I don't understand, "is it worth it?". Regardless of performance uplifts, the updates are coming for you eventually. A 10% gain in performance is nothing to sneeze at, and is actually crazy that it's even "possible". AMD has been gimped, and now their processors are even better - sweet. You will have to update to the newest windows eventually, like it or not. So let's take the win.

24H2 kills WMR support, and some people may have just dropped $800 bucks on an HP Reverb G2...

@@DollyRanch how many people really got on the WMR train though? That said, Microsoft has given us a roughly a year to prepare for WMR deprecation, 24H2 shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that would care. I do admit that unlike major service packs from win7 and prior days, I don't see how it's really feasible to avoid 24H2 forever in order to keep WMR from dying, modern Windows update just isnt built to be able to sidestep major updates for long.

@@DollyRanch Apparently deprecation has been known since December last year. Last headset dropped for this was in 2020. 4 years isn't a long time for sure, and that sucks, but there's a reason it's being deprecated. If you choose not to update apparently it will work through 2026. I guess in this use case, upgrading might not be the best for you.

Like many here i dont interstand "is it worth it" either. Its free? What is there to compare value to? 10% would have been an okay generational uplift for a CPU - and now we're getting it for free! And even if HW canucks seem to hate copilot for some reason, there's no reason not to upgrade windows. Eventually everyone will have to anyway, due to security updates. The negative attitude to updating windows was not well explained and seemed pretty unfounded.

I don't understand why people are still recommending using Windows in 2024. The advice for every Windows issue should be the same: Wipe your drive and install Linux... Or buy a Macbook instead of a PC if you don't plan to ever play games.
@techd9154
@techd9154 Күн бұрын
Not upgrading to 24H2 is such a bad take! It's fine to wait a little while for bugs to be resolved but any amount of tangible performance improvement is worth the upgrade, considering you'll eventually have to upgrade when 23H2 is EOL. Most people do not have to worry about Copilot+ features, and if you don't want Recall which at least for now is OPT IN you can still uninstall it or disable it. You also should have tested 23H2 with September patches that has the updated schedular rather than continuing to use the preview patches.
@HardwareCanucks
@HardwareCanucks Күн бұрын
That was the point, maybe I didn't enunciate it well enough. There's no reason to jump to it now before we know what the overall impact is....the performance is random so therefore there's a good possibility that the games you play wouldn't see any impact whatsoever and meanwhile you'll have downloaded an update that really wasn't necessary.
@techd9154
@techd9154 Күн бұрын
@@HardwareCanucks While true, its generally safer to wait a few weeks after a major release i.e. 24H2, that point was not clear. It would have been better to show that 24H2 is not needed to get the performance improvements if you install 23H2 September patches for the few games that see an improvement. 24H2 has a lot of improvements to Settings and continued deprecation of Control Panel, depending on who you ask that a good or bad thing. While not necessary for Gamers 24H2 does have some quality-of-life improvements, ignoring Copilot/Recall.

Thanks for adding context. However, we haven't encountered any performance degradation in everyday usage...the conclusion is therefore open-ended. Take a wait and see approach rather than jumping onto 24H2 with the assumption the games you play will see any performance increases.

Unfortunately I don't have two completely identical builds to test, but it's pretty obvious that Windows 10 has always been faster on a lot of games than Windows 11 is. Microsoft needs to understand something: NOT EVERYONE CARES ABOUT AI. Not only that Microsoft basically forced AMD/Intel to make AI chips, which are more expensive and overpriced because of that AI. Microsoft, AMD and Intel needs to rethink this strategy. We need Windows 11 AI Edition and Windows 11 Classic Edition (0 AI). We need Lunar Lake & Strix Point chips with NPU (AI) and the same chips and performence without NPU at a decent price. Again I'm saying not everyone cares about AI, and I don't want to be forced to use it or pay more for something that I don't want.

This isn't a software vs hardware thing. Immediately jumping onto a huge new update like this is a big risk since fundamentally changes a lot of elements within the Windows 11 OS and adds new features. Its a risk / reward thing and when it comes to performance, since the uplifts and overall benefits seem to be quite random, the best bet for a lot of people will be to hold off unless there's proof that the games they play are directly impacted.
