Can you write the ratio of straw, sand, clay and what else is needed to put. Thanks.
@HardcoreSustainable
@HardcoreSustainable 3 ай бұрын
The ratio of clay to sand really depends on the clay you are using. You should do some test batches with different ratios, but about 2-3 sand to 1 clay is normal. The straw can be heavy or minimal depending on what you are going for. Putting a lot in won't hurt and will add more structure. Think of straw as rebar, sand as gravel, and clay as cement---to compare it to what's in concrete. For the inner dome of this oven, we didn't use any straw because it would just burn up from the heat. I'd recommend watching my longer video about this on my channel. kzbin.info/www/bejne/an7PpWyjit9gnZIsi=fw4DYwxCwb2GtJFR

Thank you so much for sharing this amazing video....well done! This is a bucket list project for me...one day! I do have 2 questions...At the 7 month mark there are some cracks, would those need to be "patched"? Would this oven be ok without a roof over head? Thanks again, I really enjoyed watching the process.
@HardcoreSustainable

ARe there cracks inside or outside? I would not build this without some protection from the weather over it. The earthen plaster will just wash away otherwise.
@brianleary137
@brianleary137 3 ай бұрын
A couple of questions 1. Do need to have the cobb oven under cover or will it stand up to the elements by itself? 2. Do have to add cement to the final coat to ensure better weather resistance?
@HardcoreSustainable
@HardcoreSustainable 3 ай бұрын
it's a good idea to have the oven under a roof to protect from the rain. You can protect the earthen plaster that covers the exterior of the oven with linseed oil. It will harden and repel water. You would do multiple coats of linseed oil mixed with a citrus solvent or turpentine. But i'd still have a cover over it to block most of the direct weather on the oven. On this oven, I just renewed the surface on the outside with a mixture of clay and lime. That will hopefully keep down the mildew, which can grow on the surface in humid climates. I wouldn't add cement to the plaster. That will not do anything and will if anything prevent the oven breathing, so will prevent the passage of moisture out of the oven.

Id love to make this but dont have fire brick where i live. What else can i use?
@HardcoreSustainable
@HardcoreSustainable 5 ай бұрын
YOu don't have to use fire brick. People just make these with cob floors as well. The reason people use fire brick is because it will hold up to the extreme temperatures of the fires. Other bricks or rocks have the potential to break and crack under extreme temperatures, as does cob. Cob will wear a lot faster than bricks or rocks. It's more likely they'll break if they have moisture in them, as well. You could try cob or flat rocks or regular bricks. Just dry the oven out a lot before lighting a fire.

@HardcoreSustainable

The tesla of ovens? So it catches on fire and then crashes into a pedestrian?
@HardcoreSustainable
@HardcoreSustainable Жыл бұрын
hahaha, I was worried that people might think that. I would have said Cadillac (this is how Mark the builder of the oven described it), but those are horrible huge gas guzzlers and I don't think they're the standard for a good car anymore. Tesla's are kind of the cutting edge of car tech and get much better mileage, even if the self-driving tech has a ways to go and really is unnecessary. The oven does catch fire though, or at least holds fire. Got a better non-car metaphor?

@HardcoreSustainable
@HardcoreSustainable Жыл бұрын
Well, tbh this one has had some issues with the dome. It's not normal, but there was some spalling on the dome since it was built. I think it was from the way the dome layer was being manipulated after being put on. I think it was being pushed around too much and was cracking through while still wet. That led to it drying with cracks. Since that layer didn't have straw, it didn't have anything to tie it together. I wonder if it would be possible to put something like metal wire in the mixture to serve the role of straw. The metal wouldn't burn up though. Other than that I think this kind of oven could last a long time. People have been making these kind of cob ovens forever. And a simpler design would be easier to rebuild if needed after years of use. Natural materials can easily be reused.

Works great with bread as well as pizza. The pizza and flatbreads would be baked first at higher temperatures and as the over cools you can bake other foods like loaves of bread, casseroles, or literally anything else you'd bake in an oven.

I am working in a double chamber oven and one of my goals this time is to avoid this smoke out of the door.
@HardcoreSustainable
@HardcoreSustainable 7 ай бұрын
@@mmoellerdeoliveira Well, when you are heating the oven with the initial fire you would close the door and all the smoke would go up the chimney, but the pizza baker keeps the door open and a couple logs burning throughout the time he's baking pies. The fire in there while baking gives the pizza a crispy slightly burnt crust, which adds flavor and is traditional for a pizza oven. But it also means some smoke is escaping throughout the time he's making pizzas. As long as the door is open, you are going to be having some smoke coming out.

The irony: editor focused on crack avoidance/repair but 7 months later it cracked anyways. lol One of the causes was that the insulation cushions, which allowed for significant structural movement, were a part of the "structural support". Layers of different composition would already expand at different rate under normal environment let alone when high heat was introduced. I think an interior brick layer or a layer before plaster would have prevented the exterior from cracking. Albeit, nice big fired oven~
@HardcoreSustainable
@HardcoreSustainable 3 ай бұрын
Who is this editor? What are you talking about and how do you profess to know anything about this oven? And what's ironic about it? The person that built this oven has built many other similar ovens. There has been some cracking on the interior of the dome, but that's likely because of the clay. All clays behave differently. Some can withstand high heat, some can't. We used local clay, which is different from the clay we use in Missouri.

Am I the only one that does not understand why an earthen oven ( back yard use) has to retain heat for days after useing it? I understand commercially yes, but back yard only need to heat up to cook for the day, so what's the point other than over building just to do it?
@HardcoreSustainable
@HardcoreSustainable 13 күн бұрын
The better insulated it is, the faster it will heat up, for one. Better insulation always translates into less fuel consumption. Also, this is actually a community oven. It is used to bake pizzas for a farmer's market. We also plan to have community baking days where people can come by and bake stuff in the oven as it cools, so not just pizza but breads and other baked or dehydrated things. But the advantage of it retaining heat for a long time after is that you can use it to bake other things as it cools, and the more you open it and the more you bake things in it, the faster it cools. If it has less insulation, you'll lose that heat faster. But it's true that if you just want the oven for a brief time to bake some pizzas in your backyard, you don't have to build this elaborate design. You could build a cob oven in half a day and it will serve for brief bakes. You don't need this much insulation. But for that matter, why not just use a regular oven then? Why spend hours firing an oven just to use it for an hour and then let it cool down?

@HardcoreSustainable
@HardcoreSustainable 11 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure that what we purchased from a local landscaping company is local. It's the same pink color as all the sand in the ground around. The difference is that it's likely from deeper underground. We needed sharp sand, which is square shaped, while closer to the surface the sand is rounded from being weathered by water and not being under pressure. It's also just not very cost efficient if there is lots of sand around to ship it from across the country.

I don't think the regular Tesla models are shite cars. The cybertruck is a shite car. The regular Teslas are pretty state of the art and superior in many ways to internal combustion cars. And being that this is a channel about sustainable living, I'd rather advocate for electric cars, which get a lot better fuel efficiency than ICE cars. ICE cars are also old, old tech and way outdated for current times.
