This video is very informative! I just think there is a mistake in your explanation, because clusters are not the smallest possible data on your hdd. Since clusters consist of different sectors, a sector is therefore the smallest possible data block on your hdd. Please correct me if I am wrong. I really loved this video! Thanks!
@anxiousearth6803 жыл бұрын
I noticed that as well. Though I don't know much about HDDs, the video itself mentions sectors as a basic unit of storage. But it then goes to call sectors, what it defines as a group of sectors, as the smallest possible unit of storage. That sounds contradictory.
@nubit54973 жыл бұрын
I'm confused as well but here is what I understood. Sector is the smallest unite that can bee accessed. Cluster is a group of sector allocated but is the smallest space allocation for a file in the file system.
@alinekoh2 Жыл бұрын
@@anxiousearth680 There is no mistakes, in other word the cluster is like a block, which is some collections of sectores. I assume cluster is anunymus to Block of records in DBMS.

The disk drive does not implement clusters; it is a concept implemented in the file system. As I recall, I've been retired from writing firmware for SCSI/SAS disk drives for a decade, we used the terms physical block address (PBA) and logical block address (LBA). The PBA is the location of the data on the disk, LBA is what the system specifies. The drive convert LBA to PBA by taking into account such as reallocated blocks.

Very detailed explanation. But one question, 7:30 On the Platter Structure part, you mention that a sector is a basic unit of storage. 8:15 But then the video calls clusters, which are groups of sectors, the smallest unit of storage possible. How can that be if clusters are made of sectors, which are smaller units of storage?
@IMNODOCTOR Жыл бұрын
A cluster is logically defined (meaning, it is software-based). It is the software (aka file system driver) which determines the ideal size of a logical sector (number of physical sectors per cluster size or simply cluster). Different file systems (FS) define their own set of supported sizes (another word for cluster is Allocation Unit, the default in Windows systems is 512 bytes on NTFS). The FS driver doesn't care about the contents of the file (that's the job of the business applications like Word to interpret), they only care about the size of the file and how much cluster is needed to store it. Each cluster can store just one type of file, so a file is the only data type or unit in a specific file system. Now the size of files varies (you have big files like videos and small files like text files) so there will be trade offs. A big cluster means you have less chunks to read per unit of storage (if file is big) but will waste space (aka slack space) a lot if used for small files. Also when a physical sector becomes bad, the entire cluster where it's in is declared bad (remember 1 cluster = N number of physical sectors). Small cluster on the other hand will require more chunks to read/write to so it takes awhile to load a file when reading and/or writing from the storage device when the user is using a large file but for small files, it is efficient and fast. Also when there's a bad sector, a small cluster means a few physical sectors are flagged unusable. So large cluster size equals less files for a given storage device capacity. Large cluster sizes are ideal for large files like videos, pictures, and music files. Small cluster size means more files for a given storage device capacity. Small cluster size are ideal for small files like text files. I explained stuff more than what's necessary but I hope you get the idea. 😁😁😁

That is one wonderful question. Since scratch on platter means physical damage on it, the read/write head will face struggle to read/write the data on/from it. The hard disk will be ON, other parts will work but no data can be read / write on/from that part.

Hit read aloud and choose from a wide variety of natural sounding voices in different accents.
