The problem is probably that Erin's providing facts, not bribed anecdotes and buzzwords. People don't always like facts, especially not audiophiles. Ironically, they don't always like performance either 😂 No, Erin's a real gem, with a bright mind and a pleasant personality. He'll get his well deserved fame eventually. Let's just hope he doesn't get worn out on his way to the top (or the Russians get to him after his past US/NASA government disclosure) 😅

This channel is really GOLD! Thanks man. I bought a kali ws-6.2 nearly on this video alone for music & home cinema use in a small highly damped room of 5x5 m. Works really well for me, Still doing the subwoofer crawl, and have a second sub to use with the kali and my 2 Yamaha towers in my 5.2.6 setup, but everything looks good so far. I had a KC62 a few month ago, and this kali is not too far away from it imho. A SVS SB-1000 I also tested but this worked not so well with music, so the KC62 was it, but way too expensive so I gave it back and go now with the KALI.

It gets OLD moving around large subs if you move often and the room placement game... hoping to put the Kali in a space on top of my solid oak computer desk that weighs a TON... Thank you for this nice review. I would like to suggest reviewing the Yamaha NS-SW300 which can be found cheaper and certainly, it has superior performance because it has 250 W output power and it can go down to 20Hz and this 10-inch home subwoofer has the lowest low-frequency rating in a test group, which helps it compete with larger, more powerful 12-inch woofers.

I think something that was left out which is extremely important is the actual crossover. Most people using these subs (for studio monitoring) are going to follow the instructions and plug into the sub and then run out to the speakers from there. The crossover itself can introduce all sorts of problems if it isn't done right. It can add noise, it can create dips or peaks... And adding another mastering-quality crossover to the mix can be easily another hundred bucks. And of course it requires more cables and more fiddling.
@chinmeysway
@chinmeysway 3 ай бұрын
seems like running say kali monitors out of a kali sub is the forethought on this here sub, so the given 80hz crossover selection is sufficient.
@JC-fj7oo
@JC-fj7oo 3 ай бұрын
@@chinmeysway there's more than one Kali monitor... There's also a different size and shaped rooms. In fact I have the Kali and I'm actually dealing with a null around 100hz that would probably be fixed by changing the crossover. An option that's only available with the Yamaha. But that also doesn't say anything about the quality of the crossover itself.

Man Erin you are so good at these reviews but they leave me wanting more information that is important to help understand if they will work in a given system. Are they good for floorstanding speakers down to 40Hz? Are they good for larger monitors that go as low as 50Hz or for smaller monitors that need to be crossed over at 80 Hz? There are no measurements of how well the crossovers work at various settings including the lowest frequency. We also have no idea about enclosure resonance, does the speaker buzz at higher frequencies even if we set a low crossover? What about in-room response and best positioning? Output, group delay and distortion are very important but so much important data is still missing. There is no way I can conclude if these subwoofers would be a good fit for me.
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 9 ай бұрын
Because those factors are invariably tied to your mains and your room. There’s no way for me to know and cover everyone’s setup. I’d need to know the rolloff of the mains. I would need to know the position of the speakers in the room. See measurements of the response in the room to know if crossing over at one point makes more than another. Just way too many variables to be generic about it, unfortunately.

Would it be possible to use the Kali in a hifi setup?

Yes. The kali Sub is a studio subwoofer so it would give you cleaner and tighter bass than a regular hifi sub

Wow, I wonder how the Kali manages to output so much volume at those low frequencies with such small drivers.

Two 6.5" woofers equal about one 9" woofer. Ported 10" subs with comparibly powerful amps have a fair bit more SPL capability (and extension, this rolls of steeply from 32Hz), so this checks out. The Yamaha is just terrible.

If only they would have given the Kali more extension at lower volumes and just limit it at higher volumes, no need to have -6dB at 30Hz at lower volume. EDIT: Well, maybe it's better to just have it be consistent since for its intended purpose it's going to be EQ'd anyway. But among studio subs it's certainly a good choice, I'd love to see them come out with a 10 or 12" model. The Yamaha is just bad for the money. Rating that thing at 22Hz is just wrong.

@@ErinsAudioCorner The WS-12 seems to be more of a PA sub, I was hoping for something more modern and studio or even home theater focused. They certainly have the ability to pull that off. Love your work by the way, really points out the good as well as the bad and sometimes ugly.

@@BL-yj2wp KALI might do that in the future. Keep your eye on their "Mammoth" series. They made a Home Version of the Kali LP-6 v2 Studio Monitors....it's the MM-6. They added Digital Toslink & Digiital Coaxial inputs for versatility....i.e. for your Home Theater HDTV's Toslink output, gaming consoles, A/V receivers, etc. So it has Balanced XLR, single-ended RCA, and the two Digital Inputs. It has been very popular.

Yamaha's subs are just always not that impressive. They all give that cheapo consumer feel even though they're not cheap. 150 watts already tells you what you need to know, it's going to make bass but it won't be anything special. Kali is doing a lot of good stuff these days, they also have some really nice powered speakers.

Hmmm, Polk PSW10 $150 - buy Duals (or better still three) for Room dialed-in bass (granted NOT down to 20hz) -OR- spend $100 more and blow the snot out of both of these subs with the Monoprice Monolith THX 10". Well, just one man's opinion anyhow...

While its certainly a nice sub, I dont get why you shouldnt just buy a Polk HTS10 for 50% cheaper with more output? Am i missing something?
@pkd.81
@pkd.81 6 ай бұрын
You are missing the obvious fact that the Polk HTS10 is a big box consumer-grade home theatre sub and the two subwoofers reviewed here are professional studio monitor subwoofers.

I know this is old, I only just found this shootout, Kali and yamaha aren't aimed at AV they're production subs is why they don't go low I'm no doubt presuming you'd know anyway, we can't hear the notes down there and it's too muddy and boomy for music anyway, which is why we tend to roll off under 30 or so or atleast lower shelf. In terms of the shootout it's simply old tech vs new. Yamaha have sat back for years on their lazy asses as the HS line have overatedly sold forever ha and they as most big business does just lets the money keep rolling until they make new shit :D

that Kali is really really good for a small room. the yamaha is also quite good, just not as low going. you dont percieve THD at very low frequencies, you just feel queasy :)

The generally accepted distortion threshold for our hearing in the subwoofer frequency range is ~10%, so the KALI is right there, while the Yamaha is FAR above that!

rolls off at 40Hz ... seems like a woofer to me, not a subwoofer ... my tower speakers are -3dB at 23Hz ... not to say they are not worth adding to some bookshelf speaker setups .. just my opinion of what "sub" means

What speakers are you running? Speaking from experience: For them to roll off that low they must be huge, have low sensitivity or the manufacturer is full of it.

@yamaha do you see this? I was planning to buy the HS8s to pair with my HS5's...The sub specs says it start arround 22hz. I was sceptical because it's a tiny 8" sub, how on earth can it produce 22hz, but this review confirmed that it is just lies. Yamaha, it's time for you to upgrade the damn sub. The HS5's are perfect, why isn't there a perfect sub to match.
