention. Or how she pulled an EMP out of nowhere in The Ghost Monument. Or how Ryan is apparently a KZbinr in TWWFTE, and it never gets mentioned again, and more.
@alexandertaylor73163 жыл бұрын
@@BambiTrout I disagree completely about RTD; the fact that he set them up in some way didn't make it actually make sense. Most of the time it felt to me like "Oh, this thing also does that? That's a massive oversight by the enemies...", in a way that cheapens the experience significantly. The season 1 ending did this fairly convincingly, but it went downhill from there. I do generally agree about Moffat though. Sometimes the results were excellent but a lot of the time the results were "huuh?". And let's not even mention Chibnall... My only issue is that people tend to overlook some pretty major issues with RTD's writing while hyperfocusing on those of Moffat's. Nostalgia goggles maybe? Don't get me wrong, I love RTD's writing overall, I also love Moffat's, but both have some very major flaws.
@BambiTrout3 жыл бұрын
@@alexandertaylor7316 That's fair enough if you feel that way. I personally don't feel it cheapens the experience usually. I for the most part think it makes the episodes more rewatchable, because you can go back and pick up on all the hints you missed. I find RTD episodes just that much more interesting to replay, partly because nostalgia tbf, but also because there's a lot of subtext and commentary I missed as a child, and I enjoy that feeling I get from going back and picking up on those clues and hints. I do get what you're saying about "oh that was a massive oversight", but for me personally I don't mind if the enemy is a bit stupid or missed something obvious, because a) often it makes sense for a villain to be a bit careless, because it shows their arrogance - James Bond movies do it all the time, and b) I would rather have an unsatisfying conclusion that can be traced back, than a more dramatic one that comes completely out of left field. Particularly given the 45 minute runtime of most NuWho adventures, there's not often time to wrap everything up individually - something Moffat always struggled with - and so often the best way to maximise the use of that time is to drop hints along the way, make the enemy a bit less observant and have everything fall into place at the end. That being said, I think the issue with a lot of the more egregious RTD finale's you cited is that in reality they could have done with more time to flesh things out in order to avoid having to rely on enemy stupidity and simpler solutions to have a proper conclusion. In reality, my ideal DW showrunner would be a love child of RTD and Moffat. Moffat's best work was under Davies, and Moffat's episodes were the highlights of Davies' run. I love the intricacies of Moffat's plotting and his combination of hard sci-fi concepts with childhood fears, but he does sometimes OVERplot and gets so wrapped up in the mystery or the concept that he forgets about the characters or the answer. Meanwhile RTD's character work and world building is the best, and his scripts are extremely efficient, but he sometimes oversimplifies things and falls into melodrama, leaving the sci-fi elements a bit underdeveloped or cartoony. You can see from the success of Blink, Silence in the Library, The Empty Child, and Girl in the Fireplace that Moffat's intricacies and high-concepts, tempered by Davies' focus on real characters and removing story bloat can lead to some amazing TV. Their flaws balanced each other out. The one thing with both writers is that their scripts, even if not always perfect, did always feel finished, while most of Chibnall's writing feels like a first draft. Not so much on Torchwood, but ESPECIALLY in Series 11, and Series 12 to a marginally lesser extent. Like it doesn't seem like anyone went back and double checked they made sense before shooting them - a feeling I never got with Moffat or RTD.

I am a big fan of both your series and torchwood as a whole. However, I have noticed that you often don't have many trigger warnings or warnings about disturbing content. Going into this video series I had not watched torchwood and when I got to your episode about countrycide i nearly had a panic attack as I was very much underprepared for what I was getting into. I have now seen all of torchwood and while I would agree that season two is much lighter in tone as a whole there are still some very dark moments. Specifically, the episode "Adam" put me in genuine emotional distress when I first watched it and it took me five watch throughs and hours of emotional preparation before I was able to fully watch the episode (specifically the parts with Ianto after he nearly discovers Adam's secret). I'm not saying this to accuse you of anything, but I do think a lot of people underestimate how distressing some images and concepts can be for some people and I think it's important to warn people of these things so they can decided whether or not they are prepared to watch them. And even if you aren't intending to cover that specific plotline very much I still believe it's important to warn people as the mere existence of these videos are encouraging people to watch the show. To close this out though, I love the series, and I'm so happy you're covering series two.

Raid sucks but they pay a fortune. I only know they're shit commercials and the fact that creators keep mentioning the insane amounts they were offered to shill for them. What makes them worse than other boring games?

I think it’s really silly to have toned down the adult nature of the show; seeing as our lead is a pansexual being whose typical exploits exist at the disapproval of the family friendly Doctor. It can be the self aware it tries to be; but the adult themes of the show deserved not to be hindered by an effort to make the show accesible to a younger audience. I mean, if you want a spin-off show that’s accesible to a younger audience, then make one for that. (R.I.P. “Class”). This show could have been a rival to “Being Human” (2008-2013) if it had allowed itself to be. Instead, Being Human is what Torchwood suggested it would be.

Considering how edgy and try hard series 1 was, I don’t think the writing team were ready to properly handle such extremely mature themes yet. At least Children of Earth and the Big Finish audios handled adult concepts more smartly and maturely.

@@EditedAF987 I’ve listened to a lot of Big Finish for Doctor Who and been very pleased with how they handle the tone for the different areas whose “holes” they fill. There’s just so much of it, tho; I stopped listening a while ago as my passion shifted slightly. It’s nice to hear that a fan of Torchwood is similarly pleased with how Big Finish have handled them; it gives me some reassurance, should I get back into it.

@@EditedAF987 series one was extremely about sex. Series 2 has more story. They're still omnisexual (I think pan is the 21st century version that limits itself to humans because they haven't met sexy aliens like the doctor yet 😇)
@DontSigh3 жыл бұрын
A character can be pansexual but also family friendly. Those things have nothing to do with each other. Regardless, even though the tone shifted slightly, it was not a drastic shift at all. It's not like season 1 was ever like Being Human, it executed the "adult" themes way too badly for that (see Day One), and it was always too camp for that kind of comparison. Season 2 just made a choice of direction and made things more consistent.
@stephjovi3 жыл бұрын
@@DontSigh of course a pansexual or omnisexual character can be family friendly. But an alien sex gas seems less family friendly

Ah yes Chris Chibnall ripping off the S2 version of Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer so much so that James Marsters even played him. The embarrassing thing is how John is so unoriginal yet one of the best and most memorable Torchwood villains for James Marsters alone.

@larannaslore1163 жыл бұрын
@@HarboWholmes you mention comparisons but with a title like that I expected it to all be about the Master not an episode review with occasional pointing out of how jack & John mimic the doctor & the master. A title like ‘Torchwood S2E1 review with a new spin on the Master’ would have been more honest. Like I said I like your stuff just felt deflated as the episode went on as I love the Master & click anything he’s mentioned in.
