www.hardknock.tv Hard Knock Tv's Nick Huff Barili sat down with Hopsin at his home studio for an in-depth interview. This is part 2 of the conversation. As most of you know Funk Volume is no longer. Hop sat down with Nick for over an hour to explain how things got to this point and why he has walked away from his own label Funk Volume and his distribution deal with WBR. Hopsin breaks down why he is no longer talking to his former Funk Volume partner Dame and how things are with the rest of the crew including Dizzy Wright and Jarren Benton. Hop also shares his vision for his new label and clothing company Undercover Prodigy. Subscribe to Hard Knock TV to get notification for part 3.

While I wish Hopsin continued success with his new music and clothing label Undercover Prodigy, let this story be a lesson to everyone. You can't be a business owner and rely heavily on trusting partners, workers etc. to "do the right thing" because of longstanding friendships that are "like family". That's just crazy. You need to be able to differentiate between a strictly business and friendship relationship mindset. Hopsin relied too heavily on friendship and forgot to have a business mindset, to protect himself, while at Funk Volume. I am shocked he doesn't have sole trademark rights / ownership to the company name or ownership of the masters for his albums. As a business owner, you need to know about every aspect of the business--especially the financials. And it's important to get everything itemized, have strong contracts for any agreements / transactions, and to have individual, unbiased representation for everyone involved in any deal etc. At least Hopsin learned his lesson. He's now a stronger business man because of it. Hopsin should consider taking business or music business classes to make sure he has knowledge on how to properly run a business. This would free him from just being dependent on "the word" from others. It's sad to see that Funk Volume broke up. However, I'm glad to see that Hopsin woke up.
@RakugaX
@RakugaX 8 жыл бұрын
+UrbanLateNights You broke it all down perfectly. He had to go the through the hell fire in order to wake up. You have greedy corrupt people everywhere, that's why its imperative that he get his business knowledge leveled up. Just in case it happens again next time he'll have his ducks in row.

@@lyrics2challenged I know I am. And your point is self defeating. Only liking and buying 3 artists music (who all have the same exact style - sus) would be that acquired taste. He's progressed so much musically. Love the way he evolved and I respect that he said in one of his interviews that he listened to a critique saying "maaan all of hopsin's rap is the same" cause now he's more diverse with his music now. I appreciate the honesty in this vid as well

This was awesome. Great move by Hopsin to do this interview. Thank you Hardknock for pulling it off. I'm really excited to see what direction he takes from here on out. And Hopsin, if you happen to read this, PLEASE TAKE DIZZY WITH YOU. Y'all would be lethal as a duo. Anyway, thanks for the update.

Guys like Suge Knight use to "deal" with these kind of problems that Artists were having. But, then he would own your soul! Hopsin is way too independently successful to be delegating to culture vultures. NEVER allow another person to take full ownership of your life's work (always read the small print)........

Someone mind telling me how this manager/artist relationship works? I don't know much about this kind of stuff to do with managers and labels. If I understand this right though, it's ordinary/acceptable for an artist to ask for a different manager while staying under the same label right? In this case Dame just wanted to leech off of his percentages?

Managers job keep track of assets find you GOOD accountants that won't throw your money away book venues for performances keep track of merch sales, and this is the big one that probably matters most is PROMOTE THE ARTIST IN NEW WAYS, this is the reason hoisin probably wanted his money back and personally i feel this is something a lot of managers in the industry struggle with hence why hoisin probably trying the be civil with his manager when talking about it, but giving someone that much money and to have your fanbase not grow is truly a HUGE loss on his part let me give you an example, if this maybe dosent make sense, LOGIC / G-Eazy both been in the game a little less longer than hopsin but between 2012-2016 both artists have seen about a 20% growth in fanbase the difference is PROPER MANAGEMENT, so hopsin naturally thinks to himself smart guy "these guys havent even been in the game as long as me yet there on major network television already getting booked at festival(this is where the real moneys at fuck a rap venue lol its the truth) getting decent radio play and G-Eazy on his first arena tour this year SOLO so, now tell me why it makes sense for hopsin to pay you all this money when these are the outcomes he could more than likely have if he just got different management, n let me tell you why dame is dum as all hell he could have just let hoisin hire the new management who probably would have made the company more money, and dame co-founder(whatever) of the company who I'm sure has assets in the company would have gotten paid double probably what he making now INVESTING is key (how i know this stuff music industry experience been in rooms with these label guys from a young age) hope this helped and yes if your not getting the results and this is how you feed your family its perfectly regular for someone to get new management under a label unless you sign a contract stating you'll pay your manager for how ever many years contracts for

man I listen to mostly "main stream" hip hop like my favorite rapper is Lil Wayne, I listen to him every single day if I have to name another 3 it would be Eminem, 50 cent ( in his early career) and the third (4th including Tunechi) would probably be Nicki. but man I have to say after war hing these videos and hearing how hard you work and your dedication and passion and talent for your craft, it is extremely impressive. and you work harder than 99% of mainstream filthy rich rappers. I know alot of people hate on Wayne but one thing shit him that your guys have in common is like you he lives in the studio he's always working. say what you want about him but he is ( and evidently you) the hardest working artist in the game.But it just blows my fucking mind that Dre has never seen this and snatched you up, or anyone else for that matter, it's just beyond me. I'm glad to see you are smart with your money cuz most of these rappers would have burned right through that 8 million along time ago on jewelry and cars and making it rain in the club, fucking unreal man. your a def one of the best in the game and one of best writers, which is what got my attention in the first place.
